shit like chronicles of riddick or underworld could be as fantastic if not more than zardoz but they get derailed but vapid action shit and very dull ideas. they lack a "philosophy" (i hate to use that word like that, but it's easy to understand).

the thing with zardoz is that it was an anti-hippie movie in a time when people believed strongly in pacifist enlightened communal utopias--- the movie dealt with issues like evolution, free will, god, violence-- it was in fact a bit (a lot) nietzschean.

today's "thinking" movies are less epic and focus more on the individual-- charlie kaufman's projects for example, or i heart huckabees; and science fictions, which could grapple with big issues have gotten weak and childish cuz of that shitty star wars, or just action-based a la terminator. dune could have been that but failed. cronenberg does, but he makes different sorts of movies, smaller.

theres no reason there couldnt be a big mindfuck of a movie out there, though, just waiting for the right combination of elements to explode. but to fit the times, it would have to be a huge mindfucking criticism of the emptiness of late capitalism (ipods as a cure for unhappiness)-- if someone could make a good updated version of don de lillo's "white noise", it would be awesome.

atsonicpark 10.26.2009 07:36 AM

made a list over on the noise fanatics boards of obscure masterpieces at the top of my head. figured someone out there might appreciate my list so here it is:

Actium Maximus: War of the Alien Dinosaurs (you've never seen worse special effects than this; an unintentionally bizarre, amazing film)
Angel Dust
Baby Blood (aka the Evil Within)
Back Against the Wall
Baconhead
Beaver and Buttface
Bed You Sleep In (this has a distinct Twin Peaks vibe and is really, really disturbing -- love this fucking movie)
Bell from Hell
Beyond the Limits
Black Roses
Bloodmoon
Bloody Wednesday
Body Melt
Boneyard
Breaking Point (by the guy who made Thriller: A Cruel Picture)
Bride of Frank
Bullets Over Summer
Burning Moon
Butterfly Kiss
The Cat
Chaos in Outerspace
Cop
Corndog Man
Crazy Family
Crazy Lips (also see: Gore From Outer Space)
Dandy Dust
Dark Night of the Soul (aka Black Opium Graveyard Man)
Deadfall (extremely boring and shitty but Nicolas Cage's wacked-out performance is worth the price of the film -- or the youtube watch. Obscure for good reason, it sucks, but NICOLAS CAGE .. MAN.. you won't believe it, I promise)
Deadly Prey
Deadtime Stories
Dear Pillow
Death Bed: Bed that Eats
Death Drug
Death Powder
The Demon (not obscure, but definitely underrated)
Der Todesking
Dr. Lamb
Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon
Duck! The Carbine High Massacre
Fallen Angels (not too obscure but often overshadowed by Chungking Express..)
Fame Whore
Family Portraits: Trilogy of America
Family Viewing
Fatty Drives the Bus (an all-time fav; somehow I own 3 copies..?!)
Freak Orlando
Funeral Procession of Roses
Funky Forest
Galaxy Invader
Geek Maggot Bingo
The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai
Goodnight, God Bless
Haisu
Hi, Mom!
Hole in my Heart
Horror House on Highway 5
Id
Izo (not too obscure, but overlooked; easily Miike's best film)
Jefftowne
Jungle Burger
Kamillions
Katzelmacher
Kichiku Dai Enkai (probably the most disturbing film ever)
Killing Spree
Kill Me Again
L'Ennui
La Vie Nouvelle
Living
Love - Zero = Infinity
Lulu on the Bridge
Lurkers
Lyrical Nitrate
Magic of the Universe (kinda like Jodorowsky doing a children's film)
Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy
Man, Woman, and the Wall
Messiah of Evil
Microwave Massacre
Migrating Forms
Mod Fuck Explosion
Monster High (probably my favorite b-movie ever)
Monsturd
Most High (probably the best fictional drug movie I've seen)
Mute Witness (a surprisingly fun DePalma lite)
Mutilation Man
Mysterious Skin
Neon Maniacs
Nightmare Weekend
Night Train to Terror (an all time favorite)
Noisey Requiem
Once and Future Queen
Orgy of the Dead
Outside Out (all the musicians on here would love this weirdo masterpiece -- don't let the slight Phish connection stop you from watching it)
Pastoral: To Die In Country (the definition of masterpiece)
Pinnochio 964 (probably the least-obscure movie I'm mentioning, but I had to mention it since it's one of my all time favs)
Pistol Opera
Premutos: Lord of the Living Dead
Private Parts (not the Howard Stern film)
Rampo Noir (not too obscure)
Real Fiction
Red Rock West
Reflections of Evil
Relentless
Rock-a-Die Baby
Rock'n'Roll Nightmare
The Room (quickly becoming unobscure, still wanted to mention it)
Samurai Cop
Sante Fe
Scrap Heaven
Scumrock
Shaye and Kiki: Fun Bubble
Shopping for Fangs
Short Time
Shredder Orpheus
SICK
Sins of the Fleshapoids
Slime City
Small White House
Sombre
Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama
Spaceman
Speaking Parts
Special Needs
Splatter: Naked Blood (again, not TOO obscure but worth mentioning)
Spookies
Stairway to the Distant Past
Story of a Junkie
Strange Behaviour
Student Bodies (this one never gets the respect it deserves -- a completely dead-on, AWESOME horror-comedy)
Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator
Superstarlet A.D.
Superstition
Survey Map of a Paradise Lost
Sweet Movie (not too obscure, considering it's on Criterion, but I've never seen anyone mention it on here)
Taste of Tea
Terminal USA
Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except
Tokyo Eyes
Totally Fucked Up
Touch Me in the Morning
Townies
Trees Lounge
Unmasked Part 25
Used Cars (not so much obscure as simply "forgotten"; one of my favs!)
Viewer Discretion Advised
Viva La Muerte (aka Long Live Death.. Jodorowsky fans would love this)
Visions of Suffering
We Are the Strange
White of the Eye
Wool 100%
Worst Horror Movie Ever Made
Zardoz (not too obscure, but again, forgotten)
Zero

