Pretty much, but I'd guess at Spiderland over Joy Division.

demonrail666 08.04.2008 06:56 AM

There's been around 70 different lists in so far, which is pretty amazing really. So a top twenty is gonna be quite possible.

Derek 08.04.2008 07:00 AM

yay

Pookie 08.04.2008 07:01 AM

There probably won't be too many surprises but then why would there be? We all read each other's posts and know each other's tastes.

Derek 08.04.2008 07:08 AM

Actually, I didn't know 70 people individually posted here, weird.

what exactly is DATED about loveless? and how can you listen to beefheart? that shit sounds so fucking DATED!

if you mean that tons of LOSER FUCKS ripped off it's sound then I agree but that does not DATE the album
the album is genius fucking awesome shit and will be listened to for decades.

Well I'd say that listening to Loveless it's pretty obvious when it was made while, to my ears at least, TMR could've been recorded yesterday, or tomorrow. Come on Rob, I know you don't like Beefheart, and I respect that, but you're just not making any sense about this. Loveless came at exactly the right time, bringing together the Dinosaur Jr/SY thing and fusing it with studio techniques that were unique to that moment.

TMR is a record that, when I hear it, despite the fact that I know when it was recorded, seems to stand outside of its era. There was a certain inevitability about the way in which Loveless was going to sound - given what was happening in the UK musically at that time. I don't think the same can be said of TMR. Not that that necessarily makes TMR a better album than Loveless. Although personally I think it is.

therealglenstyler 08.04.2008 10:25 AM

oh i think i misunderstood this (it was very early when i logged on).

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 10:31 AM

dude, everything can sound dated, espciaLLY SEMINAL albums.

any and all prog music sounds dated.

anything shoegaze sounds dated. (I hate these terms, but,....)

there really are very few albums that are ahead of their time enough to not sound dated 20 years later, and even those will eventually, just gve them another decade or so...

I would describe Loveless as DEFINING a type of rock music, and anything that defines a genre will be diluted by the myriad progenitors of such a sound.

I agree. And like I said, being dated doesn't necessarily make an album 'bad'. Sgt Pepper's has to be one of the most dated albums imaginable and yet I can (and do) still listen to it regularly. In the case of TMR, I sort of liken it to John Fahey's 'Transfiguration ...' album. Unless someone told me in advance, I'd have very little idea when it was recorded. Again, that doesn't necessarily make it 'good' but, it just so happens that it is ... extremely so, in my opinion.

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 10:51 AM

I'll give you that.

jimbrim 08.04.2008 10:57 AM

As much as I adore Loveless, I only really included it in my list due to the fact that I knew a lot of people would vote for it, otherwise my list would be very pointless, I mean who else here would vote for Burial's first album?

Having said that, The Fall's 'Live At The Witch Trials' could very well stand a chance, I'll just have to see...

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 11:09 AM

hey man, you should pick what you feel are the GREATEST and if you truly feel that Burial's moody bleeps and bloops are among the greatest you should ahve included it!

demonrail666 08.04.2008 11:15 AM

I agree. Otherwise it becomes pointless. Does anybody really think that Rob thought Warrant's Cherry Pie had a realistic chance of winning? No, but he came from the heart. Which is why I'll always love the fucker.

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 11:18 AM

hahahahahhah!

my g/f is more like dulce de leche pie! yeah!

lets get lewd!

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 11:18 AM

I cannot wait to see the results for this!!!!

No, I did include Burial! I am just saying that I didn't want all of my choice's to be pointless, so I decided to include Loveless as I knew it would stand a chance, plus it's a fantastic record anyway. At the time, if I knew Demonrail would receive as many votes as he has, I probably wouldn't have included it.

did you read that story about Burial being Aphex Twin and Fatboy Slim?

what's the point of voting something higher than you think it ought to be?

acousticrock87 08.04.2008 06:45 PM

That's kinda why I didn't vote. I don't think any of mine would make the list, and there's no point in voting other stuff higher than it should be.

sarramkrop 08.04.2008 06:47 PM

I'm including a Fushitusha album and i'm nowhere near a fan of either them or Keiji Haino as much you are, as well as not having much time for his music or alleged legendary persona all that much.

So? You never know who's gonna vote what that's the cool part about it.

I voted for the Ting Tings album ten times. Ha Ha Ha!

I want to listen to "Pathetique" again - the first track on that is pure uncut Win. So there.

demonrail666 08.04.2008 06:54 PM

Well either way, whether people voted for what they wanted to win, or what they thought might, I'm done. No more lists please. I'm confident looking at individual entries that most people were reasonably honest in what they submitted. So I'll be posting the final top twenty later today (tuesday) in a seperate thread, where you can all dissect what has been (I hope) a quite fascinating selection of albums.

Thanks to all of you who submitted. There's bound to be controversies but, looking at the final result in front of me right now, it seems like a fairly honest list of albums that a site such as this (with its obvious biases) would consider great.

Thanks again. Although had I known in advance that so many of you would have entered lists I'd have employed a secretary.

acousticrock87 08.04.2008 06:56 PM

Despite my apathy in voting, I'm excited to see the result.

Trasher02 08.04.2008 06:58 PM

I'm excited too though I don't think it'll be a suprising top 20.

acousticrock87 08.04.2008 07:03 PM

I'm sure there will be a few surprises, and that will be worth it.

i love our obvious biases

demonrail666 08.04.2008 07:46 PM

Aint no bias like a west coast bias.

OK, it's "officially" in my top 5 albums from now on, alright?

gualbert 08.04.2008 08:38 PM

So , what are the top five records of the silent majority around here , and let's try to be a part of it?

I won't try , but I guess the result will be:
Sonic Youth.Daydream Nation ( or Sister ).
MBV.Loveless.
The Velvet Underground and Nico.
Wire.Pink Flag.
Minor Threat.dicography.

It's on a tabloid but I read about it on the NME website while I gave one of their journalists a really acidic reply about the Psychedelic Horsehit gig in London.

remarkable!

jimbrim 08.04.2008 09:22 PM

The Wire did a great article on Burial a few months ago, and I think I remember reading about him growing up in the mid-nineties, being too young to get into any of the clubs, and simply relying on his older brother to bring home the lastest Dn'B records. So i guess that rules out the possibilty
that he could be either Aphex Twin or Fatboy Slim.

People also say Kode9 is Burial, but I think thats only because he releases through Hyperdub.

sarramkrop 08.04.2008 09:26 PM

I don't really care as I don't like Burial one bit. He could be or (s)he could be not, it doesn't make any difference.

jimbrim 08.04.2008 09:31 PM

Fair Do's. Goodnight!
