I hate this record because now I can hardly stand the sound of the older ones.

Everyneurotic 06.12.2007 03:41 PM

eig made me dig out my shellac albums, it's pretty much all i have been listening for the past week.

Same here, it made me listen to almost everything I have (lives and 7" rips included), but I find it difficult to deal with the sound of older things up until 1000hurts (too much "reverb" even there :D:rolleyes:).

PAULYBEE2656 06.12.2007 04:17 PM

got my actual bought with money album and i was right the packaging is damn cool.........

Everyneurotic 06.12.2007 04:21 PM

actually, i like how each album is produced, the sound itself is part of the charm in each case.

the only one that needs anything is at action park, which needs to be remastered as the volume is too low for it.

PAULYBEE2656 06.12.2007 04:24 PM

in total agreement with the reduxing of at action park............

Yeah, I still love all of them deep in my heart, actually, and probably this is just a temporary mental block due to the love for EIG's sound... I hope so.

Bollocks_to_Pop 06.13.2007 01:31 PM

I have their first couple of singles and I wanted to digitize them so I can listen to them other places than home. Do any of you know how I might be able to do this? I have audio editing software on my computer by the way. Is there some place I could get digital versions of those songs?

gmku 06.13.2007 01:59 PM

Would you call me an idiot if I admitted I knew nothing of Shellac until about 2 weeks ago? I don't have the new one, but I picked up At Action Park on vinyl. Touch & Go did such a nice job with this thing, from the package to the vinyl to the mastering. Oh, and the band's pretty good, too.

dude, my editor is a huge big black fan and yesterday, i blew his mind when i told him steve albini formed a band after that and that he's still playing in a band.

gmku 06.13.2007 02:39 PM

How does the new one compare to At Action Park?

Everyneurotic 06.13.2007 02:42 PM

it's much cleaner, calmer and a little more focused on the vocals.

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 01:41 AM

damn if they did an at action park reissue.. jesus.

i remember getting at action park.. i was playing in RUINHORSE, so this was 6 years ago.. we were basically a big black/sonic youth tribute band... and i remember reading a little about rapeman and thinking it sounded amazing but then hearing about shellac.. so i downloaded "idea of north" on napster or winmx or whatever it was back then.. and was like "holy shit i love this!" and then found at action park at a skate shop a few weeks later... couldn't believe it was in there, not like the cd selection was huge or anything... it was all like skate punk bands, bones brigade and all that shit but there was the lil' cardboard cd that said SHELLAC. AT ACTION PARK. and i was like "fuck it it's $10 i'll take a chance."

and i remember listening to it like 3 or 4 times.. i wasn't familiar with "math rock" or anything like that at the time (though calling shellac "math rock" can be considered questionable, for the sake of this story let's leave that term in here), so i was mostly just amazed how different this sounded than anything i'd ever heard before.. yeah, it was still screamin' geeky steve albini, but this seemed so much more.. refined. and i was wondering why not every song sounded like idea of north, haha.. then i realized that every song was actually really really different. and all were important and powerful in their own weird way.

it sounded like nothing i'd ever heard. and honestly, i can't think of many bands i've heard since then that sound like shellac. you'll hear minimalist power trios with math parts, but.. shellac just really have it going on when it comes to inventive song structures and making the discordant seem normal. they're not as complex or as noisey as they are usually thought to be, they're just really really smart, tight, and unique. if only all bands could be like that.

then, i bought terraform and downloaded all the singles and then i got a chance to see them a few months later at rhinos in bloomington.. i bought 1000 hurts on vinyl and got the cd with it. and then there was no shellac activity (except some live shows but none around here!) for years... and this album dropped and .. i haven't listened to it as much as i would like to but it's still amazing.

and i totally agree.. at action park sounds fantastic, the volume's just too low. i don't see any problem with the way any of their records sound, though i'm going to have to give a nod to terraform as the one that sounds the best.

PAULYBEE2656 06.14.2007 09:37 AM

and the vinyl of action park weighs a fucking ton!

king_buzzo 06.14.2007 09:38 AM

Fuck you guys, I want a bloody turntable (or at least one that works)

gmku 06.14.2007 10:14 AM

Yes, apparently they did just reissue At Action Park on vinyl. Mine's a brand new copy. And yeah, it weighs if not a ton then at least like as much as stoneware dinner plate.

gmku 06.14.2007 10:15 AM

I like Shellac on Action, though I'd still give the edge to Big Black's Songs about the F-word-gerund.

Bollocks_to_Pop 06.14.2007 10:20 AM

Funny I never liked songs about fin. It always seemed to me that it was Big Black trying to act and be like Big Black on that record instead of just being Big Black. I liked Atomizer and Racer X much better.

