Dozens of coronavirus antibody tests on the market were never vetted by the FDA, leading to accuracy concerns

Aggressive marketing of the tests could confuse those clamoring for the products to determine who may have developed disease-fighting antibodies

By
Laurie McGinley
April 19, 2020 at 6:30 a.m. MDT

The Food and Drug Administration, which was harshly criticized for being slow in authorizing tests to detect the coronavirus, has taken a strikingly different approach to antibody tests, allowing more than 90 on the market without prior review, including some that are being marketed fraudulently and are of dubious quality, according to testing experts and the agency itself.

Antibody, or serological, tests are designed to identify people who may have overcome covid-19, including those who had no symptoms, and developed an immune response. They are not designed to detect active infections. Some officials tout the blood tests as a way to reopen the economy by identifying individuals who have developed immunity and can safely return to work. But many scientists, as well as the World Health Organization, say evidence is lacking that even high-quality antibody tests can prove someone has immunity to the novel coronavirus.

Now, the emergence of dozens of tests never reviewed by the FDA — many of which are being aggressively marketed — could confuse doctors, hospitals, employers and consumers clamoring for the products, according to critics who say the agency’s oversight has been lax. The questions are taking on special importance as federal and state officials debate various strategies, including using serological testing, to help determine when they can end state and local lockdowns.

“A test is only as good as its results,” said Kelly Wroblewski, director of infectious disease programs at the Association of Public Health Laboratories, which has been urging the FDA to take a close look at the unapproved antibody tests. “Having many inaccurate tests is worse than having no tests at all.”

Prodded by such concerns, the FDA recently has stepped up warnings and is joining other agencies, including the National Cancer Institute, to try to determine whether the unvetted tests actually work.

Growing up along the carcinogenic coast (Lake Charles, Louisiana to Texas City which is between Houston and Galveston), refineries are a way of life. It’s the lifeblood for the surrounding communities. So many of my Uncles and cousins are working for / retired from oil companies.

Things are dire with ominous predictions with oil expected to possibly climb to $10 per barrel by sometime in May. If the crash continues, we can expect massive layoffs as refineries reduce down to mothball operations......small to medium size refineries/oil companies may file for bankruptcy.

The trickle down impact for cities and counties who are so largely dependent on tax revenue for operating expenses will be greatly impacted.

We could experience a true depression!

Conspiracy theorists burn 5G towers claiming link to virus

LONDON (AP) — The CCTV footage from a Dutch business park shows a man in a black cap pouring the contents of a white container at the base of a cellular radio tower. Flames burst out as the man jogs back to his Toyota to flee into the evening.

You know what, fuck it, let the fucking virus kill us all. The human race doesn't deserve this planet.

Hey WTF? Dutchland is now suddenly part of London? Hell no! brexit conspiracy!!! Let's blame Woody Harrelson

It's been going on for the past week, about a dozen phone towers have been set on fire as well as some just over the border in Belgium, and in the UK. And what's the best part about it? We don't have 5G yet!!!!!!
And if you notice that it's been set on fire, you can't call the emergency services to report that the tower is on fire because the tower is on fire.

Anyway we do have some new measurements announced: all public events are suspended until 1 September, so including sport competitions, festivals etc. But kids in primary schools will soon be going to school. Nobody cares if they get sick, no that's not it. Kids have far littler chance of getting sick and spreading the virus.

Dutch organisation for cinemas has released a (draft) protocol that they could reopen with 70-75% less capacity. Imagine that, and then think about concert venues, festivals, theatres, bars, restaurants, fucking Las Vegas. It's impossible that they can survive economically in this 1.5meter distance economy.

Perhaps I should just stop reading the news in the morning

tw2113 04.23.2020 01:47 AM

Things hit close today when I was informed my personal gym trainer has tested positive. Thankfully, I also hadn't met with him since the 10th, so there's a solid window of distance.

I've also detected zero symptoms, including any sort of loss of smell, so I feel I'm likely safe all in all.

Once this is over, and we're all healthy, I'm going to need him to get myself relatively summer-body ready. :D

All things considered, I'm relatively stable in the 265lb range. Maybe a little bit lower depending on what I've eaten, but longer term I'm sure I'll creep back up. And that's okay. There's always in the future to return to form. Plus I'm hoping small nagging pains clear up in the meantime.

So you're, lessee, approximately 116.12kg? That's... I haven't stepped on a scale in ages, but I don't think I can be over 70kg (and 1.74m tall). NOT saying you're fat, mind you, just bigger. :)

incubation period can be as long as 14 days so you’re right on the cusp of the all clear, but some people are asymptomatic and still contagious, so you prolly need 28 full days before emerging. hard to know what to do without tests or reasonable guidance anymore. i said bye by to my trainer over 40 days ago.

Not only that: it's been reported (by serious media, with empirical data - you know, everything that's alright to hate these days) that some infected people who have come out of the other end as fine as possible have contracted the damn thing AGAIN.

They're making the same mistake they made in 2016 by broadcasting live and in full "the Monty Python version of the Nuremberg Rallies", as someone described them. And what ended up happening that time...?

No sooner do I post about that when today, The Shitshow becomes 25min, with a lot less bullshit!! Someone actually got to Trump? (I hear they told him his poll numbers are falling because of this.)
