i'm also enjoying the new death grips. i agree with the "more accessible than the last album" consensus

Now that with The Money Store they managed to prove they can be damn impressive even with a slightly less "savage" delivery, I think it's safe to say these guys are great. In my personal opinion, best thing in "experimental hip hop" (argh...) since cLOUDDEAD. i was shocked to find out this guy is white. haha. hardest white rapper in a looong time.

The New Mark McGuire collaboration with Spencer Clark from Skaters is pretty cool. It's called Inner Tube and it was released on Pacific Sound Vision. It's much better than his album from last year in my opinion. Stylistically it's very psychedelic with elements of surf rock.

The Flaming Lips- The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. Seriously!!!

Believe it or not, this actually holds together really well!! I've been irritated by their apparent lack of interest in releasing anything that wasn't either a) a novelty item, or b) several thousand dollars and creepy... but this collection of highlights plays really well! If you close your eyes an click your heels, you can almost pretend it's an album! ;)

FL's are the best, and I really prefer actual albums to random one-off collabos and ep's, so 2011 was kind of a let-down year for me. But this almost makes up for it. It sounds like Embryonic, only with more color and variety.

Know what would be even better, though? An actual new Flaming Lips studio album. :o

Control System by Ab-Soul

conceptually this might be the best release to come out of TDE yet (the same group as Kendrick, Schoolboy Q & Jay Rock).
Ab-Soul talks about the recent death of his girlfriend Alori Joh (who sang the hook on HiiiPower), as well as the disease he had when he was a kid: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which still affects him to this day.
the closing track "The Book of Soul" is the closest to a tear jerker i've heard in a while. damn.

Definitely a great release of this year (awesome cover art too)

At first I wasn't so impressed. Yeah, yeah, boys playing rock music. Then after I heard it the songs lingered in my head, and really made an impression! These are very well put together tunes. But hey, The Men, and Women, and the rest: yr bnd nms sck. ;)

Olympia band Broken Water new release the Tempest is a solid record. It's a bit noisey with some shoegazing guitar thrown in for good measure.
