fennesz is awesome, thanks atsonicpark for writing about it like its odd nosdam, even if fennesz almost doesnt sound like him

Not only would board members start adding quality albums to their collection, these "list" would drastically improve as well......

hahaha! would that not be awesome?

here is the llink to the -FUPPETS- post.

thats a really nice idea

radarmaker 08.14.2008 03:10 PM

You've got the pics for Kid A & NYCG&F the wrong way round, Rob. And 15-18 were all tied.

I'll fix it!

demonrail666 08.14.2008 04:02 PM

Well done SYR, thanks for that.
I was glad that the Silver Jews made the list. I'm really surprised that Sonic Nurse made it so high on both lists. I'm gonna listen to it again now. It's one of maybe two SY albums I don't care much for at all.

I have to be honest and say that, of the 35 albums, I've only heard maybe ten. Definitely makes me intrigued to want to hear the rest though.

A great idea SYR, thanks.

You must spread some more top fives around before giving it to SYRFox again.

MellySingsDoom 08.14.2008 04:10 PM

SYRFox - I'd to concur with demonrail's thanks for doing this poll - most interesting. I'm glad to see Converge's "Jane Doe" and Boards Of Canada's "Geogaddi" making it into the top 20. There's a couple of things in this chart that I'm definitely going to investigate further.

Rob Instigator 08.14.2008 04:11 PM

I am gonna have to go out and buy 4-5 things this payday

but I am staying far far away from goddamned wilco!

diskaholic-anonymous 08.14.2008 04:12 PM

for me NYC Ghosts and Flowers sounds better than Sonic Nurse, but for a sonic youth forum it's missing some important bands like Merzbow, Magik Markers, Guitar Wolf, Glenn Branca, anyway this top twenty sound good.

drrrtyboots 08.14.2008 04:12 PM

I'm so hurt to see Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You is absent.

demonrail666 08.14.2008 04:14 PM

Disappointed at the total lack of Trivium love on this board. I has ta say.

EDIT: That's not actually true. I'm not disappointed at all, on account of Trivium being well shit, basically.

MellySingsDoom 08.14.2008 04:16 PM

Trivium make my lungs ache....I'm definitely scoping the Double Leopards album, and might even be tempted to splash out on one of the SY ones....

Rob Instigator 08.14.2008 04:22 PM

leaves turn inside you is on the list

Yes! Halve Maen is a masterpiece. It was actually my #1

HaydenAsche 08.14.2008 05:06 PM

Half of mine were on there. Much better list than the over-all one. Sad there wasn't any Knife Play, though.

Strokes > Xiu Xiu????

Since when?

Excuse me, I think I meant to say not in the Top 5. Then again, Unwound is still relatively unknown to a lot of people.

Rob Instigator 08.14.2008 05:14 PM

unwound rule all!!!!! yeah!!!!!!

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:18 PM

I listened to LTIY a few hours ago, and there is only one issue, its too long.
otherwise its great

maybe people who watch total request live, but doubtful that people on underground rock message boards havnt at the very least heard the name

Dead-Air 08.14.2008 05:27 PM

The Strokes are obviously the closet band of a lot of people who post here.

My guess is that they were probably a bit like Pearl Jam for a next generation who heard them on mainstream radio and MTV and then got into the better music that they emulate and therefore maintain a soft spot for what they came by first.

I never had that middle ground, because when I was in high school it didn't exist (aside from maybe the Police and U2 of course) it was straight from mainstream radio to Confusion is Sex for me!

radarmaker 08.14.2008 05:31 PM

Good to see Lift To Experience make the list, even though it's the only one of mine that did. Did they get many votes aside from mine & Torn Curtain's?

And I'll nth all the props to SYRFox - as a few others have stated, it's a handy catch-up guide given that I've only heard about half of them. Still don't understand why so many people rate Nurse over Murray Street though...

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:33 PM

for me it was nirvana about 10 years ago.
after them straight into SY about 8 years ago, and since 5 years I am diggin leftfield electronica too. somehow thanks to sonic youth

jimbrim 08.14.2008 05:34 PM

Nice so see Fennesz high in the list!

You are certainly not alone in that routing. This sound like a great question for a poll!

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:45 PM

but what bands to add to the poll beneath nirvana?

HECKLER SPRAY 08.14.2008 05:54 PM

Good list, Mr fox.

No Shellac ?
I'm surprised, their last one had got good critics on the board when it came out.

Toilet & Bowels 08.14.2008 06:36 PM

i'm shocked that sonic nurse beat murray st & nycg&f.

only one of choices made it to the top 35.

1) Fushitsusha - I Saw It! That Which Before I Could Only Sense
2) Quasimoto - The Unseen
3) Charalambides - IN CR EA SE
Joint 4) King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader & Keiji Haino - Next Let Us Try Changing The Shape
Joint 5) Merzbow - Yoshinotsune & Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
6) Charalambides - Live/Dead
7) Pink Reason - Cleaning The Mirror
8) Striborg - Trepidation
9) Teenage Panzerkops - Harmful Emotions
10) Eddie Marcon - Shining On Graveposts

If Terraform (NEEDS MORE LOVE!) or At Action Park had come out this decade I would have put on, but 1000 Hurtz just doesn't do it for e in the same way and I haven't got Grayhound yet. 6 of my picks made it, and my entire top 5, so I guess that means my taste is even more in line with the majority of this board than I thought. Great to see Fennesz so high. Makes me feel better about not voting for it (it would be top 15 for me, but not top 10). And yeah, mega plus points for the Boris placing. Oh and totally thumbs up to everyone for putting A Ghost Is Born on instead of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (not to say I have anything against YHF, it's just that AGIB is so brilliant. My number 2).

atsonicpark 08.14.2008 10:14 PM

Yeah, Terraform rules!

Personally, I think shellac gets worse with every record... but they're still great.

Rob Instigator 08.14.2008 10:16 PM

greyhound is great man...

atsonicpark 08.14.2008 10:21 PM

Yeah I know.

samuel 08.14.2008 11:39 PM

good #1!
and #25 was nice to see

Death & the Maiden 08.15.2008 12:55 AM

Three of mine made it into the top twenty (Nurse, Murray St and Is This It?). I knew my other two wouldn't make it (The Verlaines - Pot Boiler and Ed Kuepper - Jean Lee & the Yellow Dog). I don't understand why people think it's awful that The Stokes were on the list.
