Really digging Canniable Ox and A Tribe Called Quest.
(I'm getting the album that Toilet and Bowels posted just because it seemed so thorough)

sonicl 04.18.2006 03:16 AM

I've just been introduced to Dalek's "Absence" and I love it. Intelligent lyrics, good rythmns, and layers of sheer noise.

_slavo_ 04.19.2006 01:58 AM

now lemme check what I got in my IPod right now...

Company Flow,
El-P,
Mr.Lif,
Cannibal Ox,
Dilated Peoples,
Roots,
MF Doom,
Ty,
Edan

and for noizeheads:
Dalek,
Techno Animal

real noisy apocalyptic hip-hop. I've seen Dalek live and it was a real blast. venue was about to crash down.

"Culture for Dollars"

Written word held weight
Now honor at best recessive trait
The sound and shape to come succumbed to Malignant maelstrom
Malformed mentals stained expected outcome
And not to be outdone
Some speak in half phrases
No definition to brush strokes already out of phase with these statements
Raise children off pavement...
Pulse on frauds hasten
When confronted with styles from gutter basements
Set to build like Freemasons, on three angles
All I see are Minstrel MC's on these channels
Perceived battles only held to sell albums
Propagate stereotypes that bleed out us
Our own doubt us
But I remain devout scholar of skills of forefathers
Ignorance was forced on us
Define honest, if we all breath diseased lies
Define the MC if all he spits are weak lines.

Who trades his culture for dollars?
The fool or the scholar?
Griot? Poet? Or White collared?

If my written words slurs
Then my speech correct
Keep my meaning inferred to test your intellect
If you remember HipHop nigga 'nuff respect
Deadverse spoken with broken dalek

Spoken word held meaning
Hostile acts provoked
Formed metaphors
Created urban folklore
Never meant for these upper echelon aurals
That bought and stripped morals
From art that's gift for us
At heart I'm strict purist
Spit thoughts for poorest
5'6'' Honduran sights set on own ruin
Rugged cadence meant to capture essence
Ancestor's wrath festers under surface of uttered sentence.

Who trades his culture for dollars?
The fool or the scholar?
Griot? Poet? Or White collared?

If my written words slurs
Then my speech correct
Keep my meaning inferred to test your intellect

Anyone into the "Anticon" lable?
A lot of good stuff on there.

nomadicfollower 04.19.2006 06:20 PM

Damn, I'm loving Low End Theory!

Patrique 05.05.2006 12:34 AM

Slick Rick is my hero. "Behind Bars" is a FANTASTIC album; he was so skilled he shined over mediocre beats most of his career.

Right now Ghostface is the best there is. Check out his new album "Fishscale" or if you can find it the mixtape "Hidden Darts III". He's got another album coming out later this year with MF Doom which should be godly.

Most won't dig this but I'm down with the Diplomats. Cam'ron has a totally unique style and Juelz Santana gets better every day. JR Writer is also a perfectly good rhymer. The rest aren't that great but you can't knock the Dips style. Problem is a lot of their fans are fucking dipshits.

I love the hip hop. Find me on Slsk (same name as here) or message me to talk it.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 05.05.2006 01:16 AM

nomadicfollower 06.15.2006 11:23 AM

Bump (not a word used much lately).
Got Gravediggaz's 6 Feet Deep, love it. It's in a genre called horrocore, which essentially is a genre of hip-hop concerned with death, killing, and suicide; which is great, because that's not something you'd normally find yourself singing along with, but the songs are so catchy it can't be helped. Like 1-800-suicide-----

So you wanna die, commit suicide
Dial 1-800-Cyanide line
Far as life, yo it ain't worth it
Put a rope around your neck and jerk it
The trick didn't work
Your life was fucked up from the first day of birth
After watching Jackie Gleason walk into a precinct
Gun down the captain for no fucking reason
And get some LSD or a drink from the bar
Get behind your wheel and crash the car
Like Desert Storm, got bombs for the war
confront an alligator, let it eat ya raw
Back to the function, riding the caboose to hell
BZZZZZT touched the third rail.
You fucked up chicken, now you just got fried
Cause it's a suicide

Verse Two: Too Poetic/Grym Reaper

Hey you little rich kid, what's your beef?
Come and tell the Grym Reaper all of your grief
You asked for a Benz and you only got a Jeep
Your pop's got endz, but yo he's mad cheap
Maybe you're a bastard child you think
Mom and dad are white and you're dark as ink
Maybe you're Sicilian with a tan
But you hate lasagna and the pizza man
Now you stand on the grave digga locked and
You're singing the blues about the rough life you've got
Not
You don't wanna live no more
I guess you're really ready for the grave yard tour
When you get home just fill up your windows and you doors
Turn your oven on high for about four hours
Light you a blunt, kiss your ass goodbye
You gassed yourself 'cause it's a suicide

Interlude: Scott (the Moleman) Harding:

Yep
I've said it before and I'll say it again
Life moves pretty fast
If you don't stop and look around every once in a while
you could miss it

Verse Three: Prince Rakeem/Ryzarector

Six fucking devils stepped up playing brave God
Had the fucking nerve to try and enta my grave yard
I'm the Ryzarector, be my sacrafice
Commit suicide and I'll bring you back to life
The first was convinced
Stuck a water hose in his mouth at full blast so his head can explode
Second said hmmmm that's good but I can top it
Put an ax up to his head and then he chopped it
Blood shot out in every direction
The rest didn't know what to do, I made suggestions
Put a slug in your mug, overdose on a drug
Wet your hair stick a knife in the plug
Or be like Richard Pryor set your balls on fire
Better yet go hang yourself with a barbed wire
Three and Four fell deep into spell and
Ran to the zoo, locked themselves in a lion's den
Number Five said it ain't worth being alive
Smoked a dust suede, mixed it with cynaide
The only one to escape was number Six
He went home
Sat in the tub and slit his wrists
Yeah, more graves to dig. Goodbye
There's no need to cry...
... cause we all die

nomadicfollower 06.15.2006 11:24 AM

Haha, Del is hilarious. I always wondered if it's somewhat related to the song "3000" by Dr.Octogon, which pretty much has the same content. And if you like Del, you should definitely check out Dr.Octogon - Dr.Octogoly. It's terrific and the beats are dope.

I have to listen to De La Soul more :(. I have one of their albums, but only listened to it once due to having a kajillion new artists to listen to

floatingslowly 02.22.2007 02:19 PM

yeah, I have Dr. Octogon, but I couldn't get into as much as I wanted to. Dan is a super-producer, but I'm not sure he's cut out for MC work.

seriously though, you can't go wrong with De La Soul.

I know! I think I'm going to listen to it tonight then. Dan is an excellent beatmaker, it somewhat reminds me of Cannibal Ox's beats

Hmm, I haven't heard the last 3, but I've heard of Prefuse 73. I'm not a big fan of Aesop at all though :(, but the course of Daylight has good lyrics. "All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day; put the pieces back together my way". When it comes to Def Jux, I'm all for EL-P and Cannibal Ox. I'll check the myspace link when I get home (myspace is blocked on the school computers :()
