Do you mean just objects or actual people? In the usa we usually address objects as "her" but people are referred to as "he"

umm. the address "he" stems from the bible and ten commandments as well as other early documents. You wouldnt replace "he" with "they" because "he" is singular, "they" is plural. But if you meant it the way I think you did, we would regard people as "it" and thats just not correct.

Those people are, like, weird.

I read it in a textbook on Biblical translation. People have a problem with the fact that the Bible was translated as "he," and thus it's politically incorrect, and "they" is evolving past being strictly plural. Whether it was grammatical trend speculation or a surfacing rule is impossible to tell.

terminal pharmacy 07.28.2006 08:41 PM

like prince

Cantankerous 07.28.2006 08:41 PM

Fuck 'em.
SMOKE MORE.

acousticrock87 07.28.2006 08:42 PM

Not anymore. It's now "the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince." Prince for short.

oh ok, that could be right. you are suggesting that they miss translated it? interesting. but the damage has already been done and right or wrong it has still had a profound effect on our dialect, and the bible is not the only example of this.

You mean "mistranslated."

acousticrock87 07.28.2006 08:45 PM

Actually, I think "he" was accurate. But it's "sexist" so they want to make people happy by adjusting it. Or something.

Cantankerous 07.28.2006 08:45 PM

Well, I'm not a "feminist," so "fuck them."

Toilet & Bowels 07.28.2006 08:46 PM

this was a good thread until it got derailed by a couple of idiots trying to be clever.

acousticrock87 07.28.2006 08:47 PM

Is this "Chris" "Farley" enough for "you?"
