Ok I just realized. What pisses me off is the MY FRIEND.
He finishes his sentences with MY FRIEND.

"This is truly appaling, my friend"
word -> sound -> power my friend

etc.

It is patronizing.
STOP WITH THE MY FRIEND and it'll be cool.

amerikangod 01.21.2010 09:41 PM

Arab deli owners say 'my friend' and 'boss' a lot. It makes you feel good about yourself. And maybe buy more stuff from them. And maybe be less inclined to shoot them.

knox 01.21.2010 09:44 PM

i imagine in that case they truly mean my friend. not "i dont care who the fuck you are i just wanna sound wise".

amerikangod 01.21.2010 09:48 PM

Nah, no one that runs a deli or bodega wants to be friends with the customers. They just want them not to steal or otherwise mess up the merchandise.

'My friend' is always a strategic connotation.

could you be any more silly?

Stop assuming everyone is being patronizing, can't you accept that some people out there are sincerely polite?

knox 01.22.2010 07:32 AM

No, my friend.

phoenix 01.22.2010 07:35 AM

so, where can I get these cards?

chicka 01.22.2010 11:31 AM

I tend to use the term my friend when talking to folks but it's usually after I've met them and talked to them a couple of times or did business at their place of business. Mainly because if I can buy it at the corner store and give the little guy the business instead of the big chains then I will and I encourage others to do the same. So since I've interacted with him or her why not address them as friend or by their given name if I know it or if they're wearing a "big tricked out name tag" (ie: Flo).....

Rob Instigator 01.22.2010 12:05 PM

suchfriendsaredangerous is my friend, my friend

knox 01.22.2010 12:19 PM

well, if you know their names you should use their names.
i personally only use "my friend" for patronizing purposes.
which would be completely ok if he was homeless.
i would kind of like it even.

Rob Instigator 01.22.2010 01:41 PM

I would rather have someone call me "my friend" than "fuckface"

knox 01.22.2010 01:51 PM

are those the two choices you get?

Rob Instigator 01.22.2010 01:57 PM

I get choices?

i stated my point. florida is not the 'south' . too many foreigners, not enough blacks. etc.
its too much of a melting pot. all the true southern states have pretty similar percentages of blacks and foreign-speaking peoples.

the most racist place i've ever been is australia.

my cousins up in ohio are way more racist than 90% of the people i know in the south, because their towns are so white, [2 black kids in their large public high school for example].

go to a public school in savannah and it's probably majority black or close to even, kids aren't growing up segregated here. my county was largely Obama, etc.

i really don't think you've lived here in the south suchfriends, and i really don't think you should make sweeping generalizations based on a few people who tell you stories about their neighbors.

please, don't project your porkchop from yo plate onto mine part-nah!
all people are my friends, because I genuinely seek to be kind and friendly with all folks, but especially those who have a disagreement with me, because we should be even friendlier to smooth things out..

I got no beef with you, and the 'my friend' was not condescending or patronizing in the least, it was honest and sincere.

what sweeping generalizations are those which I made? I did not in any place say ALL floridians are racist, nor all southerners. Why can't Florida be the South for 'positive' southern characteristics? Just because I chose to dwell on negative factors does not discredit the Southern status of Florida but regardless.. I am sorry, if cultural arguments won't stick with you, surely geography will, Florida is most definitely the southern most portion of the continental United States. Get over it, its the South! Further, as others have already pointed out, Florida was part of the confederacy. I am sorry brother, I did not write the history or geography books, I just read em ;)

amerikangod 01.22.2010 05:14 PM

Just for the record, 'more black' doesn't equate to less racist. And that works on both ends.... i.e. apartheid South Africa where the ruling minority was white, or simply that in a large black population you still get black people being racist as well.

i know. my whole point is that i would know, because i grew up here... its mostly older people who are still clinging to racism as far as my experience in the south. i have found my family that live in canada and ohio always more of an issue out of race than most people down here... its probably because they only see one or two black people a week. i know it doesn't necessarily mean they are 'racist' per se, but more aware of skin color i should say, as a means of being different

and suchfriends - it's not about geography. i'm done arguing with you because you seem to be missing the point, it was mostly a joke anyhow. but come to the actual 'south' and ask people here if they consider florida a 'southern' state. notice the quotations, meaning partly a joke, and referring to the fact that i am not talking about geography. this is my last reply on this topic towards you, because sonofabitch, i can't make this any more clear.

Rob Instigator 01.22.2010 06:12 PM

the most outwardly racist place I have ever visited is Boston Massachusetts.

amerikangod 01.22.2010 11:52 PM

Yeah, the best cure for racism is old racists dying out. And interracial porn.

I don't need to smooth things out.

You don't need to act so benevolent and friendly and non-judgemental, this isn't nickelodeon or something.

The fact that I get angry at things people say does not mean I dislike them or can't be friends with them.

I just don't feel like acting like a carebear the whole time. It feels more honest that way.