PAULYBEE2656 06.14.2007 10:44 AM

atomizer is a much finer album than songs about fucking i reckon. for one it has kerosene on it, an almighty fist fuck of a song.....

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 10:45 AM

i remember when i bought songs about fucking... my mom was with me, and i didn't want to say the name of the album to the dude behind the counter.. this was forever ago.. i was a sophomore in high school i guess... i say fuck all the time around my mom now but fuck.. anyway, i went "yeah i want to order a big black cd... i can't pronounce the title..." and he looked through the list and he went, "oh, songs about... humping?" i was like, "Yeah!" it was lame.

PAULYBEE2656 06.14.2007 10:49 AM

nice avatar change adam....
thats on my list of purchases.............

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 10:57 AM

speaking of kerosene, anyone ever heard pitchshifter's cover? it's painful.

speaking of covers, anyone ever heard my cover of "passing complexion"? it's not very good... but it's doable. it's near the bottom of http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/scissorshock.htm off of the album the kids were filled with candy delicious so we ate them.

also, a HUGE (705mb) torrent of big black rarities: http://www.mininova.org/tor/217415

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 10:58 AM

thank you.

you can get it off of amazon for like a dollar...

PAULYBEE2656 06.14.2007 11:04 AM

cool, ill check it out.....

an irish band called kerbdog once did cover of kerosene and the ruts in a rut for a single. it was ok but they played it at double speed so it was over in about 2 minutes...

speaking of remastered albini. the big black catalog could do with a remastering, all the volume on all the cds especially on atomizer (rich mans 8 track) and fucking are ridiculously low....

theworst volume level on an album tho is trumans waters milktrain to paydirt. its mastered at about a third volume. to hearit properly you have to spinal tap it (turn it up to eleven)

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 11:09 AM

yeah that trumans water release is really quiet... even more quiet is the old version of that bastro cd, sing the trouble beast or since the troubled beast or whatever it's called sicne i don't feel like looking...

i actually bought two nuns and a pack mule and it was too quiet so i ripped it to my computer and turned the volume up on it in the computer and burnt another cd copy of it.. i also did that with drive like jehu yank crime... also, this way, i can have one copy to listen to and wear out and a collectable copy ;)

PAULYBEE2656 06.14.2007 11:32 AM

yeah actually, thats another one for the reduxing... yank crime. havent listened to that in ages.. reaches for it to put in the car!!!

do you compute, its aural art!

nicfit 06.14.2007 11:36 AM

Live in Tokyo Japan-only live CD (1994, NUX Organization)

is this one considered an "Official" release? Or sharable? FLAc sharable? able. ble . le . e.
AND; does anybody have "Killers" recorded for this The Lounge Ax Defense & Relocation Compact Disk compilation CD (1996, Touch and Go Records) , not live?

Everyneurotic 06.14.2007 01:46 PM

last time i heard yank crime i wondered why i had liked the first place, it sounded too samey and the only song i liked was 'bullet train to vegas' since the production is different since it's not really on the album. but then i heard it yesterday and i was really amazed by it again.

my first brush with albini's music was when i downloaded the power of independent trucking; for some reason, i never gave him a chance until the 2000's.

Iain 06.14.2007 02:26 PM

At Action Park and the Rapeman record sound fine to me...on vinyl at least. Maybe Albini made the cd sound shitty on purpose. In fact, At Action Park sounds MASSIVE. Also, was it even re-issued or just never out of print?

Yeah, I had to ennunicate carefully not too long ago when I asked a clerk for "Cunning Stunts."

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 11:13 PM

yank crime is great. one of the only cd's i've bought on reccomendations without hearing a single song. strangely, i bought it at a pawn shop for $3, when at the time it was going for about $75-100 on ebay/amazon. oop, you see. it was the interscope radio promo version even. loved it loved it lovedi t. bought it the same day as loveless and the queen is dead, at the same pawn shop (also, this pawn shop had a raincoats cd which was worth a lot but i never bought it and it had flipper - generic, which i sold a few years ago for $40 :))... anywho, yank crime is amazing. drive like jehu didn't have a bad song. and it was reissued, paulybee, with bullet train to vegas and the amazing hand over fist. anyone ever heard the band bullet train to vegas? they sound like the blood brothers with better riffs and some fucking POP parts. still gay though. for an example of what blood brothers would sound like if they were good, peep the ultra dolphins.

anyway, yank crime, one of my all time favs, though i strangely prefer the simpler, less noisey hot snakes. odd, considering every hot snakes riff is basically just ripping off the wipers but whatever.

this thread is fucking EPIC.
