one more detail to add to this, the rich guy's name is "tenoch" (an aztec name), which plays a role in the movie, cos all the real indians are living in misery while he (literally, no?) jerks off in the pool.
there's a lot of subtext in the movie which is i think what makes it great. the mommy fucking is only a conceit, in a way... |
Oh yeah, that makes me think of how it was for my mom growing up. She is a native indian from Mexico.

the girl at the end goes to die among the indians who are it appears the only decent people in the whole movie. years later though (the narrator tells us) tourism invades the area. really a lot of layers there-- maybe watch it again, he he he. if you can get the spanish because subtitles often leave out a lot. |
Oh I understand the spanish.

^^ eww, that's correct, correct, correct! 300 was a fucking disaster.
|
Most blockbusters that come out these days are overrated.
Enough said. |
The thing is, movies like records are pretty much personal choices. All the ones that i've listed don't tell me much about anything, but that doesn't mean that i think that some of them are bad movies per se.

the first film i thought of when i saw this thread was the da vinci code.
|
the da vinci code wasnt rated highly it was a bomb.. this seems to be a thread more about what movies you like than over rated movies.
|
Robert Rodriguez's "Desperado" - me and demonrail666 went to see this the week it came out in the UK, and we both fell asleep through it. Afterwards, we were wondering whether we saw the same film that the critics saw, such was their pants-wetting enthusiasm for it.
|
haha waterworld!
|
the new star wars films, plus the re re re re re re issues of the originals.
|
Quote:
agree |
waterworld isnt highly rated either
it has a 5.5 on IMDB desperado has a 6.5 and da vinci code has a 6.5 the same as desperado these films arnt over-rated..noone likes them that much for them to be over-rated. |
Quote:
ow, poor guy, i am sorry, yes, you were conned. desperado was a hollywood-style remake of his wonderful "el mariachi" which is a fun fun fun little movie made with little money. if you haven't seen it, check it out, it's nothing "deep" but it's a good show of what you can do with little dinero and lots of resourcefulness. i think desperado suffered from many problems, mainly cheesiness, sure-- but also rodriguez famously had troubles working in a studio because he was accustomed to doing everything pretty much by himself. having a large crew and millions of dolars actually worked against him. he adapted later, but he also eventually built his own studio in texas where he's made things like sin city & so on. he is a fun action movie guy; not my favorite director, but he has a talent for certain things. desperado was just ridiculous and unwatchable. Quote:
that's rated too high! they should have a rating of 1.1 or about. |
catwomen is rated a 3.2...in comparison to catwoman these other films are rated pretty fairly.
|
Quote:
yes but light sleeper is rated at 6.7 so in comparison to that the da vinci cack is rated too high. |
or you can add light sleeper to the under rated movie list
|
Forrest Gump
Loved by many, but not by me. |
Quote:
eeeeew that movie is the most disgusting turd every shat by hollywood. i mean truly repugnant. a tear squeezing machine, bestial and foul. a pox upon it!! |
Exactly.
|
I watched 'Lost In Translation' last night and it wasn't that great. I should have just stopped it when they smile at each other in the elevator and put on Psychocandy.
|
On the trash film front, can I nominate "Bloodsucking Freaks?" A truly wretched piece of film-making, it made me want to throw my TV out of the window in despair.
!@#$%! - Thank you for understanding my pain re "Desperado". vbmenu_register("postmenu_342152", true); |

i don't know if these were already mentioned but:
*all three godfather movies *star fucking wars *every adam sandler movie except airheads, billy madison, happy gilmore and the wedding singer...maybe little nicky too. *lost in translation *sin city |
Quote:
Seriously? I always loved that. But then again you don't like Flaming Creatures or Lucifer Rising, so... |
Quote:
eh, brother, while i bow to you knowledge of musical things, i believe you're the victim of several misconceptions here: 1) how can you lump together "all three godfather movies"? 1&2 are a world apart. it's like saying that "daydream nation and rather ripped are meh". godfather 1 & 2 are true masterpieces of film. you can't dispute that with any seriousness. godfather 3, you can shit on it all you want as far as i'm concerned. i think it's better than it's been given credit for, yes, and so it is underrated in my eyes, but it's in no way up to part with the 1st two. 2) "every adam sandler movie EXCEPT..."? well i don't know if there are exceptions. happy gilmore is barely above forrest gump. my problem w/ adam sandler movies is that he's ALWAYS the same goddamn character-- the good guy who's oh just one of the guys, you know, a regular dude, who is good natured, and maybe a little dense, but so nice, well, he always triumphs. gack. i haven't seen a couple of them but i can tell you wholeheartedly happy gilmore is forgettable pap. 3) lost in translation is a beautiful movie. maybe you watched it on a small tv or something. crap all you want on marie antoinette but hands off lost in translation. how is this movie overrated? please explain. sin city, i liked it, maybe you think people make too much fuzz about it, ok. i have no strong loyalties to this film. |
Couldn't agree more about The Godfather. 1 and 2, any; the 3rd one being a bit of a sequel too many
|
"Punch-Drunk Love" is a good Adam Sandler movie. His early comedies like "Happy Gilmore" are OK, nothing special.
|
Midnight Cowboy.
I loathe every character in that movie. I can't even feel any empathy for their pitiful existence because they are so goddamned stoopid. |

same thing happened to me w/ monster. damn, i saw it yesterday. i really have a hard time empathizing w/ rednecks. |
Can't believe this one wasn't mentioned already, but then again, it's sort of a given anyways, but Titanic.
|
The Science Of Sleep = a date movie for hipster types who don't want to look at Hugh Grant or Drew Barrymore.

the director's cut is a lot better than the original, as i lacks the overbearing narrator's voice over & adds a couple of important scenes (oh, and cuts the happy ending). |
