Look, I understand you think Quentin Tarantino is an overrated hack, but please stop referring to Reservoir Dogs as a City on Fire remake. It's very disrespectful to him and fans of that film (such as myself).

I see Tarantino sort of the same way as Radiohead in that both of them bring elements of the underground/avant garde to the mainstream, and mainstream music/film is all the better for it.

And From Dusk Till Dawn deserves at least a 7. I didn't even know there were sequels--seemed pretty conclusive to me.

*long rant deleted*

What's disrespectful is that Tarantino stole key scenes and dialogue from another movie and gave no credit to the director until he was threatened to be sued. I still like Reservoir Dogs, hence my rating. Regardless, the film is technically a remake -- it's a version of a film that's already been made. I am taking a guess you haven't watched City on Fire, nor has most Tarantino fans (though, honestly, most probably wouldn't because they don't want to read subtitles, for whatever reason).

Either way, I am curious what exactly you find "Avant garde" about his work? Seems like he's just some dude in love with Hark, Lam, Scorsese, DePalma, Kar-Wai, Godard... nothing original at all, and certainly not as deep as any of the aforementioned directors. He's not bad, but the constant hero worship thrown at him is baffling. His work is just a bit too shallow for me, but I won't deny that he's done some entertaining stuff. He's a good exploitation director. And if he can get people into better films, then.. well.. that's respectable. I would have never have known about the masterpiece ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU CHOU if it wasn't for him, so I gotta give him that. That's about it, though.

atsonicpark 01.22.2010 02:31 AM

Been I watching some great stuff in the past few days..

Jon Jost's Homecoming - 8/10

Geo-Lobotomy - 7/10

Peppermint Candy - 7/10
Goodburger - 8/10

the rebirth - 8/10

One of the saddest movies ever.

atsonicpark 01.22.2010 02:34 AM

It's really absurd how great Jon Jost is. I've only seen 7 of his 25 movies and they've all been 8's, 9's, with one 10. He has been directing for nearly 40 years and is pretty much unknown. Ridiculous. He's just mindblowing. HIGHLY reccomended.

Also, reccomend this..

REVANCHE

I like the atmosphere in the Dead Zone quite a bit. The music.. I dunno.. everything about it.. it has something I can't put my finger on.

Fav. Cronenberg is Videodrome, of course.

I am about to watch THE PIANO TEACHER before I go to sleep.

car dialogue between owen and del toro?
he rated it, 5.
you cracka!

noisereductions 01.22.2010 08:52 AM

am I making this up, or did Scott Spiegel direct From Dusk Till Dawn 3?

chicka 01.22.2010 10:16 AM

The thing I like best are his sound tracks he always puts those golden nuggets buried under the million dollar songs. Jackie Brown's soundtrack
with the plot with the acting makes it a 5/5 for me. Like Rob it's probably my favorite then again talk to me tomorrow and it maybe Pulp Fiction

noisereductions 01.22.2010 10:53 AM

the Death Proof soundtrack is unbelievable.

Rob Instigator 01.22.2010 11:01 AM

There was music on Deathproof? I did not notice because of the HORRID SUCK

Derek 01.22.2010 11:20 AM

Is there anyone else except NR that actually likes Death Proof? All my buddies liked it but it was not my thing.

demonrail666 01.22.2010 11:50 AM

The car chase at the end was good. Not quite Mad Max levels of good but still good.

well I assume that Tarantino likes it. But it might just be me and him. I don't care though. I love it. Oh wait, my brother loved it too. I forgot about that. So there's three of us. My wife likes it. But she doesn't love it. So four. That's the final headcount I think.

demonrail666 01.22.2010 11:57 AM

i watched it again recently and enjoyed it far more the second time around.

noisereductions 01.22.2010 11:59 AM

I just think it's a really fun film. I tend to watch it a couple of times when the weather first gets hot. I also tend to listen to the soundtrack A LOT during the Summer months. (There's a handful of CD's that my wife and I tend to listen to every Summer driving around from yardsale to yardsale and this sndtrk is one of them) Just reminds me of a fun shitty b-movie a la USA Up All Night (a comparison I've made in this thread probably a half-dozen times already, so sorry if you've already heard it...).

nicfit 01.22.2010 12:09 PM

I like it a lot, verbose retro junk with nice photography.

hahahaha, no kidding man. Y'know what? Just the face that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is wearing a cheerleaders outfit makes it a 5/5 !!!

atsonicpark 01.22.2010 12:58 PM

Even eli roth didn't like it. He said, "It didn't work."

Scott Spiegel rules. INTRUDER is awesome, as is his acting in SKINNED ALIVE. Never forget the masterpiece THOU SHALT NOT KILL.. EXCEPT.

Yes, I did. Look again. 5/10.

He directed that car scene in Sin City (with Clive Owen) which looks an awful lot like one of the car scenes in PIERROT LE FOU.

noisereductions 01.22.2010 12:59 PM

Adam, you think Eli Roth sucks, so why would you care what he thought of it? :)

Intruder is excellent.

nicfit 01.22.2010 01:00 PM

I don't need Eli Roth to tell me what I shall and shallnot like, I like what I like.
And I like Death Proof quite a lot.

well yeah that too. I mean, there's really no reason to try to convince anyone it's good or bad... I liked it a lot. That's all.

atsonicpark 01.22.2010 01:22 PM

Hey, if any of you have ever wondered what you had to sign in order to appear on a crappy reality contest show on Fox, here is a particularly humorous/pitiful sounding clause at the end of the terms of agreement. I am only posting this because I think it's amusing, remarkably interesting, and I had it saved in a "sticky note" on my computer and I don't want it to be there anymore.

I understand that I may reveal, and other parties may reveal, information about me that is of a
personal, private, embarrassing, or unfavorable nature, which information may be factual and/or fictional. I

further understand that my appearance, depiction, and/or portrayal in the Program may be disparaging,
defamatory, embarrassing, or of an otherwise unfavorable nature which may expose me to public ridicule,
humiliation, or condemnation. I acknowledge and agree that Producer shall have the right to (a) include any
or all such information and any or all such appearances, depictions, or portrayals in the Program as edited
by Producer in its sole discretion, and (b) to broadcast and otherwise exploit the Program containing any or
all such information and any or all such appearances, depictions, or portrayals in any manner whatsoever in
any and all media, whether now known or hereafter devised, or for any other purpose, throughout the
universe in perpetuity.

tl;dr
You can put 100% of your effort into humiliating me and ruining my life on a daily basis for the rest of eternity, throughout the entire fucking universe without discretion and I have absolutely no right to say anything about it if you choose to do that to me... I mean, I signed this crazy paper!

Obviously they have better things to do.... but it's funny that they could conceivably turn the Fox network into the "*insert name* humilationg network", buy every broadcasting medium in the universe, and have the same humiliating 20 seconds of your life playing 24/7, forever.
