Swans are curating a festival at KOKO on the 3rd and 4th of April. It should be great.

Genteel Death 11.17.2012 09:45 AM

Is it true that Swans are curating a festival at KOKO on the 3rd and 4th of April? If it's true it should be great.

Tickets : £7 adv / £8 on the door

Rare duo (Matthew Bower, Samantha Davies) show for Skullflower, this configuration having last played at cold springs 21 anniversary event with MZ412 in 2011, where they were asked to play Fylkingen, Stockholm in January 2013.

Skullflower will be performing 'SECOND SAD CIRCLE' a homage to whirlwinds, illicit love, and hell, (referencing Dante's retelling of Francesca di Riminis sad tale that so moved Keats), in front of the 'white wolf' projektions. Strings/loops/vokills and manipulations.

Not a gig, but as good a place as any to put this:

Tony Oursler

Tate Modern

Saturday 16 February 2013

As American artist Tony Oursler’s phantasmagoric projection installation The Influence Machine occupies Tate Modern’s River Landscape, Tate Film presents a selection of Oursler’s single-channel videos. Best known for his multimedia installations often featuring ‘talking’ sculptures locked in existential quandaries, Oursler has been experimenting with video since the late 1970s, fusing strange dream landscapes and meandering psychodramatic narratives in a grotesque expressionistic theatre made entirely from recycled fragments of mediated experiences and pop-cultural tropes.

Programme One (14.00 – 15.00) is a free screening presenting two works featuring artist, filmmaker and musician Tony Conrad, who collaborated with Oursler on the soundtrack for The Influence Machine. Sound Digressions in Seven Colors is the single-channel version of a multi-channel projection installation, in which looped recordings of seven performers are superimposed in an experiment with chance recombination. Synesthesia: Tony Conrad is one in a series of interviews with seminal figures working at the intersection of experimental music, performance and art, originally part of the Poetics Project, an ongoing collaboration with Mike Kelley aimed at creating an open archive on the cross-pollinations of art and music, previously presented as a multimedia installation.

Programme Two (16.00 – 18.00) follows the development of Oursler’s visual language, from his characteristically low-tech set designs, inventively assembled from brightly painted cardboard and household objects, to the use of long fixed-camera shots and claustrophobic close-ups reminiscent of his projected doll pieces. Programme Two will be followed by a Q&A between James Lingwood (Co-Director, Artangel) and Iwona Blazwick (Director, Whitechapel Gallery).

Thanks!

^^I figured at least you and one other person would be interested in that.

Hopefully I'll catch them at KRAAK myself, depending on things and stuff.

Genteel Death 02.18.2013 06:51 PM

I'm hoping Mattin and co. are going to play a lot of the new tracks from ''Buildings from Bilbao'' because what I've heard off it so far is killer stuff.

Genteel Death 02.18.2013 07:08 PM

The choice of venue for this gig is weird. I live round the corner from it and never knew that Storm Bugs played their first gig in years there in July 2012! Damn.

I liked the new one, but their 2007-2008 stuff (i.e. the Sacrilege compilation) remains my favourite Bao by far.

Genteel Death 02.18.2013 07:20 PM

I've never heard the stuff on the Sacrilege compilation but I've played ''Dialectics of Shit'' quite a lot, at one point. Have you heard that Exquisite Corpse record he did with Kevin Failure, Loy ''Acapulco'' Fankbonner (who also still plays in The Chinese Restaurants, I think) and Margarida Garcia? Messy but in a good way.

pokkeherrie 02.19.2013 03:17 AM

Dialectics of Shit is actually on that Sacrilege compilation, together with Fuck Separation and a 7" of which the name escapes me right now.

I haven't heard Exquisite Corpse (wasn't even aware of it), but it sounds like something I need to check out.

This clashes with the first night of Denovali Swingfest unfortunately, but I'm hoping to catch the first few acts of that (up to and including Fennesz) before moving on to Corsica Studios. Not sure I'll have the stamina to make it all the way through to 6 am, but it's the two acts named above that I'm especially keen to see, and I get the impression they're early on the bill. I'll leave the partying through the night to the young uns!

Weird that they're reforming without Nanjo, but also sort of poetic justice.

Saw them last night in Rotterdam. They were alright but I wouldn't say you missed a whole lot. I had a feeling they have more in them than what comes out on stage and I had a similar feeling the last time they played here, about 4-5 years ago.

How is it poetic justice? What's the story behind that?

Selvhenter
Cafe Oto
Friday 19 April 2013 - 8pm
Tickets : £7 adv / £8 on the door

The Danish band SELVHENTER is quickly becoming one of the most exciting new experimental bands in Europe. Their unique sound combines the energy of rock with free improvisation and noise but also draws inspiration from the percussion music of Africa and Southeast Asia, and modern minimalist composition. In their music, the two drummers create strong polyrhythmic patterns while the horns and violin develop simple patterns of melody. In addition, both saxophone, trombone and violin often use effect pedals to distort and manipulate their sounds. The result is beautiful, aggressive and good for dancing. SELVHENTER's live concerts are always curious, focused and full of energy.

SELVHENTER is: Sonja LaBianca (saxophone), Maria Bertel (trombone), Maria Diekmann (violin), Jaleh Negari (drums) and Anja Jacobsen (drums). The five members of the band come from some of the interesting bands on the Copenhagen experimental music scene, such as Pinkunoizu, Havens Fugle, Chimes & Bells, Gud Er Kvinde, Valby Vokalgruppe, Kirsten Ketsjer and Choir Of Young Believers.

SELVHENTER was formed in 2007 as a trio of violin, saxophone and trombone. In 2008 they expanded with two drummers. The band released their first full length album in 2012 under the title “Frk. B. Fricka”. It was produced by legendary guitarist and film music composer Peter Peter and was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize 2012.

In 2010, the members of SELVHENTER founded the art collective and record label EGET VÆRELSE (a room of one's own) – a platform for the projects they create together or individually.

I got the impression that there isn't a single person in Japan that Nanjo hasn't pissed off, mainly due to his releasing loads of people's music on La Musica without asking them first and without paying them.

The band now seems to be called "Makoto Kawabata's Mainliner", which I can't say I'm very keen on.

Anyway, here's a photo.
