well, seeing James Blackshaw live must be astonishing
wish I was Londoner |
[b][no.signal] presents an intense night of inventive drumming, rifs of guitars and combined drones.
![]() DETAILS: Audio player, bios and links http://www.no-signal.net/kane/ Sunday 22nd October 2006 THE SPITZ 109 COMMERCIAL ST. OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET. E1 6BG Entry: £8 in advance Tickets: here "Paradise between the back porch, the urban jungle and the heavens above ... Rarely does the avant-garde rock this hard." Time Out New York "February is a drone-inspired record in a big way; massive walls of chugging Chatham/Branca-leaning dissonant single guitar chords lead the way through long, and at times bluesy workouts. ..." WFMU "ROCKS! Great Southern-fried looped blues rock. Like Steve Reich if all he listened to was Muddy Waters and Zeppelin." Dusted [/url] |

Grandmaster Flash Live at the Jazz Cafe Monday 20th November doors 7pm £20 advance The ultimate Hip Hop DJ of all times. During hip-hop nearly 30-year history, few names have become as well known to music lovers across the globe as that of Grandmaster Flash. Not only is he responsible for inventing the musical genre called Hip Hop but his pioneering use of the turntables make him the first DJ to play the turntables as a musical instrument thus helping to elevate the status of the DJ to a masterful, artistic position. He is also responsible for assembling one of the earliest and greatest rap groups of all time - The Furious Five - these are some of the hallmarks of a career which has extended from the Bronx in the early 1970s to all corners of the globe into the 21st century. Hip-Hop Culture was created in 1971 by three DJs, Flash being one of them, and then, contrary to popular belief, came the graffiti writers and the breakdancers, and the MCs followed much later. Flash recorded the unique sounds he created, and in 1977 began experimenting and collaborating with local MC’s and put together his own group who became known as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Their reputation grew around Flash’s unrivaled DJ skills and the groups blending and trading of lyrics. Flash also gained notice for the visually dynamic and acrobatic way he could spin and scratch records using his feet, toes and elbows. 1981’s The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel was the first record to feature complex cuts and scratches, and introduced the name Grandmaster Flash as their originator. Following the group’s demise, Flash continued to make his mark by releasing solo albums, and was immortalized in Blondie’s hit song of 1980, Rapture "Flash is fast, Flash is cool!" On September 22, 2005, VH1 honored Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five for their contributions of adding social consciousness to hip hop. Flash was also honored for his contribution to DJ culture in hip hop. This event too was broadcasted and televised around the world. And to top it all, DJ Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making them the first DJ and rap group to ever be nominated. LMC's 15th Annual Festival of Experimental Music
"International in its sweep, uncompromising in its substance" - Time Out Friday 15 December: Otomo Yoshihide’s Anode + Roel Meelkop + Tom Chant & Sharif Sehnaoui Saturday 16 December: Bernard Parmegiani + Tim Barnes & Ishikawa Ko + Andrea Neumann + Texturizer Sunday 17 December: Ben Patterson & Keith Rowe + Olivia Block + Tomas Korber + Chris Corsano & John Edwards Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH. Doors open 7pm www.l-m-c.org.uk www.ica.org.uk London Musicians' Collective 15th Annual Festival brings together two dozen of the leading figures from the world of new music over three nights of sustained avant-garde intensity.Book early - seats are limited. This year the Festival boasts some extraordinary coups: Otomo Yoshihide’s ensemble project, Anode, is the biggest he has presented in London since the epochal Japanorama tour of 2001. He’s joined by an all-star line-up including Sachiko M., Ichiraku Yoshimitsu, Masahiro Uemura, Tim Barnes, Mark Sanders, Andrea Neumann, Angharad Davies, Stefano Tedescu and Rhodri Davies. Presented in two versions, quiet and (very) loud, Anode shares the first night with opaque Dutch laptop composer Roel Meelkop and the lyrical duo of English saxophonist Tom Chant and Lebanese guitarist Sharif Sehnaoui. The second night sees France’s foremost living composer Bernard Parmegiani present two multi-channel, multi-speaker works, including the UK premiere of “Au gré du souffle le son s'envole”; the debut of a duo comprising brilliant American percussionist Tim Barnes (“Perfect Partner”) and the distinguished Japanese sho-player Ishikawa Ko, along with German experimentalist and instrument inventor Andrea Neumann and state-of-the-art improv from the Greek duo Texturizer. The final night pulls out all the stops still further, kicking off with a free jazz freakout by Chris Corsano (drums) and John Edwards (double bass); a mind-boggling solo by Swiss electronics player Tomas Korber; the UK debut of the extraordinary Chicago-based sound artist Olivia Block; and the meeting of two titans of new music - Ben Patterson, the only African-American member of 1960s’ radical art movement Fluxus (which also included Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik and Lamonte Young), joined here by the globally influential English guitarist Keith Rowe, acknowledged as an influence on everyone from Pete Townshend and Syd Barrett to the present generation of young improvisers and noise artists. |
