I've seen Flaming Lips more than once. They were shit. Not quirky. Not funny. Not 'wacky'. Just plain shit. Not even 'Glice got annoyed by them, they must be good'. Just plain old shit like a million other bands.

ZEROpumpkins 10.06.2007 01:10 AM

Huh so apparently they also suck at the thing that makes 'em famous, eh?

Glice 10.06.2007 07:03 AM

Zaireeka was passable, the early stuff was shit. Mercury Rev I can tolerate, but more the latter stuff.

Actually, I think it's generally not true that the earlier stuff was better. Bleach is a really, really shit album. The Melvins sound like a shit Metallica on their earlier albums. The Melvins are a shit live band.

I could go on but I'm a little confused and hungover.

SynthethicalY 10.11.2007 12:13 AM

I don't really care for Madonna that much.

pbradley 10.11.2007 01:18 AM

I don't really pay much attention to Madonna's music but I do like that she's still around reinventing herself. There's something comforting to me to know that she is still recording.

Rob Instigator 10.11.2007 09:24 AM

the flaming lips bore the shit out of me.

automatic bzooty 06.15.2009 07:49 PM

boredom bump!

pet sounds is ... just not good. at all
ditto astral weeks.

the guitar solo in the velvets' "pale blue eyes" is the best ever.

xtc are the most annoying and obnoxious sounding band i can think of at the moment. most moments, actually.

the idea of le tigre is much, much better than the music of le tigre.

lou reed's "take no prisoners" live album is fucking awesome.

rocket to russia > ramones.

pbradley 06.15.2009 08:00 PM

Music is not important, which is what makes it enjoyable, revolutionary, and essentially human.

Sonic Youth 37 06.15.2009 08:03 PM

I don't like the Beatles (Some of John Lennon's solo stuff is good) or the Rolling Stones.
I hate The Clash's Sandinista! album completely.
I'm not a David Bowie fan
I'm not a Nirvana fan and never had a Nirvana phase like so many others did during the growing up during the 90s.
I like the Mars Volta (well, mostly the first EP and first 2 albums, I'll admit the new one is all kinds of suck) although I'll be the first to admit Omar comes off as being a pretentious asshat.
The only JaMC album that matters is Psychocandy.
I enjoy the VU with Nico more than without.
The New York Dolls drive me insane.
Goth rock gets an undeserved bad rap due to to all the overweight people in bondage gear. Anything with more than 2 straps, buckles, chains, or D-rings should only come in sizes Medium and below.
I like Death From Above 1979.
I like Chiodos.
I really don't like Tupac.

gualbert 06.15.2009 08:11 PM

I hate Nick Cave, I don't like the Beatles, the Beach Boys neither..the list is very long.

Trasher02 06.15.2009 08:38 PM

Here's my unpopular musical opinion: I love the beach boys.

I love the Beach Boys AND goth rock.

automatic bzooty 06.15.2009 09:00 PM

i lovelovelove the clash's debut and london calling, i like combat rock... but i hate give 'em enough rope and can't even be arsed with sandinista.

Sonic Youth 37 06.15.2009 09:01 PM

Give Em Enough Rope is amazing! The opening drums to "Tommy Gun" are one of my favorite Clash moments unlike the children covering "Career Opportunities", that's just a travesty.

automatic bzooty 06.15.2009 09:04 PM

well, i do adore the intro to "safe european home" ... that perfect drum crack, the guitars ... mm.

batreleaser 06.15.2009 09:22 PM

judas priest>iron maiden

david bowie's prodution on "raw power" isnt that bad

lo fidedlity always beats hi fidelity

Sonic Youth 37 06.15.2009 09:22 PM

A few more:
"I Melt With You" by Modern English is the best love song ever.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones is the saddest song ever.
Except for what he did with Cream, Eric Clapton can fuck off.
Machina II is one of the best Smashing Pumpkins albums
I also don't like Black Sabbath.

Satan 06.15.2009 09:22 PM

david bowie's production on raw power is perfect

the "remastered" version of it blows...it's just wrong

eric clapton can definitely fuck off. cream rocked though.

Everyneurotic 06.15.2009 11:24 PM

meh, can't bother that much with the difference.

i do dig my vinyl copy than the cd though.

clapton rocked harder with the yardbirds.

----
bleeding through used to be an ok metalcore band.

atsonicpark 06.15.2009 11:36 PM

10 years later, SlipKnot's self-titled album is still better than 99% of records that are held in high regard on this message board.

3 Dolla Bill Y'all$ is one of the best albums of all time, and in fact I enjoy the entire Limp Bizkit output to some extent (though the albums after 3 Dolla Bill Y'all$ are enjoyable only for entertainment purposes ... I mean, they're fuckin' terrible! ... but they are entertaining)

KoRn - Good God is one of the best songs ever written by any band ever.

