yeah all he did was bone up some $. Hahaha.

I plan to check it. Just sort of low on my list.

DeadDiscoDildo 08.13.2010 12:20 PM

Word, not gonna hype it up a shit ton. Wasn't revolutionary or anything. Just a nice take on the "classic" horror movie.

demonrail666 08.13.2010 12:31 PM

Can I be the token elitist wanker and say that the only del Toro film I was ever really impressed with was Cronos?

EDIT: Back on track for NOTD, eta now down to 5 hours, so it should be good to go by midnight.

noisereductions 08.13.2010 12:36 PM

Cronos was very good. I haven't seen much of his work. I always hear I should see Devil's Backbone. I liked Pan's. Didn't love.

atsonicpark 08.13.2010 12:38 PM

Ugh, I hate del Toro, didn't want to start some debate but I find all his work boring as hell.

noisereductions 08.13.2010 12:39 PM

I think Cronos, Pans & Hellboy are all I've seen. All three I'd say were "pretty good." But yeah. I don't rush out to see his shit.

atsonicpark 08.13.2010 12:41 PM

Even his name sucks. Sounds like some weird bull.

Sounds too close to Benicio Del Toro, who has never been good in anything.

knox 08.13.2010 12:41 PM

atsonicpark 08.13.2010 12:42 PM

yeah that movie's weird, just saw it a few months ago for the first time

noisereductions 08.13.2010 12:43 PM

whatever, I'm all about Troll 2 tonight.

noisereductions 08.13.2010 12:47 PM

^Quality.

atsonicpark 08.13.2010 12:58 PM

I was actually going to say BRaindead/Dead Alive but figured everyone's seen that a million times by now. I showed it, uncut, in one of my high school classes at the end of the year when we had a substitute teacher. Probably my finest school memory.

I do like Devil's Backbone. I like Mimic too, it's just that besides Cronos (which I really do love) I've never thought they were that great.

Count Mecha 08.13.2010 01:01 PM

If you'll allow, I'll recommend two.

First there's Faust, a silent picture from 1926 made by F.W. Murnau (of Nosferatu fame). Great haunting imagery, spooky atmosphere with with eerie undertones. And a ever changing devil that is downright creepy a fair amount of times.

Also there's Curse of the Demon (or Night of the Demon, depending) which is this Dana Andrews picture from 1957. The demon is surprisingly well detailed in this picture and is rather ominous. Great sounds, great vibes.

It's not one I'll pick for tonight, but only because it's a film I watch so regularly. Absolutely love that movie. As you say, great vibes.

I'm ashamed to say that I've never actually seen Faust. I should get round to seeing it soon but I'm not really in the mood for it tonight.

Both great shouts, though.

oh he did Mimic? Yeah. That one's just pretty good too. I would agree, Cronos is the best of the ones I've seen.

he was fabulous in Usual suspects, in Fear & loathing, in Che', all sorts of good stuff

Rob Instigator 08.13.2010 01:47 PM

Faust is great, so is both original Nosferatu and Werner Herzog's remake of Nosferatu

(I stick with old classic horror movies, cuz the newer ones gross me out with the gore)

German Expressionism is "horror" now?

(OK, so I guess it is "horror," but I still see it more as an art film)

GeneticKiss 08.14.2010 03:09 AM

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is considered by many to be the first horror film ever made. I haven't seen it so I can't really say if it's "scary" or not, but it was certainly more twisted than anything else of the time.

Saw Night of the Demons talked about earlier. Pretty dumb for the most part (although I doubt it was meant to be taken 100% seriously), although the scene with the goth chick dancing to Bauhaus was pretty good, and the Asian chick had nice boobs...

I've found that I usually don't enjoy horror movies...they either seem stupid or freak me out completely...

Enjoyed:
-Alien
-Aliens
-Alien 3
-Alien Resurrection
-A Nightmare on Elm Street (original)
-A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
-Friday the 13th (original)
-Friday the 13th Part 2
-Halloween (original)
-Freddy vs. Jason
-The Wicker Man
-The Shining
-Lifeforce
-Planet Terror
-Videodrome
-From Dusk Til Dawn
-Sleepy Hollow
-The Wolf Man (remake)

Thought were dumb:
-Night of the Demons
-Killer Klowns from Outer Space
-Breeders (good nudity, though)
-Necropolis
-Drag Me To Hell
-Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
-Bram Stoker's Dracula
-H.P. Lovecraft's The Unnameable

Got freaked out by:
-The Sixth Sense (hey, I was young)
-The Ring
-The Devil's Chair
-Cube (not really horror, but certainly gorier and more disturbing than anything I had seen at the time)

EDIT: Hmm, looking back at this list, maybe the good have outweighed the bad in the end...

alteredcourse 08.14.2010 03:18 AM

Cube is so awesome! Get all Cube movies!

FreshChops 08.14.2010 03:26 AM

Killer Clowns from Outerspace!

I've heard that said as well, and I never really understood why they said that. I mean, a full decade before there was Frankenstein in 1910. But I think maybe they don't mention that one because it's more of a short film. It's only like 8 or 12 minutes long, something like that. There's also L'inferno which is Dante's Inferno. But maybe they consider that more of a fantasy film.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is fine, I haven't seen it in a looooong time. The look of that movie is easily the most interesting thing about it, the paper sets, painted shadows, strange.

The horror genre is the one I think that is the most difficult to enjoy. There are some really great horror pictures out there and I enjoy a solid number of them, but it's the one genre out of all of them that's really run down and over saturated with really awful direct to video brain dead movies. And there are so many of them it makes it easy to hate exploring the genre.

Yeah, Cube rules. Well the first one anyway, don't really think much of the other two.

There's a really cool short film that the director of Cube made called Elevated. It also stars the guy who played Worth in Cube, his name is David something. Has a bit of the same vibe as Cube.

So demonrail, what'd you watch?

I watched Takeshi Kitano's Getting Any?, not exactly Friday the 13th material.

I would take Getting Any? over any horror movie any day.

Night of the Demons.

Wasn't that impressed, really. It seemed to take close to an hour before anything really happened, and when it did, I didn't really care anymore. Glad I saw it but not one I'd bother watching again.

noisereductions 08.14.2010 09:41 AM

awe.

demonrail666 08.14.2010 09:46 AM

haha. sorry. i didn't hate it or anything, just wasn't particularly bowled over by it. I'm interested to know why you rate it so highly, actually.

noisereductions 08.14.2010 10:09 AM

just a feeling I get. I guess. I don't know. Most movies that "I Fucking LoOOVE!!!" I really can't give a specific reason. I just like everything about that movie. I like the score, the look, the stereotypical characters, the Linnea, the music, the makeup, everything really.

I think we all process sound + vision differently. Sometimes it's not a matter of "this song is great because of the melody and timbre of the instruments" it's just it "hits you" a certain way. Yr brain and heart like it for some ineffable reason. Same with films. Why do I REALLY love Death Proof? Honestly, I don't know. I can list things I like ABOUT it. But it just hits me the right way. ANd I love it. Same thing.

demonrail666 08.14.2010 10:25 AM

No, you're right. It's obviously impossible to know what exactly makes a person really like a film. I just couldn't find anything to latch onto that might've elevated it above the ordinary. Still, like I said, I'm glad that I saw it.

atsonicpark 08.14.2010 01:19 PM

Exactly my thoughts.. night of the demons takes FOREVER to do ANYTHING. It is so boring.. wow.

And yeah, Getting any? rules, one of the best movies ever!
