my old band recorded our album on minidisc. works a treat

minidisc recorder are pretty good for that. if you dont mind the (good) compression of the minidisc format. they are a bargain used at these days, and you can switch and label the minidiscs itself.
the reason why I still got my trusty MD player


no compression to reduce digital file size is good compression!

we use soundforge which is pretty good for direct recording and then you can edit it and fuck around with it afterwards. its fairly user friendly and simple to understand so i recommend that. i am sure there must be other programs that are just as good.

yeah of course. but atrac3 isnt the worst at all, I guess. what you get for the price is pretty ok (used)
