i guess it's unpopular enough.

i like stevie ray vaughan, at least the first two albums.

ZEROpumpkins 08.17.2007 03:49 AM

The fact that Steve Albini is so insistant on defining Shellac as punk rock annoys me.

pbradley 08.25.2007 07:21 PM

I find Battles' Mirrored tedious and repetative. Other bands get away with the same riff repeated four or eight times because they have vocals to provide some counter melody. It just bores me most of the time.

skibs 08.28.2007 11:24 PM

I think Highly Evolved by the Vines is one of the greatest records ever.

pbradley 08.28.2007 11:29 PM

Steve Albini's personality annoys me, particularly his persistence in defining Shellac as punk rock and his dedication to analogue recording. I mean, yes I'd buy vinyl if I could easily rip the songs to my mp3 player, but I just don't have the time to just sit down and listen to music, that's why I listen to it when I'm out doing stuff. But you know, he's a good musician, I like his work.

Torn Curtain 10.03.2007 05:03 AM

I don't like no wave apart from Glenn Branca.

Torn Curtain 10.03.2007 05:11 AM

I tend to like proto-punk and post-punk but not punk itself.

ZEROpumpkins 10.04.2007 03:50 AM

Weezer rock

Though generally now 99% of what could be called indie-rock or alternative rock is the worst, most soulless shit ever. Bunch of assholes trying to make the most average music ever.

what about Shellac is NOT punk rock?

If only punk rock was more like Shellac!

punk rock is not a sound, it is an attitude, a mentality.

jetengine 10.04.2007 09:35 AM

The first two and a half Partridge Family albums now sound like classic rock. Ditto for some of those old Archies singles and the first Bay City Rollers album.

fugazifan 10.04.2007 10:23 AM

crazy horses by the osmond brothes is a great tune. and the crazy keybords in it are awsome.
a great song for SY to cover....

Savage Clone 10.04.2007 10:38 AM

That opinion is not unpopular with me.

SynthethicalY 10.04.2007 10:42 AM

The best singer last night was NOT the blonde bird, it was the tall bird in the dark green dress with the featureless face. I contend that everyone preferred the other one because she had a better rack. The pianist was alright, but he wasn't all that.

I realise this might be described as a slightly obscure opinion, but it's true, so there, the 60-odd other people who were there last night.

Rob Instigator 10.04.2007 11:58 AM

that is the most indie obscure post ever

Message boards are the last vestige of the spent masturbator, still intent on wasting time in some neg-heroic fashion. Be damned all who sail here.

I prefer the taste of artificial cherries like Starbursts to real cherries.

This has nothing to do with music. But that's more like an unpopular fact.

That's fine, I only have their first two albums :D
As for your other opinion, I also agree, but I wouldn't define Weezer as indie. They have the sound that was akin to indie rock at the time, but they aren't on an Indie label.

MysticalChicken 10.04.2007 10:31 PM

I can't stand:

The Killers
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Smashing Pumpkins (okay, this one's more of a I'll-tolerate-them-albeit-grudgingly thing)
She Wants Revenge
The Used (I think they're my most-hated band ever)
Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, et al.
System of a Down

I agree with the OP regarding Elvis Costello's This Year's Model. It's my favorite of all the CDs I own by him. I can't not dance to "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea." Also:

Quote:

the kinks are 40 times better than the beatles (listen to "we are the village green preservation society)

Aaand I'm planning on buying that CD next time I go music shopping.

I don't think Weezer's Green album is as bad as people say it is. (And I have the first two as well... the debut is my favorite.)

I like Bright Eyes. These are unpopular opinions, right? *shifty eyes* (But I don't have any of his CDs.)

There are probably more, but I have to go because 30 Rock is on.

ZEROpumpkins 10.04.2007 11:06 PM

Mystical Chicken those aren't that unpopular. I agree with almost everything you said.

alyasa 10.04.2007 11:14 PM

It's very unpopular.

MysticalChicken 10.04.2007 11:23 PM

Crap wording on my part. I should have typed "we're talking about unpopular opinions, right?" I was referring to the fact that not very many people seem to like Bright Eyes.

(I didn't get much sleep last night...)

More opinions:

I love Belle and Sebastian.

"Bus Stop" by The Hollies is my most favorite song of all time.

I also think "The Air that I Breathe" by The Hollies is cool.

I will never, ever, ever get sick of the following songs: Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, Better Man by Pearl Jam, Because the Night by Patti Smith, Long Snake Moan by PJ Harvey, Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf, The World Has Turned and Left Me Here and The Good Life by Weezer, and pretty much everything off Elvis Costello's My Aim is True.

I love The Pretenders and have been a fan since I was seven years old. (Okay, that one's probably not unpopular... I hope...)

"I get up when I want, except on Wednesdays, when I get rudely awakened by the dustman" is possibly one of the best lines of alternative-rock music ever. (Note I said ONE of the best lines.)

I kind of like Maroon 5. A little. Their new singles make me dance.

This is getting too positive... let's see... I hate the Dave Matthews Band. They should have a slogan: "Dave Matthews Band. After fifteen years, we still don't rock."

Nickelback is a dog crap on the heel of the shoe that is modern music.

I like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. ("Gimme Some Salt" is so great to dance to.)

Buffalo Tom is one of the best alternative rock bands of all time. (Again, probably not unpopular.)

3. The Killers are nothing more than a 21st century "new wave" band.
4. Lightning Bolt is a ruins ripoff.
5. Wolf Eyes wishes they were half as witty as Black Dice.
6. 95% of the people on this board didn't know who Jim O'Rourke was before his work on SYR.
7. NYG&F was a horrible album for SY standards.
8. Locust are an incredible band.
9. US Punk Rock > UK Punk Rock
10. Sex Pistols and Steve Jones in particular, ripped of the Dolls ridiculously.
11. Sub Pop has gone soft.
12. David Grubbs > Jim O'Rourke
13. The Postal Service sound like generic car commercial music.
14. The Flaming Lips new album is great.
15. Prog reemergence is "so 2000".
16. Faust > Can
17. Slowdive is unoriginal and just another carbon copy of My Bloody Valentine.
18. Shoegazer is "so early 90s" and that Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse, Catherine Wheel, and Slowdive all sound the same.
19. People in Los Angeles need to get over shoegazer and realize that there was much better music after 1992.
20. The last great true hardcore punk movement was Gravity in the early 90s.
21. Royal Trux > Jon Spencer
22. Majority of the new psychedelic noise folk bands today cannot pull off what Califone/Red Red Meat were doing 15 years ago.
23. Jim O'Rourke never made a huge noticeable impact on Sonic Youth.
24. The Hypnotics were doing stoner rock much better than the 21st century stoner rock bands.
25. Trans Am still kick ass.

I could go on but I'm sure this will be enough to create a war of words.

Soft Bulletin is easily the most overrated alternative album of the last 10 years. Flaming Lips are overrated and are only famous for their live shows.

Actually, this fits better in the popular music opinions thread.
