atsonicpark 06.27.2010 12:25 PM

We've already had this discussion. The trailers look like shit -- it's easily the best mainstream movie I've seen this year. It's an awesome film -- kinda depressing actually..

atsonicpark 06.27.2010 12:29 PM

CRONENBERG (in my order):
1. videodrome - 10/10
2. dead zone - 9/10
3. dead ringers - 9/10
4. crash - 8/10
5. naked lunch - 8/10
6. a history of violence - 7/10
7. eastern promises - 7/10 (best fight scene ever!)
8. the fly - 7/10
9. shivers - 7/10
10. the brood - 7/10
11. scanners - 6/10
12. existenz - 6/10
13. m. butterfly - 6/10
14. spider - 6/10 (kind of a ripoff of Clean, Shaven ain't it?)
15. crimes of the future - 6/10
16. stereo - 5/10
17. rabid - 5/10
18. fast company - 4/10

They're all pretty interesting, except the last one.. if you're in the mood for 'em. I think Dead Zone ranks so highly because the atmosphere is incredible..

tw2113 06.27.2010 01:38 PM

I have a bunch of tv shows I need to hack away at before I really focus on movies. However, I did sneak in Nightmare on Elm Street 4 last night.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 06.27.2010 01:48 PM

Nice Duckman avatar, ASP!

Elm St. 4 is a good one, not quite NoES 3, but it's hard to compete with a masterpiece like The Dream Warriors. I once found an authentic poster for part 4 w/ a backlit frame and everything, at a flea market. But it was $40, and my pockets were nearly empty by the time I discovered it.

Also, I'm stunned that so many people seem to have liked A History of Violence. I thought it was pretty dumb. I enjoyed Spider, which I had rented at the same time, much more.

noisereductions 06.27.2010 02:43 PM

History Of Violence is pretty meh. Spider is better. I don't love either.

I thought eXistenZ was your least favourite?

noisereductions 06.27.2010 04:55 PM

WTF? Rabid is amazing.

Videodrome
Rabid
The Fly
Scanners
Shivers
Dead Ringers
eXistenZ
The Brood
Crash
Dead Zone
Spider
History Of Violence

TheFoxBen 06.27.2010 05:27 PM

Well, my ranking of the few Cronenberg movies that I've seen would be:

1. The Fly
2. A History of Violence
3. Eastern Promises
4. eXistenZ
5. Scanners
6. Crash
7. Videodrome

Oh and TheFoxBen, I think we've had this discussion before, but Videodrome last? It's one of the greatest movies ever made!

deflinus 06.27.2010 06:05 PM

this movie blew my mind. better than any artsy-fartsy shit out there.

just joking, it was really horrible.

I don't know. Watch it again? It's like Shivers only more perfected. Fucking great.

Yeah, I see that a lot of people love Videodrome here and I totally understand why but it really bored me when I watched it... James Woods was great in it though but I don't know, I should probably give it another try.

Yeah I'll get to rewatching it sometime soon. I did like how the setting was more vast than Shivers.

Yeah it did indeed take me a few watchings to really 'get' it. It's certainly one of the most resonating and trapped movie I've ever seen.

Oh, well I'll watch it again one of these days... Add to that that I saw it on TV and therefore, it was in French... Not that I don't enjoy movies when they are dubbed but it's just that original versions are always much better.

And for Kick-Ass: yeah, don't trust the trailer because at first, I thought it would suck but it didn't suck at all, it's a really fun movie.

tw2113 06.27.2010 08:50 PM

I decided to check out Toy Story 3 today. Was worth it.

atsonicpark 06.27.2010 09:44 PM

I liked Existenz a lot more after a few more viewings..

I liked Rabid a lot less after a few more viewings.

History of Violence is an excellent mainstream treat -- I thought it was playing with a lot of mainstream action film stereotypes as well as the loss of identity, I like how the main character turns bad.. thought it was brilliant. May be one of his most entertaining films also, though not his most thought-provoking..

I've watched all of his films 3 or 4 times, and some I've watched 10-15 times..

atsonicpark 06.28.2010 02:06 AM

the adjuster - 10/10

atsonicpark 06.28.2010 02:28 AM

started rewatching all the jon jost movies with my best friend recently, so I'm going to do a rating for all the ones I've seen...

Speaking Directly - 8/10
Angel City - 8/10
Last Chants for a Slow Dance - 8/10
Stagefright - 7/10 (bonus point for being the weirdest film I've ever seen!)
Chameleon - 7/10
Slow Moves - 9/10
Bell Diamond - 10/10
Plain Talk and Common Sense - 6/10
Rembrandt Laughing - 8/10
Sure Fire - 9/10
All the Vermeers of New York - 8/10
Frame-Up - 8/10
Bed You Sleep In - 10/10
London Brief - 6/10
6 Easy Pieces - 7/10
Homecoming - 9/10
Parable - 6/10

A self-taught filmmaking genius. BY FAR the best director of all time to get next to no notice by anyone, ever. Luckily, a few of his movies are in 1,001 Movies You Have to See Before You Die. I randomly found him while shopping at Family video, where I got Bed You Sleep In for $1. That was a year ago TODAY.

ni'k 06.28.2010 06:55 AM

THE END.

