Rare Ravers ended up being released on January 18, 2019. I ordered the CD and gave it a listen on my drive to Houston last night, it’s phenomenal in a good ear cleaning kind of way : )

New Michael Morley and Handful of Dust 2xLPs available February 22 on Thin Wrist:
Michael Morley - Heavens Idleness Awaits Deluxe Gatefold 2LP & Download Michael Morley has long been acclaimed for his electric guitar and electronic forays in New Zealand’s legendary The Dead C and Gate. On Heavens Idleness Awaits he strips his music to its most elemental state. Recorded at home and using only a single tracked acoustic guitar, Morley creates an intimate and intensely meditative work. Over four side-long tracks, he weaves hypnotic melodic figures that slowly unfurl to reveal a minimalist masterwork and one of his most powerful statements to date. https://www.blackeditionsgroup.com/p...hips-feb-22nd/ A Handful of Dust - Dragging Her Wings of Rusty Knives: Selected Recordings 1994-2016 Deluxe 2LP & Download A Handful of Dust was founded over three decades ago by two giants of the New Zealand underground, Bruce Russell (The Dead C) and Alastair Galbraith. Declaring theirraison d’être in the now infamous Free Noise Manifesto the group has advanced a radical aesthetic; Rejecting any notion of structure or comfort they’ve ground music toit’s sub-elemental parts. A scraping and howling electricity, spontaneous, unrestrained, physical: i) Being beyond “music,” it is noise. ii) Being beyond “rules,” it is free. Includes expanded and unreleased works spanning the group’s history including their first studio recordings since 1995 and new writings, a late coda to The Journal of Vain Erudition, Logopandocy. https://www.blackeditionsgroup.com/p...ed-recordings/ |

Seymour Glass speaks with Michael Morley about his new double album Heavens Idleness Awaits. As the publisher of the seminal underground zine Bananafish, Glass first wrote about Morley when his work with the Dead C and as Gate first crossed the pacific from New Zealand and made it's earliest ripples in the American underground...

This thread has gotten me intrigued.
I don't listen to any New Zealand artists (except Lorde), and these guys sound like they'd be up my alley. What should I start with? |
the b-side of the new LP is prime, how they continue to create pure fucking alchemy from electricity and scum is beyond me.
|
when it all coheres into that totally fogged groove in the final 10 minutes from some of the most brutalising dirt they’ve ever conjured I get some fat-azz tingles

Harsh 70s Reality is often regarded as their best album. It bridges the gap from their early years writing songs to their next phase of being much more/totally improvised. They also put out a best of called Vain Erudite and Stupid, which might also give you a good overview. If you are interested in NZ music generally Bruce Russell (one of the Dead C's guitarists) also compiled two fantastic compilations one called Time to Go: The Southern Psychedelic Moment 1981-1986, of NZ indie bands in the 80s and another called Le Jazz Non of 90s NZ improv/noise bands |

They only have White House and onwards on Spotify, so I started with (and enjoyed) that. Onto Trapdoor Fucking Exit now. EDIT: Apparently it's out of order. Maybe going by CD release date. |

Those are fantastic records and just as good a pace to start, odd that Harsh 70s isn't up their seeing as all those records came out on the same label |
Eusa Kills, Trapdoor, and 70's are early highlights.

My favourite from the early days is dr503c
