I've got alot to say, but since the forum limits the number of characters per post, I've got to break it in half...
Trump is the EPITOME of male white corporate oppression. How could anyone listen to a band like Sonic Youth and be of the Trumpist mindset? The absence of the band this community came together for has led to a massive drop in quality posters. When I was originally here during the Bush Jr. era, we chewed up right-wingers and spit 'em out. Now the alt-right has infected here as well?! Trump has exactly 2 talents: 1) making himself look better than he is and 2) leaving others to clean up his mess when things inevitably fall apart. He's only rich because of his inherited wealth from his father, he's only famous because his exploits make for good tabloid fodder, and he's only President because we still have an archaic system that somehow equates empty land with people... |
...3 MILLION people's votes were basically flushed down the toilet, simply because they were in the "wrong" state. The only thing he's MAYBE good for is ironic comedy.
Anyone who supports Trump is either a genuine fool or someone so desperate for change and/or brainwashed by right-wing media into thinking the Republican party aren't keeping them under their thumb by paying lip service to "hardworking Christian family values" while robbing them blind to ensure the rich stay firmly in power, getting richer while making the poor even poorer. I thought you had to have a head on your shoulders or at least a forward-thinking mindset to appreciate SY's music. Guess I was wrong. |

It happens with so much music: The Smiths, Springsteen... I'm sure some slave owners dug the songs of pain their "properties" were singing. Homophobes dancing to Cole Porter. Racists rockin' to electric Chicago blues. The disconnection is and has been staggering. |

Oh man, don't get me started on Bruce Springsteen fans. It's the same with Neil Young fans. You ever see that clip where he was playing with CSN and they did a song called flip flop live which was a song about how useless W. Bush is (oh those glory days). So many fans were storming out of the gig shouting at the cameras how they'll never listen to Neil Young's music ever again. I mean, you guys have followed his career pretty closely, right? Why would him coming out as being against Bush be a surprise? But yeah, back to the point of not understanding how you can be totally on the opposite end of what sonic youth have always preached and be ok with it. I can't ever imagine wanting to listen to Nazi punk. |

Pure, unadulterated ignorance on full display here, folks. While Sonic Youth do have some political songs, they are far from being a political band. But please, GeneticKiss, continue to tell me what I'm allowed to like/dislike. I used to be all for diversity and inclusion, but now it seems group-think is the way to go. You've convinced me!  |

The irony of this coming from a Trump supporter. You got a stupid man, you got a Ku Klux Klan |

Funny you quote Youth Against Fascism, as Sonic Youth's most overtly political songs often end up being cringe inducing...see: Youth Against Fascism and Peace Attack. |
nothing more cringe-inducing than a maga chud
|
Tbh, if you think Sonic Youth aren't political then you haven't been paying much attention. Like, at all.

While members of SY have certainly expressed their personal political views over the years (Lee's interest in the Occupy movement years ago, Kim canvassing for Bernie most recently, etc), Sonic Youth has never been a political band - at least not in comparison to Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine and the like. Can you name 10 overtly political Sonic Youth songs? I'll give you the first two: 1. Youth Against Fascism 2. Peace Attack |
Quote:
You're ignoring their interviews which they seemed to talk about politics in every one of them. Sure you'll screech that that doesn't make them a political band or something. Edit:add to that the amount of benefit concerts they'd played over the years. |

