I like some of the bands on Matador but it doesn't make like or dislike the company. I couldn't care less where SY signs as long as they get good distribution, artistic freedom and a fat check.

Good. Hopefully they do more experimental.

andrei 09.10.2008 03:44 AM

I think it's a good choice. Thay have a good distribution, i assume they won't interfare with the artistic freedom and i don't know about the check.
All i know is that the new Cat Power was easy to find in stores in my country and Rather Ripped was not!

ZEROpumpkins 09.10.2008 03:55 AM

Fuck yes, Matador is already my favourite non-electronica label, and now my favourite band are signed! Awesome stuff.

Warp is my favourite label of all time though.

listening NYCG&F on geffen, I can't think in sonic youth under a negative label influence about freedom :-)

Personally, I dislike most bands on Matador. They're the most popular independant label besides maybe Sub Pop, right? So, this isn't a big surprise. And it's not going to effect anything either way besides having the ugly-ass Matador logo on the back of their CD art.

it's nice trade off though..i'd rather have the matador logo on the back of a sy cd instead of a gigantic fbi anti-piracy logo...that's just me though

I couldn't agree more, Moshe.

how bout half songs half experimental tracks? Like Thurston's TOTA buth then with the experimental tracks worked out more. Mabey it's time for a true follow-up of ATL.

K Recs has long been my favorite... but the last couple years, meh. Nowadays most of the stuff they put out that I'm really into is 7"s.

Green_mind 09.10.2008 08:26 AM

Any new material will surely be good, it's nice to know in advance when it's planned to be available like this.

Everyneurotic 09.10.2008 10:15 AM

matador has awful bands too, you know?

if something gets on my tits is label worship.

atsonicpark 09.10.2008 10:55 AM

yep.

Most of the matador roster sucks.

Doesn't really make a difference what label SY signs to.. I'm just sayin'.

Rob Instigator 09.10.2008 11:20 AM

so matador has cat power, bardo pond, cornelius, guitar wolf, guided by voices, mission of burma, pavement, pussy galore, etc etc

plus al the bands they distribute (annd yes a liot of these are back catalogue but still good)

what's not to like?

Murray Street ("Rain on Tin", specifically; "Radical Adults" sounds more like Fun House :)) is closer to Television's extended, winding rave-ups. But Rather Ripped has a LOT of that concise and sheen (in the best sense of the word) power that's very prominent in both Marquee Moon and Adventure (and even in the third album).

Crazy!

I know I know, but Dylan's music is different. You cant argue that his music is easier to age with than theirs is.
They all seem active and fine though, I'm just kind of unsure why they only signed for one album.

Well... Harder to the average "elder listener", definitely. To the players, not really - it's not like they have to swing from chandeliers to record or perform it.

I'm with you here - I would like to know what's up with that also. Intrepid reporters will perhaps tell us...

noisereductions 09.10.2008 07:43 PM

I just thought of something awesome. Matador tends to put out 7" singles.
