There's a difference between cutesy happy music with an asian female singer and a noise rock band with an asian female singer.

Of course, that's why I said "1/4"!

I like CocoRosie

phoenix 05.08.2009 04:03 AM

I love cocorose with all my heart. despite words in this thread. Im used to that here now.

the beats and layering and lyrics are a big reason why I like them. funny what some hate, and some like... Her voice/singing style though, is similar to a lot of girl singers whom I love so.. I put her in the same box as vocalists from lamb, catatonia, lino, portishead, even bjork a little bit..

Torn Curtain 05.08.2009 07:03 AM

I second what Savage Clone said, they played one of the worst shows I've ever seen, they were just unbearable hipsters (and I initially dug a few of their songs before so I wasn't prejudiced against them).

Yes I'm still wondering what the f*** the hip-hop number number was about musically, it just seemed to be there so as to appear "décalé" and in.

It's interesting how women with dynamic voices come in for more criticism than men. Or do they? I can't think of many male voices that irritate people as much as, say, Bjork does a lot of people.

Rob Instigator 05.08.2009 09:18 AM

Bjork is irritating because I get tired of her SHTICK

Savage Clone 05.08.2009 09:20 AM

Bryan Ferry bugs me as much as any squeaky-voiced female vocalist ever could.
I like "dynamic" voices just fine. Diamanda Galas has a "dynamic" voice. So do a lot of the UK folk female vocalists I adore.

What I don't like are shrill, squeaky woman-child vocals that drip with affectation.
I do not like Bjork.
I do not like Kate Bush.
I do not like Tori Amos.
I might like Deerhoof if they had a different singer.
I do not like Joanna Newsom.
I do not like CocoRosie.

However, I could name any number of male vocalists who were the dealbreaker for their particular band or music.
This is also not really a comment on how musically talented any of these people are. I think Bjork and Joanna Newsom are both incredibly talented; I just do not want to hear the sound of their voices again in my lifetime if I can avoid it, that's all.

I meant that as... of course this forum would like Deerhoof way more than any actual jpop because the music is completely different. So I don't really understand why you're bringing up Deerhoof.

And if I'm not making sense then sorry, I've not slept.

All granted. I was more making a point about the capacity of the female voice to irritate more than a man's. I mean, I happen to think Ferry's an incredibly annoying singer, up there with Dylan/ Bowie/ all the Beatles in terms of 'voices that completely inhibit my enjoyment of the music'. Some days Reed and Sinatra annoy the hell out of me, but not always.

But the point is that if you put on, say, Harry Pussy, Sainkho Namchylak or Diamanda Galas on at the same time as the equivalent men (whose names escape me), chances are your average Joe [about whom I hate writing - terrifically vague] would hate the women's voices and just be passive to the men's.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the ability to play the harp is by no means the same thing as playing the harp well. She has a 'unique' (and limited) voice. Bjork, I think, has a much greater capacity as a songwriter, but I can understand her voice putting people off. Out of curiosity, what do you make of Kukl?

Bush I've no problem with; Amos is the Pumpkins for people I don't want to punch; Deerhoof are amoung the shittest things I've ever seen.

but then the average joe thinks music played by girls is for girls, and girls only.

Glice 05.08.2009 11:13 AM

Funnily enough, there's one Joe I know who is a total queer misogynist. And a bit of a cokehag/paeder.

It's nothing to do with the fact that they are female for me, because like it's been pointed out on this thread already, there are just as many male singers, if not more, whose voices make me want to eat rusty nails. CocoRosie aren't talented, and, to match, they have terrible voices.

I much prefer full on weird women than this pale, girly imitation of female otherness. They're on the same level as Avril Lavigne for me, attention seekers who would get frightened immediately if someone turned the lights off for real.

Green Magnesium 05.08.2009 02:27 PM

That's just it. I have no problem with "dynamic" unconventional voices as a rule. It's just a very case-by-case basis for me.

LOVE: Bjork, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Diamanda Galas, Portishead, Dinosaur, Deerhoof (although I was initially put-off by Satomi's voice)

HATE: Joanna Newsom, CocoRosie, Tori Amos, Animal Collective, Will Oldham... My big problem with these artists doesn't lie solely with the vocals; their music in general gets on my nerves. The fact that they all come off as highly forced and gimmicky to me doesn't help matters.

sarramkrop 05.08.2009 02:30 PM

Then again, Cerys Matthews has a voice that by rights I should find irritating, and instead I like it. I just haven't heard that many good songs she's been on.

Welsh stuff, linked above. Honestly, it's all about her in Welsh.