Desperation = a state of despair, typically one which results in rash or extreme behavior Federal Judge Hires High-Powered D.C. Attorney To Defend His Actions In The Flynn Case Why would a Federal Judge need to defend his actions in a case? (let this sink in) Is Judge Sullivan ignorant regarding his authority? Is Judge Sullivan just playing politics?? To recap, Judge Sullivan appointed a retired Judge John Gleason to prosecute General Flynn because the Department Of Justice wanted to drop the charges. The DOJ was admitting there was no legitimate reason for their initial investigation. It appears to me that Judge Sullivan got caught up trying to use his Civil Authority in a criminal case......but it can’t be this simple, can it? So the Writ Of Mandamus is granted by the circuit court (appeals court) and it requires Judge Sullivan to explain his decision of appointing outside council. Also, Judge Sullivan must explain why as Judge of the case, he instructed the retired Judge John Gleason on how he should carry out his actions. Now that Judge Sullivan has painted himself into a Judicial corner, and the circuit court is seeking answers......Judge Sullivan lawyers up??? A Federal Judge ”shouldn’t” need representation to respond to a Writ Of Mandamus......should he? I’m guessing the conflicts are numerous! Also, obvious reasons why Judge Sullivan should have recused himself and didn't, therefore overstepping his authority in his handling of this case. Quote:
Mr. Schunk, PLEASE help shed some light on this......by hiring an attorney, is Judge Sullivan now saying he is a party to the case? Can a Judge be a party to the case and still preside over the case? Granted, Judge Sullivan did bring in retired Judge John Gleason, but by doing so, did Judge Sullivan relinquish his authority over the case? Lastly, and this is hard to imagine and I (doubt?) it’s legal......but Judge Sullivan can’t seek outside council regarding how he should rule?????? |

Alright, I'll bite. Only because I wanna see how you move the goalpost because you can't handle the idea that your viewpoints have absolutely nothing in line with what sonic youth as a collective ever preached.
Dude Ranch Nurse Paper Cup Exit Do you believe in rapture Society is a hole Teenage riot Chapel Hill Anti-orgasm Rain on tin Youth against facism Peace attack Don't forget protest-records.com, all the interviews (especially in their later years) they did where they talked about politics and their stance against Republicans, the benefit concerts they played, the gender politics they shouted from the beginning that Trump and his cronies abhor. They were never slogan chanters like gang of four, fugazi and whoever but the politics were always there. Now fuck off and go listen to skrewdriver instead. |

Lol. Moron needs lyrics to be nice and clear so he can understand them. Like I say, skrewdriver might be a bit easier for you to understand. Go there.

Anyway, in more Trump news. Twitter has finally decided to call him out on his constant lies and included a fact check warning on a post about mail voting. He's not liking this at all and saying it's impeding his free speech (it isn't) and threatening to close down Twitter (he can't).
Been overdue for Twitter to do it. |

It's about 9/11. Not sure what else to add to that.
And God save the Queen? Hahaha! If that's your standard for a political song then bless. You keep telling yourself they aren't. |
Written as Sonic Nurse was coming out...
"For a group who have existed mostly under right-wing regimes and whose caustic, experimental guitar sound has seen them labelled as one of the most influential bands of their time, Sonic Youth have largely avoided making political statements with their music." ... "Sonic Nurse closes with the band's only significant protest song since Youth Against Fascism from 1992's Dirty album. Over six minutes long, Peace Attack was written by vocalist/guitarist, Moore, and its theme ensures Sonic Youth's stance is clear, says Ranaldo." We'll never agree, so this is my last post on the subject. But - yes - I will continue to enjoy the music of Sonic Youth, even though you'd like to exercise control over the music as media (#EasternBloc). |

I do think Kim is an overtly political figure but I'd say the others largely fall into the same standard liberal category that applies to most 'creatives'. But it's always felt more meaningful for Kim, especially in relation to feminist politics, from early songs like Flower, her becoming a kind of figurehead for Riot Grrl, onto later songs like 'Swimsuit Issue', etc. A few songs aside, I would've never described SY as a political band in the 80s but I do think it became more of a focus from the 90s onwards, when Kim's profile and influence within the band started to increase. As for whether it's an oxymoron for a SY fan to even contemplate voting for Trump, I'd say it depends what attracted them to the band in the 1st place. If they're more into stuff like 'Female Mechanic' then it probably is. Less so if they're more about stuff like DV69. |
Quote:
See, a nice level-headed post devoid of words like 'moron', 'dolt', or 'chud'. SY's musical dynamics are what originally attracted me to the band in 1991. The music - combined with mysteriously poetic lyrics and themes - were/are an undeniable combination for me. Sonic Youth will always be my all-time favorite band. If I dismissed bands/art based on liberal leanings I wouldn't have ANYTHING to listen to. I like the punk aesthetic of deriving energy and inspiration from rebellion...fighting the machine...and/or rallying against "the man". However, in practice, I believe that capitalism and small government serve more people than socialism and big government. By no means is it perfect, but I don't know of a better model. |
