I probably would, but I wouldn't really be excited about it, Genetic.

Not really into remakes and shit like that, like, ever.

A.P.A, FUNERAL PROCESSION OF ROSES is in my top 20 favorite movies ever. Toshio Matsumoto is god. Have you seen his PHANTOM?

Probably my favorite thing ever!

7/10. Better than Videodrome.

Derek 04.06.2010 03:34 PM

Suuuuuuuure buddy.

TheFoxBen 04.06.2010 03:56 PM

I tell ya.

Derek 04.06.2010 04:15 PM

I dunno, I'd give Videodrome 10/10 and Scanners 5/10. Videodrome is one of my favourites.

TheFoxBen 04.06.2010 04:20 PM

Well, Videodrome didn't blew my mind at all... One of my least favorites by Cronenberg.

atsonicpark 04.06.2010 05:10 PM

Hah, what?

Sorry to join in with the you're-wrong-fest, but you really are so wrong. Scanners is second tier Cronenberg for me, which puts it below Rabid, Shivers, Crimes of the Future and Videodrome, but above The Fly (debatably) and a long way above anything he's done in the last ten years. It's about on a par with The Brood, Dead Ringers or The Dead Zone for me.

atsonicpark 04.06.2010 11:45 PM

Scanners is pretty boring, it's not even the best movie in the Scanners series for christ's sakes! (Scanners IV: Scanner Cop being the best)

The Fly is my favorite... I just have a different taste in Cronenberg movies I guess (also, I REALLY like his recent work).

Nope, this was first by him I saw. Have to check the Phantom, thanks.

Well, holy shit. That pretty much floored me. I need to ruminate a bit before I know what I really think, but DAMN, at the very least it was somehow unlike anything else I've seen before. I highly recommend you see it, but there's no way I'm going to be able to describe now in a way that wouldn't belittle it.

10/10. Probably.

Derek 04.07.2010 09:17 AM

I like everything Cronenberg has done recently. Interesting how The Dead Zone and Dead Ringers is second tier to you though demonrail... they are some of my favourites!

chicka 04.07.2010 10:22 AM

You want some real horror, check this out. True story left me speechless...

atsonicpark 04.07.2010 12:49 PM

^Yeah, I never want to watch that movie again.

Rob Instigator 04.07.2010 01:24 PM

I don;t know why people actively want to watch movies like that one (girl next door)
I find absolutely nothing to gain by being shown on film what happens every day, what I read in the papers and news sites. That movie seems more pointless, more like "horror porn" than any SAW or Hostel flick.

noisereductions 04.07.2010 01:34 PM

I refuse to watch GIRL NEXT DOOR just based on how many ppl I've known that were disgusted by it. I just feel like it's wrong.

I heard the Ellen Page version of the same story is done a lot better, and a lot less tortureporny.

chicka 04.07.2010 01:45 PM

In my case I had no clue. I had never read about the case. I don't watch the news, I don't read the newspaper. I just saw true story and I love to watch true stories. Once I started I was locked in by absolute brutality of the story.

I have hard time believing that anyone else can do a better job with the material. Yes it was disgusting but that's the way it happened no sugar coating no hollywood cuts to get a pg-13 rating.

noisereductions 04.07.2010 02:05 PM

I dont think the other movie was a PG13 family version man. I just think it was done without making you sick.

yeah, but what's the point?

if it is to be "educated" surely it can be done without such graphic and disturbing recreations (I hate watching rapes in films)
If it is to be scared, surely there was no need to make it feel like one was watching a true crime
if it is just to be entertained, then what does that say about someone who seeks their entertainment from such twisted shit? that is like entertainment for dahmer, ed gein, nightstalker, etc.

(none of this is aimed at you chicka, just questions I have about such movies

I hated straw dogs tooo

noisereductions 04.07.2010 02:27 PM

you said what I was trying to say Rob.

batreleaser 04.07.2010 02:58 PM

I love Cronenberg's films of the last 10 years. I'd rate "Crash" and "Eastern Promises" among his best. "Videodrome" still wins though.

Just re-watched "Brazil". Gilliam is overrated. I love "The Fisher King" though.

batreleaser 04.07.2010 02:59 PM

Anyone else hear they are doing a totally bogus lame remake of "Straw Dogs" with that fag James Marsters and the tall vamp from True Blood? Fuck that shit.

I probably ought to watch Dead Zone again, as it's years since I last saw it. Dead Ringers is probably my favourite from his post-fly era but I've not particularly liked anything after that. (Although I have to confess to not having seen all of his more recent output.) Shivers is still my favourite, and would probably make my ten all-time favourite horror films list.

Crimes of the Future was one of his earliest films, which doesn't get much mention now. It sometimes gets shown in the UK really late at night but hardly gets the same attention as what came later. It's recently been put out on DVD with his other (excellent) early film, Stereo.

I couldn't find a trailer or anything for CotF but here's a clip from Stereo:

Rob Instigator 04.07.2010 03:11 PM

Eastern Promises had the best fight seen I ever saw

noisereductions 04.07.2010 03:14 PM

Videodrome, Rabid, Shivers, The Fly and Dead Ringers are definite favorites of mine.

Scanners, eXistenZ, The Brood, Dead Zone, Crash are all good.

Spider was... okay. But I'm not thrilled with his work starting there.

Rob Instigator 04.07.2010 03:14 PM

as far as Gilliam

Fear & Loathing
Time Bandits
Baron Munchausen
Twelve Monkeys

Those are all excellent

atsonicpark 04.07.2010 06:50 PM

Brazil is the most overrated film of all time. Gilliam sucks ass. His only halfway decent film is 12 Monkeys, which is based on La Jatee anyway. Gilliam has not a single original idea.. all his films are too long, and are ALWAYS a huge mess, and usually unwatchable. And usually boring too.

Cronenbeg is probably the best mainstream director of our current generation. He hasn't made a single bad film, unless you count Fast Company.. which I don't. Hah.

batreleaser 04.07.2010 07:48 PM

Yeah, and the reason I love "The Fisher King" is mainly how fucking awesome and cool Jeff Briges is. Robin Williams dramatic highlight too.

batreleaser 04.07.2010 07:53 PM

And the best mainstream director, and best living American director, and maybe just the best director ever, is still Marty.

noisereductions 04.07.2010 08:25 PM

my favorite current directors are generally thought of as shit in one way or another... Tarantino, Craven, Roth, Zombie, etc. Fuck it though. I'm the coolest Me that I know.

Scorsese was probably the best director of his generation but I think he went off the boil a long time ago. I'd say that right now Michael Mann is probably my favourite filmmaker currently working in the mainstream - and the Coen Brothers are still always at least interesting. I don't think Scorsese has done much of any real worth probably since Casino. (Although I seem to be alone in really liking The Departed, even though I'll admit that it's not that great a movie.)

atsonicpark 04.08.2010 12:43 AM

Scorsese dropped the ball a LONG time ago. He hasn't made a decent film since Bringing Out the Dead (aka Ambulance Driver). Not really fond of that boring, dumbass Infernal Affairs remake with DiCraprio and Matt Damon, who both SUCK.

Coen Brothers are still great, though they have some absolute stinkers in their filmography. Still always interesting.

atsonicpark 04.08.2010 12:45 AM

news from home - 8/10

DanielCarlson 04.08.2010 05:06 AM

Lynch > Cronenberg.

I like Cronenberg, but I haven't seen any movie by him that I felt, you know, this is fantastic. Haven't seen Videodrome yet though. His last movies are all kinda boring.
