I read recently one of the first bands Kayo Dot toured with between Choirs and Dowsing was Cerberus Shoal... First of all, that would've been the best shows ever, and second of all, I can definitely see a distinct Cerberus influence in some of Kayo's stuff that I'd never thought of before. Weeeird.
|
Speaking of which, I just got the FINAL EVER Cerberus Shoal recording, TAILOR OF GRAVES/HYMN 7 inch. This is the first thing they've released in 5 years. Of course, it was recorded 5 years ago, too..
|
Hahahaha intense.
|
Pretty insane to think the director of the Scooby Doo movie wrote Troma movies -- whose best friend is Belladonna -- is now dating a member of Kayo Dot. Weird pseudo celebs and shit..
|
Yeah he wrote Tromeo and Juliet and stuff I think.
I'm just saddened that she'll never be mine : ( |
He also used to be married to the hot chick from The Office. What the hell? That dude must have some serious game.
|
Yeah. Weird..
|
![]() I can't wait to hear the new EP. I'm quivering in my avant-garde boots. |

ad-Dim and Derek's Fantastic Kayo Dot Thread Great JOB!!
|
Don't reduce us and the almighty Kayo Dot to some bastardized Tim and Eric title!
|
True dat. Tim and Eric is possibly the worst show ever made. By the way, that PERSON WE WERE TALKING ABOUT ON SLSK yesterday, you know.. the real smart "cool" "intellectual" art house facebook friends girlfrien adding type dude? his favorite show of all time is Tim and Eric.
I reccomend Xavier to him once and he said he watched half an episode and said "it was just aguy walkin around a store for 30 minutes, it sucked." Ah, the brilliant minds of this world. Anyway, Kayo Dot is godlike -- I was heavily listening to the first 2 albums while writing PSYCHIC EXISTENTIALISM... |
Every Tim and Eric fan I know is usually also a Family Guy fan. Hm, coincidence?
|
Weird interview with Mia:

hah.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() why are pictures of mia so funnnnn btw, that sheet music is weird. dude has long fingers. |
Anyway, I'm on a big Kayo kick again. COYOTE finally is starting to make sense. I am hugely inspired by Kayo.
![]() Did you ever listen to Thinking Plague, Derek? Some of their stuff seems like an early prototype of Kayo Dot. I like how this thread is just me and you talking. ![]() BTW, one time I was on last.fm and toby was talking to his fans on the kayo shoutbox. Cool dude! ![]() Uh, wow, remember when they had a thousand members? This looks like a broken social scene group picture or something, haha. Why did all those people quit? |

In 2006, near the end of the fall tour, four members – playing guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet – left the band for personal reasons. This is a quote from Wikipedia, but I remember reading something that Toby said about how the departure of several band members made him realise that he was perhaps being kind of a "control freak". But yeah, he seems to be quite a nice guy, judging from the way he addressed the crowd when I saw Kayo Dot live. Also, Quote:
I tell you, man, since I read that on a Rock-A-Rolla article about Coyote, I get shivers right from the album's first two verses - Help me / I'm disappearing. Knowing the background that led to those words really gives a whole new meaning to it. |
James Gunn! That's crazy. Did Anyone see LolliLove?
Interesting stuff. They can hold my attention much better than some other experimental groups I've heard. And the super short and foxy Asian lady doesn't hurt |
Yeah, Lollilove is cool! Fun mockumentary. Glad they kept it short.
|
Stained Glass EP is out there on the internet and I don't have a computer right now to obtain it. Bummer.
|
well, Stained Glass EP is weird. weirdest thing they've done. derek, you know in scissor shock songs, how it'll get to those really odd ambient parts? this album sounds just like that! no shit! like the ambient parts on the 2 title tracks from my last album -- that's this album! no kidding.. it has that same type of "ambient but not really" unsettling thing going on with lots and lots of layers of hard to discern sounds, with quiet subdued droney layers constantly going while things on top are swirling around and bleeping. there's also parts -- mainly in the guitar -- that sound like uuuuuu. i'm not even joking. similiar tone.
It's going to take like 10 lsitens to reallly get into this one, but its certainly.. neat. |
You're making me wet my pants in anticipation.
|
I'm not kidding, you'll start laughing when you hear this new ep, when you envision what I mean.. it's as if you and I collaborated and Toby Driver just happened to be there, too! The first 2 minutes has all this xylophone and some weird distorted sounds.. the whole thing really has a completely new view on production. It really sounds like ASTRAL TRAVELS era uuuuuuu meets HOLE IN THE HEAD OF GOD era ss with some stuff from my last album, haha! It's killing me.
There's this weird ass keyboard going through some of it too. It's honestly one of my favorite things they've done, the drums are so ridiculous.. they're just barely being played for some of it. At about 3:42, it goes into this distorted-as-hell prog-rock riff and then all these bells and strings come in. There was a choir a few minutes ago. It sounds like a soundtrack to Christmas or something. |
![]() I'm listening to Tartar Lamb now. Amazing. That new Kayo Dot ep is the best thing they've done since Dowsing, btw. It's also a huge inspiration on me and the stuff I want to do on my next album! |
|
Poor Kayo, they deserve the funds that they're lacking but I imagine they'll continue pushing.
EP was self-recorded, successfully done. I need to absorb this more. |
Yeah Tartar Lamb is amazing, they've played live here more than Kayo Dot actually have! (Though I think whenever they've tried to play the UK some members get held up so it turns into just Mia and Toby playing. Hm.)
And yeah, Toby hates filesharing.. he said one time that he could barely sell any copies of the first Tartar Lamb album and was running at a huge financial loss because it was self-released and that he found a download link of it with over 1200 downloads or so (near the number he'd have to sell to break even). I SHOULD be able to hear it tonight. I'm going to download it... but I'm obviously going to buy it when it comes out, I own everything they've done besides the Bloody Panda split 12" (which I would own if it hadn't sold out)! |
Just bought the new EP, didn't know it was available yet.

Had I known I'd of told you... has been for about a week or so |
I read somewhere that the release was in January and this is just a limited release? Not very definite.
