So this cute* tall (giraffe really) religious girl in a few of my classes and whom I've known since my freshman year has finally been broken by public education and now says things are "gay." No the genre thing is pretty good. I'm guessing it is based off the stats that apple keeps based on their itunes store. meaning, the x amount of people who bought this album also bought this album, etc. so it has a lot of valid foundation to recommend. And it probably checks your library to see if your tastes match up with what they are about to recommend. it could be incredibly fine tuned, just thinking about it, but I don';t knwo what goes on exactly, just speculation.
