Rule #1 to reading a Sonic Youth interview or article: don't believe anything Thurston says. He's not "absent minded", he's the king of bullshit. I say that as a big fan who gets what he's up to. He still finds it amusing that people from Rolling Stone and the like would even ask him anything, and enjoys feeding them lines in his perfect deadpan to see what they'll print.

Given that the new album will be on an indie, of course he'd dis the major label. He knows PR better than Karl Rove. Thankfully, he's on our side.

Of course a new SY album will be promoted by Ecstatic Peace in some capacity, but it'd probably help to get the word out if SY was under the branch of another label for promotional purposes, amongst other things.

I think the worst business move they could possibly make would be to put it out on ecstatic peace. Thurston would have to start taking the label seriously for the first time ever then, right as they were touring. Ian MacKaye might be able to pull that shit off, but he's unique, and he didn't do it overnight either.

geffen at first was pushing SY very hard, and after a while they just seemed to fade in their support, kinda using SY as their boutique avant band, one that they can use to get other acts into geffen label,
I do not think that thurston meant the songs were compromised, or the music, but maybe everyhing that gpes with it, like touring where egeffen wanted them to tour, the packagingof albums, and the imagery. who knows?
geffen did not make any effort to promote SY's videos that is for sure.

ecstatic peace is a small operation, barely getting intern staffing recently. smells like is bigger, but steve is busy with his own stable and to have to add such a juggernaut as sonic youth could completely detract from teir other acts, which is something steve nor sonic youth ever seem to want to do. they are very fair about it
