I've changed how I look at music over the past year, I like to think. I don't think it's really fair to say any band sucks, the most mature thing to do if you do not like a musician or a band is to accept that just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad. It's all a matter of perspective.
|
Well, I've always thought like that. I can recognize good qualities in every band. I still think some bands outright SUCK FUCKING ASS, though. I mean, I'm sure some serial killers have good qualities -- they still can go fuck off for all I care.
I'm just kidding. But you know what I mean. |
I dig to much british Nme indierock

1. Animal Collective is brilliant
2. Frank Zappa is great 3. I read Pitchfork every day bring it |
I don't think many people would disagree with those 3 nr.
I personally don't like Pitchfork, specifically their reviews, but their news section would be worth reading if they covered bands I cared for. I also think Animal Collective keeps getting more and more boring. And I am not a huge Zappa fan -- but he's definitely a genius. I actually love a few of his albums and 200 Motels quite a bit, I just think he has far too many albums I don't care for. JAZZ FROM HELL, WEASELS, and MONEY are all brilliant though. |
Pitchfork sucks but I read NME.
So where even. I agree at both other points(only AM new album is a let down) |
This is probably the best musical video ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T29Lqpi2RQ diamanda galas - double barrel prayer |
i have always thought Televison were overrated, or perhaps mis-rated. If I was going to rated them by relevance and influence then yes their rating would be more or less fair. BUT, if I were to rate them on actual musical creativity, dynamics, and excitement then it would be far lesser cry of genius.
I like em', some of the songs, well I love 'em but honestly, they tend to get boring rather quick. |

Pitchfork reviews do basically suck (or rather, I disagree with them a lot), but I still read them for some reason. But I read a lot of reviews (allmusic, prefix, allaboutjazz, etc). So whatever. The Pfork news section is so much better now that they moved the tour dates to its own section. I was so sick of the news constantly being "_________ starts tour today" I've been an AC fan for a long time, and it seems there's 2 kinds of us. Ther'es me who loves MPP and you that thinks it's boring. I hate Danse Manatee personally. But I appreciate what they were trying to do. I really think they're a great band though. And they always keep me excited to see what's next. Zappa is great, but yes there's albums I love and albums I don't. ONLY IN IT, SHIP ARRIVING, for instance I f'ing love. APOSTROPHE i think is kind of silly and stupid. But that's the chance you take when a discography is nearly 100 albums. Right? I'd rather have 100 albums to dig thru and make up my mind about than have a band that put out 3 geat albums and called it quits. That's just how I am. |
I don't like Television that much either, I never can listen to Marque Moon longer then 20 minutes.
I do like Richard Hell's later stuff(Blank genartion and the heartbreakers) way better. |
Count me as another non-Television fan, though some of the guitar interplay on Marquee Moon is amazing of course.
|
I personally love Television though I can see why some people don't like them. I think it's one of those hate the or love them bands.
|
I like the new Marilyn Manson album "The High End of Low"
|
-Combat Rock is a great album.
-I'm starting to enjoy De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, and Stakes Is High a lot more than 3 Feet High and Rising. -Days of Future Passed is fantastic and absolutely slaughters Sgt. Pepper's. The Moody Blues in general kick ass. |
Combat rock is just awsome, the clas on poptour is great and should Should I Stay Or Should I Go is a great catchy popsong
|
-I love Genesis
-I really do not like MOST british post-punk -I love The Fall, but I don't like early Fall |

Probably because they're all better albums. |

TINH - Which era of Genesis are you into? Selling England By The Pound or Invisible Touch?
|
joe strummer >>>>>> mick jones.
as far as clash songwriting goes. and i don't think that's unpopular, though. but, um, "guns of brixton" is better than most of joe 'n' mick's songs... |
i am not as interested in sy as i used to be. i like the solo and syr releases more now.
also i hate the clash. |

They're both great albums in their own way I think. Edit: And I'm not just saying that in a bid to have an 'unpopular musical opinion'. |
^^^I know that you're not trying to be 'ironic' or anything there.
I was having a chat with some friends about the good prog rock/bad prog rock question, and one of them pointed out that Yes (a band I think are very iffy) were one of Keith Levene's fave groups. And as much as I really don't like Emerson, Lake and Palmer (more a firm of solicitors than a band name), I do confess a liking for their "Fanfare For The Common Man". Oh dear. |
Led Zeppelin is boring, there I said it. And I can't fucking stand Robert Plant's voice, jesus I wish Bob Digi would do as I says, "and stick a long silver hook down your throat and snatch out your vocals" to that dude... sounds like a cat having sex with a really annoying chick.
and Bob Dylan, you have written some of the best songs I have ever heard, but you can neither sing them nor perform them even a small fraction as good as ANYONE else I have ever heard play a dylan tune. I literally believe that EVERYONE who performs dylan tunes does them better than dylan, myself included.. my favorite is Hendrix "Like a Rolling Stone" and the Dead "Its All Over Now Baby Blue (Jerry Bear version not Bob Weir-d) This website should help, it is all the dylan covers ever released.. proves my point like fucking algebra |
SuchFriends - Have you heard the version of "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" by Roger McGuinn? It's on the "Easy Rider" soundtrack, and very nice it is too.
As for the world of Metal, a lot of people are into Mastodon, but they are a band I just can't get into at all. I've seen them live, and they didn't really rock my world, I have to say. |
That reminds me, I'm not that huge on The Byrds' Dylan covers as most people are.
|

Agreed. |
This might seem crazy, but Animal Collective is sort of Pink Floyd-ish with their fanbase. Some fans/purists appreciate the early efforts more (like Syd-era Floyd) and loathe the expansive proggy trajectory they seem to be on now (post-Syd).

There's a lot of open space in Bob Dylan songs. The problem with most of the covers (and especially The Byrds ones) is that they have this need to fill that space up with too much music. So while Dylan is able to sort of drift around in his songs, it always sounds to me like the Byrds have placed a kind of musical grid over everything, locking things down into their particular place. The only band whose covers of Dylan I tend to like are those by The Band themselves - who co-wrote a lot of the ones they covered anyway. Their version of say 'Tears of Rage' has that same sort of drifting openness - although i do still prefer the versions they did with Dylan. |
I tend to think the better bits of Dylan's more recent work aren't covered as well as his earlier stuff. I can't imagine anyone else giving Lovesick or similar songs the same kind of raspy passion. I really like his voice, but I understand those that find it grating.

Strictly Peter Gabriel's Genesis. My favourite album is Trespass, nothing short of a masterpeice. |

I don't hate it, or even dislike it, but I massively prefer the Fall's more recent stuff. Theres just something about the general sound or production back then that sounds a bit thin. The Fall from the past 15 years for the most part has been abso-bloody-lutely everything cranked up to 11, no vocals that can be understood, they're a thick, sludgy, loud MONSTER of a band and I love it. Dragnet cannot compare to The Unutterable. |

Yes! Legions of yes! It's truth! Yes! Early stuff, good, yes, but latter stuff gooder, with some iffy patches. Yes. Yes yes yes. |
