Chester; A Historical and Topographical Account of the City (1903), written by the quite superbly monikered Bertram C A Windle and illustrated by Edmund H New (Edmund is a quite excellent name, I think). I purchased it today.

Pookie 05.23.2007 04:28 PM

Just finished this:

I got it free at a conference and read it during the 3 hour train journey back.
Like all McEwan's books, it's good, but has nothing that will stay with you for long.
But it does have one real laugh-out-loud moment, which made me laugh like a drain.

el duderino 05.23.2007 04:44 PM

not 'reading' but listenin to an audiobook of HP Lovecrafts 'Call of Cthuhlu' - makes for good listening during work

Paycheck and Other Classic Stories by Philip K. Dick. i just finished "The Skull," and i'm in the middle of "Stability."

cosmokramer 05.27.2007 05:34 PM

I'm reading House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I'm about 100 pages in and really enjoying it so far.

sarramkrop 05.30.2007 04:17 PM

I'm reading every single thing on the giant Warhol book my friend got me, including all the original newspaper articles that he got the pictures for certain series from. It's so good, it made my day completely.

!@#$%! 05.30.2007 04:21 PM

im reading a motherfucking contract.

im going to take off work early today & pick a book from the library

what should it be? good summer reading, anyone?

Dead-Air 05.31.2007 11:47 PM

Over at the the Science Fiction EZ Board we're gearing up for our next Group Read - and just for a change, we'll be running it from June 15th to July 15th.

The author we're spotlighting this time is M. John Harrison, whose most recent novels have included the acclaimed "Nova Swing", "Light", and "Signs of Life" - but we're going back three decades to The Centauri Device, described at the time as "a galaxy-spanning novel of intrigue and violence in the great tradition of the all-time classics of science fiction adventure." A mysterious weapon of galaxy-shattering power, a hero threatened on all sides by warring military forces, spectacular battles between fleets of heavily-armed space cruisers, and deadly interstellar intrigue? Sounds like fun, right?

So grab a copy, and get ready for thrills, excitement, and major explosions, both in the book and on our forum, starting on June 15th! Just join us in the M. John Harrison thread.

Attempting to read James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Just finished reading Kafka's Metamorphosis. Honestly it's the first book I've read since The Bell Jar in Spring 2006. Who am I kidding?

SynthethicalY 06.01.2007 12:41 AM

The metamorphosis is one of my favorites along with the Stranger by Albert Camus. It is just sad how the family turned against him.

schizophrenicroom 06.01.2007 01:18 AM

special topics in calamity physics

i'm barely 100 pages in and already it's my new favorite. i've never been so entranced by the world an author's set up like this before.

Danny Himself 06.01.2007 09:21 AM

The Memoirs of Vic Reeves.

sonicl 06.01.2007 09:27 AM

That Daydream Nation book. It's bloody awful.

Danny Himself 06.01.2007 09:29 AM

I'm glad I haven't bought it. Even Thurston doesn't like it.

Gulasch Noir 06.02.2007 01:41 AM

A De Sade biography. And I'm very happy to read regularly again. In the past 10 months I only managed it to read one book. The next one either will be a book by Thomas Lehr, by Jose Saramago or a David Lynch biography.

Alex's Trip 06.02.2007 02:13 AM

The Crucible - Arthur Miller...

shentov 06.02.2007 07:29 AM

Milan Kundera- L'immortalite (sp?)

awesome author.

Katy 06.03.2007 03:52 PM

A slightly crappy biography about Nureyev's later years (written by a former stage manager) leading up to his death from AIDS in 1993.. 'Enduring Love' by Ian McEwan (because I watched the film the otehr night).. 'The Truce' by Primo Levi (because I've been reading it since January and haven't properly finished it yet).. and 'I'm With the Band' by Pamela Des Barres (new edition).

(The first and the last, the ballet and groupie memoirs, are both from the library.)

Im not to sure if that would work out well, he's definately a leftist, saving the witch's and everything but i dont think his dick curves to the left, if you know what I mean, winkity-wink, nudge nudge.

you have a better shot with Brick. [Ref. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof]

Alex's Trip 06.09.2007 12:55 PM

Unfortunately, it is so.

speaking of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, I just started reading Ballard's Crash and now all I want to do is swerve my car into Elizabeth Taylor.

I finished reading Crash. I'll never be able to drive normally again, especially with a stick shift.

I also finished Murakami's new book After Dark. It was ok, but I definately do not see any similarity between him and Kafka. It wasnt a Kafka-esque like high at all. He didnt make me feel like a bug.
