One of the best records I've heard this year so far.
At times it sounds like Chrome if they were fronted by Andrew Eldtritch, formed a garage punk band and they were produced by TV Ghost.

It also sounds fantastic if you play it at 33 rpm.

The new Tindersticks record is really nice.

This is probably my favourite track from it.

Lotus Plaza's new album is pretty rad. I really like the guitar arrangements on this record. I think it's better than Atlas Sound's last album. Another solid release from Kranky they've put out some really nice records this year. I have also really enjoyed the new grouper collaboration and Windy & Carl which have been put out on the label.

I think/hope I mentioned this too. Far better than Parallax, as you said. That album was a massive disappointment, especially after Logos.

Insect Factory - Melodies From a Dead Radio (Fabrica Records)

An intriguing title is a great start, and from the very first track, Melodies from a Dead Radio delivers on its promise. One would imagine said melodies to be static-filled, ghostly, out of focus, difficult to comprehend. The shortwave radio burst of “Globes” is a series of words that sounds like ignition, a spark struggling to break through. Warbles and drones surround the transmission, choking it into non-existence. Perhaps Jeff Barsky (Insect Factory) is trying to say something about the difficulty of saying something: the intentional message lost in the debris. On “Radio Forecast”, the album’s standout track, waves and drones meander, meet and strike up a conversation, establishing a semblance of form before the locusts descend. The last third of this track sounds like the artist’s nom-de-plume: an insect factory at the meat of its production schedule, shedding wings to meet a quota as antennae fall all around. This is where Barsky is at his finest: adding layer upon layer until all the levels are in the red. The beauty of the track is that both form and chaos grow at equal levels: tempo and rhythm linked to volume and mass. The second side of the LP – Fabrica’s first foray into the vinyl format – sounds more like the amplified production of ants than the hive communications of bees. The hinted-at melodies are more apparent, the interference less defined. In “New Incision”, notes blink on and off like fireflies, backed by gentler drones, eventually giving way to filtered tones and quieter beds. The album’s brief coda, a mirror to the opener, provides the set’s clearest example of tune, a vaguely Indian guitar melody tailed by distant bells, yet still fuzzy around the edges, still distant and detached like a song shot into space and forgotten. What’s in a name? In this case, the name is simply the abbreviation for the sound. (Richard Allen)

Though not yet released, this is obviously going to be one of the coolest archival releases of the year:

This is the band, Iīm going to listen much more in the near future (I have now only Monster Movie and I believe itīs not really their greatest album although itīs quite good. I have listen some material from youtube thatīs far more interesting).

pad_023 04.13.2012 11:50 AM

I have been enjoying the new Dan Sartain record this week. Clocks in under 20 minutes but is good nonetheless. There is some filler but the best tracks (Swap Meet, Indian Massacre) are damn catchy, Ramones inspired punk at its best.

Track from the LP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIFMjqLykac

I personally like everything up to Flow Motion, at which I percieve things to get a bit spotty. There are many bootlegs online from various years, not sure how much will overlap with this official set, sounds like it might be all new, but who knows? Dig deep!

I will :). I think I start from Tago Mago (there seem to be 40th Anniversary Edition in my local library.)

I frankly wasn't into it. My boyfriend was all over it last week, but I didn't hear anything that particularly caught my fancy. Not bad but not good and way too reliant on nostalgia.

dasx 04.16.2012 12:51 PM

Already released this year:
Pharaoh Overlord: Lunar Jetman
Gunn-Truscinski Duo: Ocean Parkway

Upcoming (hopefully) great stuff:
Can: The Lost Tapes
Scott Walker's new album
Om: Advaitic Songs
Sigur Rós: Valtári
Mission of Burma: Unsound

You should by Tago Mago, Future Days, Ege Bamyasi and Soundtracks. All of them are excellent albums. I found Can about ten years ago accidently when I was trying to find band formed by two guys who left Kraftwerk (which really was Neu, but at the moment I couldn't remember the correct name).

SonicBebs 04.17.2012 02:27 AM

Django Django is good too

Sun Araw's new collaboration with the congos is pretty rad. It's basically Sun Araw laying down these weird space dub beats and sounds with congos providing vocals. The sounds Sun Araw makes are really interesting, they vary so much. It's a cool record, it has really nice vibes to it. This is my personal favourite track from the record http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oox_24v3B0c

Just listening to the new Actress now. So far pretty impressed.

hirsute_biped 04.24.2012 02:14 AM

and this:

Jimmy Page's early 70's avant/prog unused soundtrack for legendary occult movie on one side and some related tracks on the flipside, 1st time officially released, available only thru his newish website, vinyl only. I've heard some bootleg extracts which are kinda cool and kinda spotty, still curious about this. Va Va Va Doom! (maybe more proto-goth actually).

Different from the Bobby Beausoleil soundtrack actually used on the film which was released as a deluxe multi-disc package w/ extras a while ago, which had it's moments.