Rob Instigator 06.28.2010 10:26 AM

but that fight scene man....that shit was harsh. had my adrenaline and agent orange acting up

atsonicpark 06.28.2010 10:27 AM

I thought Eastern Promises was amazing, I saw it in theaters twice. Naomi Watts is always a pleasure to watch...

I am watching the MAXX.

noisereductions 06.28.2010 10:29 AM

I havent seen Eastern Promises yet. I love Naomi Watts though. But I've heard about this infamous fight scene. I'm scared of it.

Count Mecha 06.28.2010 10:55 AM

A couple of days ago my friend cut his foot open on a broken bottle so I hung out with him at his house where he couldn't go anywhere and his dad watches these horrible Syfy pictures. Saw these two slices of quality cinema:

Really pretty silly, dumb dialogue, moronic characters. The film literally moves on a scene by scene basis, like the characters forget what happened in the previous scene. It's like Lenny in Memento. And then the big 'huh?' ending, whatever. Doesn't make sense.

Ridiculous. Extremely hollow characters with typical IQs. For a bunch of high end executives, they were surprisingly all dead eye ducks. This one guy who gets impaled on on those Apocalypto wooden fly trap things still shoots all of these guys with Clint Eastwood precision from the hip, it's insane. Dumb plot advancement, a romance element that develops literally out of no where. But whatever, what can you expect. Oh, and it's got one of 'those' endings.

Oh and I think Eastern Promises is fairly lousy, but I will admit what's worth admitting, that the fight scene in it is incredible, vulnerable, quick, sharp, violent, fantastically well done, rest of it blows.

atsonicpark 06.28.2010 11:00 AM

Damn, that's the 3rd movie I know of called "Backwoods"..

atsonicpark 06.28.2010 11:07 AM

just got the 1966 batman tv series, will be delving into this soon..

Oh Julie newmar. you will always be the catwoman of my dreams

Ghostchase 06.28.2010 03:03 PM

The most repulsive and pointless movie I've seen in a long time. A hour and a half of hearing douche bag teenagers run their mouths.

2/10

One point for Chloë Sevigny looking absolutely fine and having character that was actually enjoyable. That short hair was looking fine on her.

Another point for the music. Thumbs up Lou.

Other than that, a waste of a movie.

Rob Instigator 06.28.2010 03:43 PM

the soundtrack is 100 times better than the movie

The picture didn't show up for me, are you talking about Kids? If so, that'd get a rare 0/10 from me. I HATE that fucking movie. I think it took so many things that indie films had done right for so long, smoothed the edges, made it "pop", and spit it out in a boring, trivial, shitty way. Larry Clark is an awful director. Korine is quite overrated, though he made the brilliant Julien Donkey Boy.

Ghostchase 06.28.2010 04:30 PM

That about sums it up. Boring, trivial, shitty. And Telly... MAYBE THE MOST FUCKING ANNOYING CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.

TheFoxBen 06.28.2010 05:57 PM

I thought Kids was amazing... Honestly, I've enjoyed every Larry Clark movie that I've seen. They sure seem to have no plot and are basically a sexfest but there's really something going on in his movies, I love the whole atmoshpere of his movies and Kids seemed to be a very realistic movie and I've always thought that it should be shown in schools, to prevent from AIDS, drugs, that kind of stuff. So yeah, that movie really struck me, in the same way Ken Park and Bully did (even though that one has some of the worst dialogues EVER). Also, I've discovered Larry Clark quite a long time ago (I must have been 14 or something when I saw Ken Park for the first time !) so maybe that's why I really enjoy his movies, they've always been indie classics to me.

Anyway, I've recently watched:

8/10. It is popular for being the French short movie that influenced Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys (which is probably my favorite Gilliam movie) and I thought that it was really good. It only comprises still photographs (except for one magnificent shot of a woman blinking her eyes) and it certainly looks way more apocalyptic and hopeless than 12 Monkeys. So yeah, any fan of the movie should watch this short, it's only 26 minutes long.

5/10. What an overrated movie ! I know it's supposed to be a parody of war movies and all but it's just so over the top and unfunny... Some lines are just ridiculous ! The only good things I can think of are the performance of Robert Downey Jr. (amazing and probably one of the few funny things of the whole movie) and Steve Coogan's character (too bad he's killed at the beginning of the movie, sorry for the spoiler but who cares anyway, this movie kinda blows). Also, Jack Black's character was awful and completely useless (and it comes from someone who usually loves Jack Black). So yeah, very disappointing, but I didn't enjoy Zoolander and Dodgeball that much either so I guess I probably don't like Ben Stiller... His best movie will always be The Cable Guy, which is great and underrated as hell.

me. 06.28.2010 06:59 PM

I watched La Jetee a while back, really great film, recently i watched Love Exposure.

Loving "Kids" and disliking "Tropic Thunder" seems ludicrous to me.