Santa Claus: The Movie

!@#$%! 10.26.2009 10:17 PM

a goofy french comedy, with an absurd ending, but monica bellucci naked, the fucking glorious naked ass and tits and oh so fucking awesome!! the movie is ok, the tits get 5 stars

more nipples-- susan sarandon's here-- briliant

goths apparently love this, and it's nice and stylized, but not that great

also started watching this:

so far, disappointing, i expected better from such a hyped series, but it's onlly been 3 episodes and i hope it will pick up.

and then

embarrassingly retarded, but had its funny moments

atsonicpark 10.26.2009 10:24 PM

Yeah, if you're basing Eva off of just the first 3 episodes... well, don't. Trust me. It doesn't get AMAZING until about episode 13 or so.

cool. it's that stupid boy that breaks my balls--- except when he "berserked" ha ha ha

atsonicpark 10.26.2009 10:29 PM

I thought the show was boring and lousy at first but every episode gets a bit better but.. well, I don't want to ruin it for you, but eventually.. earth-shattering, brain-melting things will happen.

Sonic Youth 37 10.27.2009 10:08 AM

Anyone here ever seen Men Behind The Sun? (Atsonic, I'm looking in your direction.)

atsonicpark 10.27.2009 10:16 AM

Yeah, it was alright. Kinda boring, but it had some shocking scenes.

Philosophy of a Knife is a lot more shocking... but a lot more amateurish.

!@#$%! 10.27.2009 10:42 AM

ha ha, evangelion improved a lot when i switched the audio track to japanese (and added subtitles-- i don't understand japanese, unfortunately). i know he's supposed to be a whiny-ass pussy little shithead, but his english voice made this trait unbearable-- i wanted to strangle the little fucker. in japanese he's still a pussy, but not completely insufferable!

atsonicpark 10.27.2009 12:26 PM

Never heard the English dub, I'm sure it's terrible!

The only show I've ever liked the English dub on is Super Milk Chan..

Actually, Cowboy Bebop wasn't too bad.

gmku 10.27.2009 12:48 PM

DeadDiscoDildo 10.31.2009 05:58 PM

I just rented The orphanage (by del toro), the Order (cuz ive heard mixed things and want to determine myself, I was becoming a ledger fan and then he died so..

also I just rented the legend of 1900 because I saw a few ppl talking about it and it looked interesting.

I'll give my thoughts after I watch them!

phoenix 10.31.2009 06:17 PM

automatic bzooty 10.31.2009 07:27 PM

the shawshank redemption (for school)
the rocky horror picture show
purple rain

DeadDiscoDildo 10.31.2009 08:37 PM

The orphanage was pretty kickass. I liked the ending. 8/10 only because some parts were kind of obvious but I still enjoyed it...Guillermo Del Torro is a great filmmaker

That one was a keeper for me as well. Good creepy visuals too

DeadDiscoDildo 10.31.2009 10:52 PM

Yeah, my favorite shots were the far away shot of that cave on the beach and then when it flashed to clouds moving rapidly in the sky. Overall great movie.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.31.2009 10:53 PM

Seen any other movies by him besides that and Pans Labrynth? I feel like checking out more...

DeadDiscoDildo 10.31.2009 10:56 PM

Holy shit, I just checked IMDB and in the next few years he is making The Hobbit, The Hobbit 2, Frankenstein, and Pinnochio....

automatic bzooty 11.01.2009 12:14 AM

shit shit shit. and not even the kind of shit that loops back into goodness. no.

i dunno. i knew what was coming, of course. and i fell asleep in the middle. some of it was actually quite good, and the rest we made lulz-worthy.
