Yeah man I think its just gonna fall out. I just have to make sure I know where it is.
The tremelo system is still awesome though.

before i buy a mascis jazzmaster

is it really that good? like honestly? or should i just cop out and put sparkles on one i already have?

MellySingsDoom 07.11.2008 01:51 AM

I'm a bit suspcious about "tribute" guitars in general...your JM is probably equally as good as the Mascis model soundwise, and as demonrail said earlier, once you bung a guitar through effects pedals, who can honestly tell the difference?

I say go for red sparkles, a la Bilinda.

EDIT: I make an exception on the "signature" gtrs front for max, whose guitar looks kick-ass.

i think i'll put silver sparkles on this one

ohhhh but what if it gets ruined???? :( :(

MellySingsDoom 07.11.2008 02:14 AM

Ohhh, what a lovely colour, C! Personally, I'd keep that as it is (sorry, all this mind changing must be annoying pour toi, eh?). Maybe when you're back home, get a cheap as chips Strat copy, and have a go at putting sparkles on that. That way, at least you'll find out what it would kinda look like on your guitar.

Cantankerous 07.11.2008 02:15 AM

it might work, i've lacquered roses i cut out from wallpaper onto an acoustic guitar before.

MellySingsDoom 07.11.2008 02:22 AM

I'm imagine that the acoustic would have looked v nice with the roses.

It has a really nice slick feel to it. You can probably try one out at your guitar store.
I'd reccomed it deffinitley.
Great playability

It's better than any other guitars that I have (you've seen the others). Though, it's not without it's issues. The CIJ trem is still a problem. The bar started falling out on mine the second day. And you might not like the neck, it's satin finished so it's not really slick. The body is basswood and has a nice weight and great sustain. The bridge is good once it's set up right (sound familiar?). The pickups aren't as mellow as a usual Jazzmaster, but they have a good sound and the gold guard is fantastic.

viewtiful_alan 07.11.2008 03:21 PM

I know.
I was so worried that guard would scratch because it looked so good.
But it doesn't!!!
I like it better than the regular jazzmaster's I've played. But yeah the termelo arm is a problem even if the termelo system is still amazing?

Sonic Youth 37 07.11.2008 03:44 PM

The gold anodized guard is amazing. My next jazz will be surf green/seafoam with gold gold like Thurston's because it's a damn fine combo. The trem is far and away better that a synch trem on a strat or floyd rose, the bar falling out is a nuisance but it fixable if you don't mind going "under the hood"

viewtiful_alan 07.11.2008 04:27 PM

Im a little paranoid to do so especially since that guitar was gift...

Sonic Youth 37 07.11.2008 04:48 PM

Oh, I understand completely. I was extremely wary taking the trem off mine (the ground wire is pressed between the trem plate and the body, not taped or glue or anything), I just had to weigh the options, my tape fix wasn't working and I had to have a properly working trem and no one around here knows how to work on Jazzmasters (the store I bought it from didn't even know what the bar looked like), so I was kind of forced to do it myself.

I just followed that.

I will say that if something else goes wrong with it I'll replace the whole assembly with a USA made one. I might just ahead and buy one off ebay to keep just in case.

MellySingsDoom 07.11.2008 06:30 PM

The Jaguar/Jazzmaster trem problem is a real bugbear, isn't it? I was very fortunate in that the guy who sold me his MIJ Jag modified the trem, so that it stays in place and in tune. I stick gauge 11 strings on mine, and in stays in tune a treat, as opposed to my Squier Strat, which seems to go out of tune every time I look at it.

viewtiful_alan 07.11.2008 06:42 PM

Mine stays in tune with really no problem.
I rarely have to re-tune it unless I bump the tuners or something.

Sonic Youth 37 07.11.2008 06:44 PM

Mine has 10s and the Adjust-o-matic bridge and it stays in tune fine. I had to retune today because I set up the tremlock a bit by tightening the spring. Now I've got the arm just where I want it, no more falling out, spinning or hitting the bottom of the cavity. The trem falling out/spinning around freely was the big problem. I couldn't stand it coming out after 3 or 4 bends or just falling out as I moved it to use it. I might go up to 11s when I have it set up after I decide what my other guitars are going to be tuned to. I'm thinking 2 in Standard is enough and 10s is my usual Standard gauge.

That's odd because both my Squier Teles stay in tune fine, one with 11s and the other with 10s. The Teisco is the real problem. I don't think it's ever been in tune, but the neck bolt sockets are worn out and I had to repair it, so I'm not surprised.
