I agree they've got some all out obnoxious cock-rock anthems, and that tends to be their most popular, but some of their mellow stuff is just straight great songwriting. If legitimately you're turned off by the testosterone driven stuff, check out these fem-tastic ones .... seriously :) • Going to California • Tangerine • That's the way • The Rain Song As far I can recall too, they might have been the first band to really coin the signature song-writing style where they start mellow and pretty and then unload to a heavy part. How many rock bands do this today, all of them? samples of theirs are: Stairway to Heaven Over The Hills and Far Away Ramble On, among others...... are we becoming such music snobs that we ignorantly shun the pioneers of music of their generations? What's next, Beatles overrated? Nirvana sucks? |
agreed.the radio is tryin to kellem.
|
tangerine is such a gorgeous song.
|
of course i love them, they are awesome-- what's not to like? their "classic rock" fans? sure-- but don't be a twatty scenester & listen to good music by yourself. great fucking blues-based rock, best of the 70s, savage drums, great guitar, great bass, plant was a bit much at times but i can't quit you babe is such a fucking great song and haters can shrivel up like dead cocks.

Thanks for the tips - I will go back to them, but I do own the first four albums and every now and then try again to get them, and fail. I think the thing with pioneers is that there's fucking loads of them. Personally, I don't like Zep and I can't stand the Beatles, but you pick the pioneers that suit you. I don't expect everyone to agree that, say, Hank Williams is one of the most seminal artists of the 20th Century, but he's a pioneer that I like. Very few people on this message board listen to Tallis, Downland, JS Bach and the like (and I'd go further and say that many have no idea who Dowland or Tallis are) but their musical pioneer status is irrefutable. Unless anyone wants to refute it, in which case, cool, have fun, help yourself to a prize from the prize trolley. |
I do like them when they're on, but not enough to listen to on purpose.
And I wouldn't care much to bother seeing one of their reunions. |
Not as much as Uriah Heep.
|
Not really. A lot of their music is OK, some of it I really enjoy, but I could do without the vocals. I'm not often keen on vocals, and especially high-pitched rocky type vocals.

The Beatles are overrated.
Nirvana sucks. |
I used to, during my classic rock faze.
Now I can't stand them, although they're better than ACDC and all that other crap. |
Never cared much for them. They never managed to make me interested so, nope.

I'll grant that. I fucking HATE AC/DC. |
Jimmy Page's soundtrack for Lucifer Rising is pretty amazing.
|
Senor Genteel - Jimmy Page didn't end up doing the souundtrack to Lucifer Rising, due to falling out with Anger. It was actually composed and performed by Manson Family geezer Bobby Beausoleil - and very good it is too.

Good post. (Although, some will say that about Beatles and Nirvana.) I voted no, but I do accept that Zep has done some great stuff. I love Kashmir (precisely because it is so ott hahaha?) and a lot of the Houses Of The Holy lp. But there's a lot of wankery / posing in this band. They must have inspired Spinal Tap? I think that 1976 lp, (forget the name, Achilles Last Stand is on it) is fucking awful. A lot of the early stuff is so heavy handed, Led Zepellin indeed. At least the last lp was ballsy....in that they tried a new sound. The middle solo thing of All Of My Love is actually quite fucking great, and I've always been able to whistle it, note perfect, hahaha... |

I hate the band.

I like up through HOTH, their fifth album.
I don't like the prancing that Robert Plant did in his feminine frilly laced blouses as he became the Golden God! Oh Brother!!! I kinda think he's embarrassed by that posture he projected now that he's in his golden years....He's much more humble and restrained now. Jimmy Page is basically retired and hasn't put any new music out in a decade, JPJ has joined with Dave Grohl and Josh Holmes and they have a new band, The Crooked Vultures. JPJ has had the most significant post-Zep music originality of the 3 surviving ex-Zepsters IMO. The "re-union" with John Bonham's son, Jason, actually has some great material on it. He did his father proud. Plant's voice was better than it's been for Zep material since 1972 !!! |
How can you not like Led Zeppelin? I imagine there are some that think they're too cool for the Zep.
|
i was just listening to them. nothing beats when jimmy whips out the violin bow. gimmick or not.

i could listen to page jack the guitar allll day. fuck the haters.
|
I just put on "I" right now. When "Your Time is Gonna Come" comes on, I'm going to turn it up to 11. Lennon started playing his toy piano along to "Good Times, Bad Times" and totally nailed it too.

Sure, and what's weird is I don't see Zep as a jam band/guitar masturbating band. Live they tried to jam more, but honestly weren't that good, mainly bc Jimmy was too wasted and/or improvising wasn't his forte. It was in the studio and arranging his parts that was brilliant to me...closer to the Gilmour/Floyd approach bc every note of his recorded parts were huge for the song. |

Oh yeah, the live double dvd thing that was released a few years back is excellent. |

how many more times is better than dazed and confused. and the sex pistols are irrelevant. |
they're very relevant to fashion. important to music as well, it's undeniable. but as far as nastiness goes they were certainly a manufactured nastiness at least to some extent.
|
this is true. people don't think about that for some reason.
the fashion part of it is great anyway. contrived or not. long live vivienne westwood. |
Lydon was a great writer who brought lyrics to rock 'n roll that weren't there before. Cool voice too. The band itself a bit overrated, but the impact can't be denied.
Today I'd rather listen to "Anarchy in the UK" than "Kashmir", but that's mostly due to personal circumstances (I was in a car that rolled over in high school while listening to "Kashmir" on my walkman). It doesn't surprise me that Page liked the Pistols as he could tell a good rock band when he saw one. |

Zep's cool. I fucking adore Your Time Is Gonna Come and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Probably one of the best band compositions we'll ever see. Every guy in that band pulls their weight.
|
my fav is satellite
i have no idea who actually wrote that? was it them? some demo shit. |

Hahahaha..... Jesus Christ people, some of us don't like Zep, OK? If I ever hear Stairway again, "the greatest song ever", I'm going to throw up. I'd rather chew tinfoil than hear the first LP.....blues that go up to fucking 11. Subtlety was not a strong point here. And no, I don't think I'm "too cool". |
some situations don't call for subtlety. like rock and roll.
+ you can't help what you like. |
Houses of the Holy hasn't left my stereo for a few weeks now. I can now play The Rain Song on guitar.
|

Sure, and, you cannot help what you don't like. I'm not sure where I'm going here, but folks, what lasting influence has Zep had on other musicians / music? I wish I could find what Pete Townshend said about Zep, hahaha....I found myself completely agreeing with him. |
