Not really, although I like to think I am.

A man is quarter of the way through a tunnel. He hears a train behind him. If he runs straight ahead, he'll get out the other end of the tunnel just in time, and if he runs back to the start he'll get out just in time. The train is travelling at 20 miles per hour. How fast does the man run?

k-krack 08.29.2006 07:15 PM

sam- yes. yes i am.

HP- he could be running any speed, it really makes no difference, because the distance from him to the train is unspecified.

did you think you could trick me?!

Hip Priest 08.29.2006 07:16 PM

It does make a difference. All of the information is there, as they say. I guarantee you. No, it's not a trick.

Same question: A man is quarter of the way through a tunnel. He hears a train behind him. If he runs straight ahead, he'll get out the other end of the tunnel just in time, and if he runs back to the start he'll get out just in time. The train is travelling at 20 miles per hour. How fast does the man run?

k-krack 08.29.2006 07:20 PM

i suppose 20 miles per hour, because that way he maintains his lead on te train. but no one knows how far behind the train is, so i don't 100% understand.

am i right yet?

Pookie 08.29.2006 07:21 PM

100mph, just to be on the safe side.

What's the answer to Hip Priest's puzzle?

k-krack 08.29.2006 07:29 PM

whatever speed he so chooses!!!!!!! thats the answer!!!!!!!

why are you forsaking me!?

Hip Priest 08.29.2006 07:30 PM

I would never forsake you.

If the guy runs back to the start, he just makes it out in time. That means that if he runs a quarter the length of the tunnel, the train will be at the start. Therefore, if he runs a quarter of the length the other way, ie to the centre of the tunnel, then the train must also be at the start. So to get out the other end just in time the man must then cover half the length of the tunnel whilst the train covers the entire length ie he must run at exactly half of the speed that the train moves. He therefore runs at 10 miles per hour.

Organic foods: do you buy them?

k-krack 08.29.2006 07:34 PM
