it's a record store, it's basically a country club for the scruffy and nerdy set.

come to think of it, call it "country club records" your slogan could be "chances are you won't belong here"

im sure hope gmku wont run such a twatty operation, having been a victim of unkind clerks himself

Everyneurotic 04.26.2007 07:42 PM

i was just kidding, playing with the whole stereotypical record store types.

i can imagine gmku being a papa smurf kinda record store owner "say kids, did i hear you talk about the velvet underground? let me tell you about them..."

there's pretty much no indie record stores here in mexico, and the ones i have gone to have been in new york, i have come across that attitude very few times, mostly i end up talking about what i'm buying.

Can't help you with the record stores over there. The only thing the Carolinas have on Oregon is the beaches, so I hope you're going to be on the coast.

Exactly. I'll be the kinder, gentler record store owner. And for the record... Hey! For the Record! ... meh, maybe... Anyway, I don't mean to give the impression that this will be a moldy LP store. I'm definitely not going the flea market route with the LPs. My main focus will be on new (sealed) LPs, both reissues and new releases, and on new and reissued CDs. So Lps and CDs. I can imagine that selling used LPs would be problematic. I'd have to be careful about vinyl quality and all that. And there's the matter of how I procure them--I'm sure not going to sell my own LPs. So at least to start, the focus will be on new merchandise--vinyl and digital.

gmku 04.27.2007 12:17 PM

gmku 04.27.2007 02:45 PM

You know what's cool? My wife is 100 percent behind me on this. Almost more excited than I am. Even if this doesn't come to fruitition and I just end up working in a 7-11, at least I'll be satisfied knowing I've/we've done everything we could to check it out.

the imac's been around longer for 5 years, so even if a new version comes out, it'll likely still be called an ipod.

I think you know what I mean. I'm not saying that no one will be using iPods in 5 years, but you never know what the Next Big Thing is going to be, so it's best to choose a name that sort of defies trends. Oh, and that doesn't use the abbreviation "Yr" either.

Style 04.28.2007 12:23 AM

yeah actually i found your point to be quite valid, i was bored, and only posted after i decided to incite a response.

atari 2600 04.28.2007 12:25 AM

some used vinyls sell for a small fortune so it's not a bad idea to have some choice ones. last year i was @ the record store in the bowery i forget the name, and while i was there this guy came in & within 120 seconds he bought an original pressing of no new york for $100 (i had been looking at it but didn't have the funds. the bastard!).

you could sell flea market vinyl for $1 a piece; in a "bargains" rack. one of the big attractions for people who first get into vinyl is the ability to get good music for a buck or a quarter. once you get them into the store, you can turn them on to the rest of your selection. do not underestimate the power of cheap merchandise to attract customers. (especially with such a specialize niche, i think).

instead of mp3 players, sell some record players. including USB record players that let you record to straight to computer... some basic audio-technicas start at $100.

this weekend i was in a record store that sells vinyl no longer, but they had a YES vinyl set for $37. forget the name, it's not yessongs, but it looks like that. yellow cover. i don't buy there because they sell CDs only and i avoid doing that whenever i can. but a) i'm the exception, b) when SACD takes hold, vinyl will lose its advantage in the sound quality (though some people say this is nothing but a placebo effect).

oh, i noticed they have a little couch & armchair & coffee table & people were sitting there.

gmku 04.29.2007 05:58 PM

Great advice, !... .!.

I've been paying more attention to how Record Collector is set up, and they have much of what you mention--the $1 vinyl (I just never paid attention to it before) in a section marked Buyer Beware, of all things; the occasional refurbished and new turntables. They don't have a lounge area, mostly b/c they're pretty limited for space. They also sell tickets to local shows, stock a few freebie zines and audio extras like record cleaner, styluses, cartridges, and the like.
