if you mean corgan, yeah I agree. I heard he even re-recorded some of the other band members parts to make it more in the direction of cash making.

No. |
This will be doubly hard due to the fact that Bo Diddley's dead. :(

y'know, i don't think there are any real 'rock stars' left, like there were in the old days, because real rock has been put on the back burner for quite some time now. rock in the 70s had a massive market because it was relatively new, or at least in the style it was being presented at the time. things are just different now.
|
fuck the standard definition of rock gods, these are my current rock gods:
keiji haino, tom smith, rat bastard, weasel walter, yamatsuka eye, mick barr, kk null, jim o'rourke, kim/thurston/lee, buzz osborne, phil anselmo (althogh he prolly could actually fit into the standard def), kerry king, stephen o'malley, greg anderson, oren ambarchi, the mighty merz, misty martinez, nandor nevai, tatsuya yoshida, and so many more. these people might not be the embodiment of rock n roll, but they are all great musicians who believe in the sprituality of performance and rocking the audience's head off. or something. |
My new rock god is Glice. There, I said it.
|
Buckethead. There, I said it.

I cant believe no here has mentioned J Mascis. He really resurrected the guitar solo in the late 80s/early 90s.His solos are pure transcendental passion, I could get lost for days in them.

Repped. Mascis is the one of the few around today that is a rock/guitar god in the "classic" sense. |
i would put carrie brownstein in a guitar goddess category.

Hardly anyone has an ounce of fucking charisma anymore...
I mean have you seen fucking vampire weekend? Shit.. I know they are a particularyly awful example but it seems like having no cahrisma and exactly no danger factor is a trend in modern rock. I mean shit... modern indie rock isn't gonna scare anyone's parents. And none of the metal people have any rockstar qauality.. |
Safe is the new dangerous.

modern indie rock scares me cause it's so awful. |

they're not trying to be, though. it's harmless, entertaining pop and vampire weekend from what i know are sweethearts and put on a hell of a fun live show. |

(curses, no umlaut!) I do suspect that one of the legacies of the nineties really is that the generic notion of a rock god is somewhat redundant unless indulged in with a hefty dose of irony (ie the darkness/dragonforce/kid rock). I'd say Beth Ditto is doing a pretty decent job of contemporising rock godliness these days but, y'know, a lot's riding on how that next album comes off. |
svenonious is rad. soft focus is such a cool show.

I've met Buckethead and seen him without the mask and talked about monster movies with the guy. I can't think of him as a rock god. He is pretty awesome, though. |

He's not an 00's guy. I'm looking for someone modern. That's why Corgan and Cobain are out too. they're not modern. |

I can definitely see a time soon when the saturation of bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, etc, creates a massive critical backlash that will pave the way for a new Guns n Roses type outfit to once again clean up - which will, in itself, lead to yet another Radiohead-of-sorts, and so on. The depressing predictability of Rock is how it never seems able (at least in terms of its more commercial A-List) to break out of this cycle. There's always another Slash waiting in the wings, just as there's always another Jonny Greenwood. |
