Scorpio Rising

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:38 AM

The Boo Radleys were a shoegazing band? That's news to me.

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:40 AM

And what about Sweet Jesus? They were a good band for the three minutes that they existed.

gmku 07.14.2006 11:40 AM

How about Th' Faith Healers?

I know they're not really shoegazer like MBV or Ride. But damn, I was listening to their Peel Sessions the other night, and wow, there are moments where they can be downright hypnotic. They're like the Pixies on ecstacy or something.

It's cool, it's cool, it's cool
in a hippy hole.
Filled with smoke,
Look at the flowers,
Try some of this,
Shit for hours...

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:41 AM

Swervedriver's Mezcal Head is a masterpiece.I play that album a lot.

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:42 AM

Sultans of swing anyone?
Carter Unstoppable Sex Machine with your fries?

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:43 AM

Would you sir like Drop Nineteen with your main course?

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:43 AM

Did i hear Adorable there?

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:51 AM

No?Seefeel?

porkmarras 07.14.2006 11:54 AM

Could you pass me some Chapterhouse please?

Sonic Youth 37 07.14.2006 12:11 PM

Spacemen 3 and Loop and Seefeel I consider Dream Pop, so that's why they're not up there. I just forgot to put the Twins up there. The Mary Chain is in essence Noise Pop but they are pretty much the jumping off point of shoegaze.

porkmarras 07.14.2006 12:15 PM

Lali Puna then.

Sonic Youth 37 07.14.2006 12:15 PM

How about lovesliescrushing?

porkmarras 07.14.2006 12:19 PM

Who are they?

Sonic Youth 37 07.14.2006 12:20 PM

Mid-90s shoegaze from Arizona. Like MBV but more electronic sounding. Just two people.

porkmarras 07.14.2006 12:24 PM

I'll check them out if you'd care to kindly up them.Seefeel were one of the bands that were mentioned in the (in)famous article by Simon Reynolds that coined the term post-rock.Main were another one. It's bizarre how that term went on to describe a totally different genre of music.

Sonic Youth 37 07.14.2006 12:35 PM

I would kindly upload them but I have been having trouble tracking down the album.

Savage Clone 07.14.2006 12:41 PM

I know one of those loveliescrushing people. Top guy! Great project too.
The Lilys had an album called "In The Presence Of Nothing" back then that was a pretty fantastic MBV-styled record. They didn't stick with that sound for long, but that album is a keeper!

They're three people!

Well, my shoegaze top 3:

1) My Bloody Valentine
2) Slowdive
3) Chapterhouse

Anyone mentioned Moose? Their "yxz" is, more-or-less, lovely and sweet and gazy...

-voted Ride

TheDom 07.14.2006 05:19 PM

What Ride album should I get first?

Things is,that album i listened to a lot when i went to bed last year. You get repped big time for this.

foldback 07.14.2006 09:23 PM

Alright, another vote for Ride!

As for first album, Nowhere is a good place to go to begin. Lots of swirly guitar and distant vocals...very good stuff.

My personal favorite is Going Blank Again, but Smile, the album that combines their first two EPs, is excellent too. Actually, this kept me company on my hour drive to work this morning.

Fun fact: The CD of Smile is mastered from the vinyl of the original EPs, while the EPs, if bought separately, are just mastered normally. Interesting.

Heroic Dose 07.15.2006 12:36 AM

I can't believe there are only 2 votes for Slowdive who really is the most shoegaze out of all those bands and one of the finest ever!! Nothing against the others :)

I would also add bands like Low, La Bradford (more of an evolved shoegaze which shoegaze was defined by a time period much like grunge), Bedhead etc. Even terms like Spacerock kinda bleed across that category but maybe they rocked a bit more, dunno, even though I wouldn't even put MBV quite as spacerock....... Musical categories fit much better back in the day and nowadays I can't classify anything :)

kingcoffee 07.15.2006 01:04 AM

I had to vote for My Bloody Valentine. Simply because Galaxy 500 wasn't on the list!!!!!!

Jim Reid is one of the coolest people ever. But they do seem to be staring at their shoes quite a bit.

Style 07.15.2006 04:04 AM

Lush weren't strictly shoegazing but somehow manage to fit in that category.I should go back and listen to them as i quite liked them at one point.Chapterhouse were drivel and the singer in Scorpio Rising went on to form Plastic Fantastic and kickstarted the short lived 'Romo' movement.I dare anyone on here to remember the band Orlando, darlings of the Romo movement.Rubbish of the prime order they were.

The Jesus and Mary Chain were a better band, but I think that My Bloody Valentine could hold their own against them. Give them a good run for their money.
