but come on. 'emo' is MCR, Fallout Boy, Panic at the Disco and the likes. we can all try and be uppity indie kids and go on about where the name first originated, but it's taken on a whole new image and sound all of it's own. 'Grunge' was a term first used for the likes of Neil Young, but we all know Seattle owns that term. same as 'emo'. it may have been used for a band or two at a specific point in time, but it's nothing compared to what that the monster that is known as 'emo' is nowadays. the term may have been stolen, but they can keep it, in my opinion. It's a lame term, no matter what the music sounds like.

No not just "hardcore punk" I was saying hardcore punk with emotion. ie Emotionally charge themes and musicianship.

I got what you meant. also known as 'post hardcore'?

ZEROpumpkins 09.05.2008 04:04 AM

Yeah, emo is a subgenre of Post-Hardcore. Not all Post -Hardcore is "emotional" or anything, hence where the term emo comes in.

MellySingsDoom 09.05.2008 04:49 AM

I remember someone on the Doomed Forever Forever Doomed board saying that Jesu was "emo" (they meant it as an insult). Emotional, for sure, but not "emo"!

ZEROpumpkins 09.05.2008 05:01 AM

Yeah there needs to be distinct distinction between the two, IMO. Set 'em straight, Melly.

Norma J 09.05.2008 05:12 AM

Which is why it's a shit term. everyone has a different opinion of what it is.

pbradley 09.05.2008 05:22 AM

Emo was a shit term to begin with. But you know how music fans and magazine critics are, ready to make movements out of anything. Fuck it all, I just avoid the term myself.

"emocore" < term ian used in mid 80's to describe a certain music (i.e. the dischord bands mentioned above), a certain "post hardcore" strand of music.

i dont know, i always thought the term was silly. pretty much all music is "emotional" in some sense.

actually i think thrasher used that term and ian mackaye just made fun of it and called it a shit term. it's funny cause the end of the palatka record there's a sample of him saying how it's "all caca". the video is now on youtube.

actually, the d.c. skinheads, the boston and ny hc bands and others who went to shows in d.c. called it emocore to ridicule how the audience didn't slam anymore and started bringing flowers to throw at the bands and cried when they played. kinda like calling it "softcore" instead of "hardcore."

then thrasher, maximum rock n' roll, etc. started to use that term as a put down.

Yet some fans, being utterly retarded, took it on as a pride thing.

ZEROpumpkins 09.05.2008 08:38 PM

Yeah well derogatory or not, it's still a term that has some relevance. I mean, today the word "emo" is an insult, but it's basically interchangeable with scene.

Inhuman 09.06.2008 12:22 AM

Emo haunts people. Just today I had another encounter.

Her: "Oh heeyyyyyyyyyy Rob!"
Me: "uh, hi"
Her: "It's been a while....what happened to your EMONESS?"

See what 3 years of sobering up from a past subculture can do to someone?

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/w4m/807746103.html . Nuff said.

As for the music, I haven't discovered new bands, just listening to a lot of Hot Cross and Moss Icon

Only to people that give a fuck.

"If you don't have the long dark hair and the adorable pout, I'm not for you."

Damn...I can always dye my hair black, but I'll really have the practice an 'adorable pout' to make the cut

pbradley 09.06.2008 02:14 AM

I have a far better 'what the fuck are talking about' face than any pout one.

jonathan 09.06.2008 04:32 PM

I've been listening to the fuck out of Heroin today and it has been awesome.

all of you should do the same

and quit whining.
