I don't think it's racist really. Saying "black people can't be emo" might be, or "there are no black emos anywhere ever"...that might be racist. This just sounds like curiosity.

I think we're too quick to call racism or homophobia. Why should color be such a big deal that we would yell at anyone who wants to ask a question? This kid is taking interest in a group he's unfamiliar with. That is one of the keys to STOPPING racism. If a person can look at a group of people and say "hey, they're people, just like me", then he has already won half the battle.

As an example, I love when people ask about my sexuality. When I can show them that I'm not so different from them, "bisexual" becomes just another sexuality, not some absolute definition (which is almost always influenced by stereotypes) of who I am.

Edit: Also, the OP lives in TX. That's my home state, and I have to say, there aren't very many black people at all out there. I had a few friends who were black, but most of them were refugees from Africa, and I met them through working as a janitor. Please consider that as well.
