In the mid to late '70s, there was a sudden interest in Swedish arts and culture in North America and the U.K. Hockey players like Roland Eriksson and Anders Hedberg became stars in the NHL; Bjorn Borg was the tennis star; you had the children's mini-series Den Vita Stenen (The White Stone), among others, going over big on the CBC and the BBC; etc., etc. Abba was the musical slice of that mini cultural invasion. A similar thing happened in the mid '60s with English arts and pop culture, and in the mid to late '80s with anything Aussie.

I just youtube'd that one. Sounds different than the ABBA from the hits indeed.

Thanks to Erasure and that bloody Bjorn Again thing, Abba have been increasingly ghettoised into this whole Gay thing. Very different to when I was growing up and it seemed as though every 2.4 children household had a copy of Arrival. It was as commonplace as finding white dogshit and wearing disco rollerskates back then. Now the media seem set on casting them as this Eurotrash camp thing, which wasn't the case at all, once.

Like Glice, I could never trust anyone that truly hated Abba. I'd say the same about the Bee Gees too. Forget 'Stayin' Alive', who could deny the ethereal splendour of something like 'How Deep is Your Love'. Pure sonic magic! Almost like a tone poem. Ditto Blondie's 'Heart of Glass' (still the greatest song created by humankind).

shut it, oldies!

I'm not so sure about that - I think maybe Abba are gay for my generation and those younger than me, but it's the most 'normal' thing imaginable for a lot of people. Still one of the biggest selling bands ever and stuff.

Additional to that, I hope that wasn't anything negative towards Erasure, because I won't have a bad word said about them. Oh no.
