Interestingly, while most instruments belong to a specific group (woodwind, brass, percussion etc) harmonica belongs to the group of instruments, largely unrelated, known as 'shit'.

*Edit - or, to give it its full name 'shit instruments that, no matter that there may be rare instances of them not sounding like shit, will always be shit'. In this group it is joined by the melodica.

you must have never heard any augustus pablo if you think the melodica is shit, and I have already posted regarding the success of the mississippi saxaphone so I take it you are not that into delta blues either?

Pablo's awesome, hence "or, to give it its full name 'shit instruments that, no matter that there may be rare instances of them not sounding like shit, will always be shit'. In this group it is joined by the melodica"

But as an instrument it's a bit ukelele if you ask me.

Oh, and incidentally, I have quite a few instruments in this category - ukelele, tin whistle, melodica, mouth organ etc.

I just got an alto saxophone for about $200. It's a lot of fun, and not that difficult to get a good sound out of it.

I did! I can play the harmonica like a motherfucker! I may or may not prove this later.

I have a harmonica, and I agree that it seems boring when it's played on its own, but if you can get a harmonica stand like Bob Dylan had and play guitar or something at the same time, it isn't as boring. I think the harmonica is meant to harmonise with other instruments, it's not a solo instrument like guitar or piano is.
