Jesus and Mary Chain.
I saw them in 1986 and they lived up to the hype. Saw them again in 1998 (I think) and they were dull. |

you fucking said it mells |
I pretty much like all Godflesh to an extent.
But yeah the earlier releases were a long more brutal. |
I still need to get more Godflesh. I only have Streetcleaner and it kicks my ass in more than any other album I own.
|
Super Creep - their s/t 1st LP and "Pure" are keepers. Also of note is the Fall Of Because CD, "Life Is Easy" (Justin, Benny and Paul Neville's pre-Godflesh band, who really do sound like a cross between Whitehouse and Swans).
|
godflesh-hymns is amazing and thats thier last record. in fact, for different reasons streetcleaner and hymns are my favorite godflesh releases. broadrick is genius, i have never disliked anything hes been involved with. i like/love 'scum', godflesh, final, head of david, techno animal, god, ice, and the mighty jesu have all made fantastic music.
|
I loves me Jesu - I don't have absolutely everything by them, but what I've heard is bliss city. Demonrail and I are MASSIVE fans of Head Of David up until "Dustbowl" (whence they turned into an awful comedy metal act) - I've got a live version of "I Am Roadkill" at home which kills. I used to see God a lot in London back in the day, both as a harsh noise-rock outfit, and as the "industrial-jazz" beast they later turned into.

Echo and the Bunnymen
Verve Flaming Lips Ween Jade Warrior Metallica Amon Duul II - good god, did they get bad after making some of the greatest music ever. |

how can you not acknowledge the fact that 'appetite...' was one of the best rock n roll albums of all time. they were all amazing musicians, good songwriters, and wild as fuck junkies and alcoholics. they were everything great about rock n roll ever rolled into one band, the rolling stones of the 80s; amazing chops, the godlike lead guitarist (keith richards) in slash, the maniacal hip swiveling reckless frontman (mick) in axl, the mysterious rhythm guitarist (brian jones) in izzy, duff was thier bridge to punk rock and brought his hardcore esque bass to the table giving them a sense of dangerousness not seen in any of the lame ass hair bands of the time, and shit, every song on appetite is great. but of course, like the stones they eventually would become a parody of themselves. but i dont understand how people can not admit that they were a great band. whether or not you like them is fine, but you cant say they werent rockin as hell. no matter how wierd my taste in music has gotten, i still get chills from the opening riff to 'welcome to the jungle'. |

god is fucking great. im a huge fan of kevin martin too. the guys done everything from extreme free jazz punk (he was a member of 16-17 for a short while, god) industrial hip hop (techno animal, ice), and his new project the bug, which is a miz of the industrial hip hop of which hes famous for, and dancehall, the shit is extreme music that you can dance to! awesome stuff. the new the bug record 'london zoo' is one of my favorites of the year. i suggest if anyone is into any of the aforementioned bands they check it out. |
Appetite for Destruction is easily one of the best albums ever made. Fuck. It's amazing.
Almost everything they did was great. |
Appetite for Destruction is a pile of overproduced LA rock crap. You lose IQ points every time you listen, and not in a good way like with Blue Cheer or something. I remember when that album came out and how much it represented everything I loathed about music at that time. There was never anything remotely "cool" about that band or their music.
Memories are short. |

"Use Your Illusion I and II" were a bit too ridiculous and long but some of the epic songs like Estranged were amazing. They were best at rocking though.
"Spaghetti Incident" was a bunch of decent covers of mostly awesome punk songs. "Lies" was great. "Appetite"... Rocket Queen and It's So Easy are so great. Really, G'N'R were amazing songwriters. The same can't be said for most bands on here that people like (Battles, Liars, etc). |
Appetite has amazing riffs, solid playing, great solos (a true rarity), catchy choruses, structurally complex songs. Just brilliant.

serge gainsbourg
he was BRILLIANT for the 60s and the beggining of the 70s. then he started making reggea hip hop |
Frickin' Wire. They got baaaad.
|
Very true. They have done nothing but shit except for Read and Burn 1 and 2 (and Send) for many many years.

Guns N Roses pretended (to this day!) that they were putting an end to the the whole 'hair metal'/LA Glam/power ballad phenomenon. The truth of the matter is that 90% of listeners at the time saw them as just an extension of that whole scene. Even Jane's Addiction, who were sometimes compared to G 'N' R in the very beginning, sounded a million light years from them.

THANK YOU |
I'm pretty surprised that no one has mentionned:
PIXIES Okay maybe that does not count as they sucked from the moment they were reunited but still... Http://youtube.com/watch?v=_cPEPj0ji9s http://youtube.com/watch?v=jW1a3cSaqbU Come on... |
Also someone mentionned Primal Scream - I actually dislike everything they've done except XTRMNTR that I consider as a masterpiece, so I guess I disagree with this statement :D
|
Eh? So, we're judging the quality of live shows in the face of not having any new material (in reference to Pixies)? Because, from album to album, Pixies were a band that got better on every release (I'm not a fan of Bossanova but musically it's about a million times more accomplished than Surfer Rosa, for example).
I'm not even a big Pixies fan... I'm just saying, they never got bad. |
Yes that's why I said maybe it did not count. But still, as they did nothing new after Trompe Le Monde, I think we can judge on their live shows - and gosh look at that, now they look like a stupid old ass Pixies tribute band...
Still, I don't really think they got better with every release... Doolittle is my personal fave and Bossanova the one I like the least. Trompe Le Monde is fantastic though. I don't know |
I'm not talking about your personal favorites, I'm saying they actually got better, musically and songwriting-wise, on every release. I mean, DRAMATICALLY better from release to release. Though, obviously, they lost some of their energy which is what most people loved about their music.
Trompe le Monde, from every angle, is probably their best though. But yeah, did anyone say Breeders yet? That band went from passable to the worst band I've ever heard. |
I love Pod, but everything after that is equally meh.
|

same. but i think everything after that is below the meh level |

I do see your approach though, they did become much more tighter as a band, but those later albums lacked an enthusiastic spark that Surfer Rosa was brimming of. I personally think even though they got tighter, they seemed to have got bored (also the fact that the band were always arguing in those days, adding fire to how they just couldn't be bothered anymore). Though whatever tightness they had in the songwriting department went away fast, Frank's solo albums are AWFUL. |

what was the name of the first song on the first interpol record? Ive got it laying around somewhere...it was the reason I bought the whole record, this song is so dope! need to listen to it right now, but yes they suck now |
Beck for sure... Information was so dull, and hes found a new level of dullness on Modern Guilt. Tosser. What happened to the vibrant world of odelay?

ESTRANGED was brilliant.

I always find that odd when the band members go on about this. I don't mind GnR, but even I'd say they're one of THE most self-deluded bands. |
Yeah Axl Rose is a total douche.
|
Yeah, but they were all pretty cretinous at the end of the day. Savage Clone is probably right in saying that they represent all that is bad, but at the same time I do have a real soft spot them. Although, to be honest that's probably more for the whole GnR concept, and phenomenon, than for their actual music.
It's similar in that way to my fascination with the Sex Pistols. Another band whose 'story' is far more interesting than their music. |

Liz Phair never did anything worthwhile after her excellent debut album.
