I always tried to do some paintings while watching his show, god were they awful.

all those step-by-step drawing or painting guides make me nervous.. what's the use in doing the exact same thing as others do?

But I think at first you have to do the same exact thing as other, then after you get the hang of it, you start going your own way.

but then you develop someones style
why would you want that?
why not something you can call your own??

Bob Ross was just trying to help people. Give him a break. I watched him all the time as a kid, but when I paint now, it looks absolutely nothing like his stuff. I mean, I don't think I've ever even painted a landscape, hahaha.
