Very serious. Can you elaborate as to why they sound similar, or why it's obvious for everyone who's into Sonic Youth to be automatically into MBV too? I'm not sure I get your point.

i don't think it's that crazy an idea for somebody to like sonic youth and not mbv, sy is a pretty well known/visible group and i don't think it would be strange for somebody to listen to them who usually likes folk or jazz or whateverthefuckelse and not automatically care that something is an "alternative classic"

ZeroAuthecre answer the question and don't go into hiding!

Exactly. Also, I don't hear any traces of Sonic Youth in MBV, plus they have a meagre body of work compared to them. And not that interesting in retrospect. I'm sure I'm not alone on this boat. |
Right. MBV are definitely at the bottom of the list as far as shoegaze bands go. I'd much rather listen to Lovesliescrushing (and related projects), Slowdive, Swervedriver, Fleeting Joys, Swirlies, etc...
And MBV don't sound anything like any era of SY. |

And I ain't even talk about neo-shoegaze bands who are almost all shit to me |
SYRFox is incapable of explaining why they are better than most, though.

Yeah, they're not better, they're just more popular. You could argue more "important" but I don't necassarily think pop songs with noisey production and a bunch of guitar layers was something MBV invented. I mean, the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Psychocandy" came out in 1985 -- though I don't think it's that great of a record and I don't really think of them when I think of shoegaze, they did stuff MBV did waaay before MBV. That's not even mentioning bands like Cocteau Twins (who are more dream pop to me but definitely layed down the foundation for MBV's sound... in 1979 or so!) or even Ride's "Nowhere" (which came out a year before Loveless).
Really, the best thing I can say about MBV, besides their harmony vocals on a few songs, is that LOVELESS has a great album cover. |

My brother listen almost EXCLUSIVELY (and when I say exclusively, it is) to shoegaze bands, so I have a pretty clear opinion about it. |
Ah.
"Touched". Like the song!! |

You could have written ''I Love MBV, Oh My God!' and spared yourself the above post, which isn't saying much. |

If you want a full detailed essay on why MBV is so good, there's already tons of writings everywhere for that |
dude, forget about the essays. If you say you disagree with something, you don't necessarily have to write 3 pages to explain why, that's all.

Okay

Porky style.

First time I listened to Loveless I wasn't that wild about it, but I listened to it on shitty headphones on a portable cd player.
Listen to that bitch on a good stereo. It's still growing on me, I have to admit, but I can really see the greatness. |

i like their early eps a whole lot. the rest of their stuff is okay.
i will say that "loveless" is a good album when only on shrooms. |