Stephen Malkmus is annoying.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, but: Most guitar players sound better before they "know" how to play their instruments.

Hella suck. Their last few albums have sucked so bad that listening to their early stuff sucks now.

Black Dice SUCK. Their first few albums are good though. But their latest stuff is probably the worst stuff ever made.

KOENJIHYAKKEI should be one of the biggest bands in the world.

Most bands with extremely large discographies (Charalambides, Wolf Eyes), even bands I really like, really only have one or two GREAT albums in their entire discography...

All things considered, Harry Partch may be a more important musician than Mozart.

Deerhunter somehow make delay pedals sound boring.

Mindless Self Indulgence's "Tight" is one of the absolute most brilliant albums ever made. Too bad they suck now.

alteredcourse 06.16.2009 12:29 AM

I remember when TIGHT came out...I listened to it on the half-hour bus ride from the music store home. I was so into it I couldnt help but jerk around a bit and mouth the words.

.

id be very interested in hearing a more in depth explanation to this statement...

speaking of mozart- don giovanni is clearly a superior opera to la nozze di figaro.

and im sick of making rock, or noise rock, or whatever you call it. it has started to feel real pointless.
i think the two reasons are wagner and the fall. wagner unfortunately has made me realize the insignificance of everything. and the fall are the complete oposite- so utterly simple yet perfect that i cant comprehend how amazing they are...

not sure if thats an unpopular opinion. but i didnt feel like starting a new thread
and i hope in like a month or so ill get over it

atsonicpark 06.16.2009 12:42 AM

I'll have to post my arguments in due time. Right now I'm too sleepy.

atsonicpark 06.16.2009 12:44 AM

I will say that I grew very bored of making rock music. That's why I stopped doing www.myspace.com/RUINHORSE back in the day. I am at a point now where I don't even like guitar distortion. Actually, just in general, I've been bored with music for a while. Doesn't seem like it if you look at all the great albums I've listened to this year -- and certainly I have listened to tons of good music. But I almost feel bad, because even though I recognize the music is good, it doesn't really excite me. I haven't heard anything that exciting. The last band to really excite me was Make a Rising.

dionysusundone 06.16.2009 01:05 AM

Wait how can someone not like Darklands? That's one of my favorite albums ever! I even like it more than Psychocandy!

ZEROpumpkins 06.16.2009 01:46 AM

My opinion on JAMC is still the same.

Satan 06.16.2009 01:51 AM

i don't like:

polvo
sebadoh
slowdive

Unpopular opinion? Really? Because it does seem quite clear that Don Giovanni is a superior opera, and if Kierkegaard agrees, then the rest of the world really doesn't have any place disagreeing.

Awesome. We should make music together on the above proviso.

Shifty Prophet 06.16.2009 02:39 AM

Ok, if one is discussing what is unpopular within the context of say ''mainstream'' (I don't know of a better term) opinion, then the list is too exhaustive, BUT if we are talking about unpopular within the context of our respective local music realm or within our friends or persons of the same ilk, then:

1. Animal Collective as of late are at best fleetingly pleasurable
2. "Noise'' music is boring. Very little of it is decent and most can be overpowered by any mid sixties Jazz artist.
3. Quality is better than quantity in terms of rate of releases.
4. Less is more in terms of effects, etc...
5. Too little knowledge or appreciation for pioneering acts or artists

Maybe by words, but do you ever look at some of the releases from underground groups, especially in the noise circle. I mean c'mon, your really going to release 9 full lengths and several dozen cd-r's, most of which are shit, and could be easily reduced to say two full lengths.

I'm one for production through improvisation and experimentation but shit folks, make your relases count, keep your audience wanting more and please, less filler.

I agree entirely. Way too many bands just try to release way too much to show how "cool" and "innovative" they are. I'd rather hear complete, quality songs rather than a bunch of noise thrown together. Having a bunch of random experimental sounds in it doesn't necessarily make it good. They need structure and arrangement and most underground noise bands seem to not have that, just tons of random and weird song ideas and "experimental" tendencies. Some may like that, but not me.

Again, as already stated: Quality over quantity.... But then again I love Guided By Voices (And Robert Pollard), and they/he have approximately three million songs.

oh well.

Shifty Prophet 06.16.2009 03:26 AM

I know these are all opinions and all of us are entitled to our own, but SLOWDIVE? Like you said man, there is so much of a mystic nature to that group. Beauty indeed.

pbradley 06.16.2009 03:31 AM

I WIPE MY ASS WITH SLOWDIVE!

Shifty Prophet 06.16.2009 03:35 AM

You lucky bastard!

Same with me. Also, I've never really been interested in Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement (well, I did buy one of theirs, but it didn't really interest me) and probably most of those 1990s indie/alternative rock bands.

atsonicpark 06.16.2009 04:37 AM

Yeah, Dinosaur jr. suck.

Nirvana have a couple good songs.
