Glice 08.16.2007 06:15 AM

Hey there, easy targets. I have yet to hear a Dinosaur Jr song that I can actually remember. I've probably heard Freak Scene a million times, but I couldn't, for the life of me, tell you how the chorus goes. If, in fact, it has a chorus.

sonicl 08.16.2007 06:19 AM

Dino Jr songs don't have choruses, Glice. Where other band's songs would have a chorus, Dino Jr songs have an unnecessary long guitar solo instead.

sarramkrop 08.16.2007 06:24 AM

J Mascis' solos are ace sometimes.

screamingskull 08.16.2007 06:25 AM

sometimes, but sometimes they are unnecessarily long

sarramkrop 08.16.2007 06:26 AM

That's why I said sometimes, sometimes.

screamingskull 08.16.2007 06:29 AM

ha ha ha, okay, alright then.

Pookie 08.16.2007 06:30 AM

New Order were better than Joy Division.

Yes.

The Velvet Underground felt more close to The Who than any other bands that were making music at the same time as them, therefore I feel close to them too. The good Who, not the bad Who.

These must have been done, but: I don't like Bowie or Bolan. Bowie less, I just don't get it.

No, you couldn't care less than you already do. Could implies you care, and could care less.

Pookie 08.16.2007 06:48 AM

swa(y) you fool, can't you see I'm trying to tell you I love you.

ZEROpumpkins 08.16.2007 06:49 AM

I just can't dig the Flaming Lips. I was into a couple of songs off Transmissions and Clouds, but that quickly fizzled away. Not quite sure why, I think that it's Wayne's voice. Don't get me wrong, I like Abandoned Hospital Ship, She Don't Use Jelly and Slow Nerve Action, but not much else.

happy now?

No. Couldn't care less is a way of saying how little you care. It doesn't necessarily mean you literally care as little as you possibly could. It's just a way of making a point. Same as saying you hate something, when really you don't, like I hate the way Americans screw up the English language. I don't actually hate it...wait a minute, bad example.

I hate you (see).

Pookie 08.16.2007 06:53 AM

Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo. I get them mixed up, but hate them both (see previous post for definition of hate).

Don't say that when gmku's in the building. That loon will only go and start an Unpopular Grammatical Opinions thread:rolleyes: .

pbradley 08.16.2007 07:00 AM

In A Priest Driven Ambulence is better than anything the Flaming Lips did before and after.

I love 1970's Elvis much more than 1950's Elvis.

i wasn't relaying my personal opinions in the slightest. the vast majority of the listening public would call one musician talented and the other untalented. however, who are we to say which has a greater artistic value? that's all i was saying.

regarding classical music: to lend individual interpretation to a piece of music is obviously a skill that is hugely difficult to aquire, and takes a massive amount of sensitivity and creativity. this i agree with you on one hundred percent. i play the piano classically myself, and even if i don't do it very well, it really is the most wonderful aspect of playing.

p.s. when i said "following sheets of music that have been played in the same way for 300 years" i was regarding baroque piano/harpsichord music. it is actually almost impossible to perform a truly individual interpretation of most of the baroque keyboard works without actually altering the notes (something bach actually encouraged but which hardly anybody does). musicians have to inject personality with dynamics (which is impossible on a harpsichord) and these are dynamics which, for the most apart, are the dynamics widely encouraged and accepted by the scholarly institutions.
record labels, audiences and scholars obviously don't want to see their music slaughtered in this way so there is a limited creativity, which is on the opposite end of the spectrum of free improv. that is why i used the two examples.

all true my man. talent is talent though.

I fucking HATE the harpsichord. HATE

The Mission were better than The Sisters of Mercy.

racehorse 08.16.2007 07:55 AM

most stoner rock bores the pants off me.
when used tastefully (i.e. not in oasis songs) the cello is the most beautiful instrument to listen to, from jazz to classical to 20th century experimental to improv music.
eminem is an extremely talented man with an ingenious marketing scheme who has a number of amazing songs.

ZEROpumpkins 08.16.2007 08:02 AM

I agree on the cello part. Most songs with cello's are beautiful.
