yup exactly! that's why i hate when people have post religious threads on here cause i know nobody is going to agree so what's the point? believe whatever you want, who cares what someone else thinks. I thought this thread would be fun cause i wanted to see what you guys thought about this topic. I didn't even know this was a question until today. |
My dad had a friend nicknamed "Beaner." They were from New York and had just moved out here, and were not very familiar with the term back then. So once they were in a Mexican restaurant, and he called out to him from across the room. I wish I had been there...
|
...because he's dead now.
|
OK smartypants, what do you call people from the United Arab Emirates?
China is offically called "The People's Republic of China," yet we still call them Chinese. I don't think "American" referring to a citizen of the United States Of America is really that much of a stretch. And no one was suggesting that America> South America and North America. It is a question of the names of countries and the names of Continents! This is so stupid.... |
ofcourse he was real, kevin costner would never partray anyone fictional.

Why don't we just do it the old fashioned way and say: "Where are you from?" instead of trying to create new batches of nouns for ourselves.

There I will grant you some logical superiority. I actually do that too, because it makes more sense to me. Metric system also=genius! |
I hate that date thing. I work with files all day, and have to go through dates and stuff and I'm never quite sure whether it's day/month or month/day. 99% of the time it's month/day, but then there will be the occasion where I see something like 25/6/03 and I get a bit worried about the whole system...

educators now get their ideas from episodes of The Simpsons, apparently.
It was not too long ago (when Everybody Loves Raymond was gearing up for its finale) that this one with guests Ray Romano & (a reprise) Stephen Hawking first aired. Homer: Real, not real, real, real. Dr. Hibbert: Oh sorry Homer but recent historical evidence indicates that Robin Hood didn't actually exist. roofer14.mp3 |
He made movies.

Yeah, we're pretty dead and Goblins are funny chaps.
Especially when you make them angry. :D |
I think its a great question, its an interesting way into history and the problem of veracity for the past. It also lets you explore issues around the foundation for stories and archetypes, as well as it being a cool story and an interesting period. Its also a good way to get students into presenting arguments rather than just furrowing facts.
There would have been Robin Hood characters whether or not they gave to the poor or were just respected because they represented an affront against the power structures (landowners, feudalparties etc) and so poor people who were pretty much stuck in the mire of their social positions could take hope from seeing others break free of the mundane reality. In a way its a lot like rockstars were in the seventies (not that I was around then but they dont seem to make em like that anymore), idols of a life beyond the strictures of society. Whether or not there was a specific Robin Hood is up in the air, I like to think so, cause he would have been cool. |
I saw a program about this a couple of years ago. I think there were about three different guys who all had similarities to the Robin Hood myth so it was like an amalgation of these three guys. I think one of them had the name as well but in those days apparently the name Robin Hood became a kind of nick name for criminals, it was used in records and stuff.

I didn't notice anyone respond to this. The generic answer is 'Emiritans', but there are more convoulted answers which I won't go into. |
Ask a Canadian, a Mexican, a Cuban, and a Brazillian who live in their respective countries if they are American. After kicking in your teeth (well, except for the Canadian) they will say no. "American", though I understand your confusion Sn@ke, generally refers only to people in the USA. It just evolved into that, and the aforementioned countrymen would not disagree. A mutual concensus you might say, regardless that the whole west has some form of "America" in its name.

Huh. I thought the indigenous Arabs of that area were called "Emaratis," but either way this makes perfect sense to me, and also serves as an example consistent with calling citizens of the USA "Americans." Thanks for that. Smartypants. |
Does robin hood mean "robbing hoodlum?"
|
Yeah! maybe
|
ahh i'm glad to see so many responses to my thread. by the way i wrote to my teacher and told that i think that robin hood was NOT a real person.

a pity they are plastic. |
The BBC started showing their new Robin Hood series on Saturday. If episode one is anything to go by, it's groundbreaking in its crapness.
