Oh, also watched

HIM AND ME - 10/10

a newly unearthed James Benning film. James Benning, of course, is the most important experimental filmmaker still making films today; it's just too damn bad it's so hard to see his work. I snatch up everything I can find, but there's NOTHING commercially available, and only like 15 of his movies bootlegged -- out of, y'know, like a hundred films he's made.

This is another film that really has no real story, characters, or narration. It appears to be a look back at James's life. As usual, it's beautifully-shot, with tons of long takes... so captivating even when "nothing" happens. Truly cinema at its finest.

atsonicpark 09.03.2010 12:38 AM

Anyone else into Apichatpong Weerasethakul? I found out that SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY was recently voted BEST FILM OF THE PAST 10 YEARS by some snobby festival. It's not that good but it's pretty mindblowing in a way.

I'm just trying to figure out this cover. Why would the barbell bend that way? Those kids must be fucking heavy! Anyway, the Barbarian Brothers both look like Jimmy Smits on that cover.

batman: under the red hood - 8/10

WOW! What a surprise! This is by far the best Batman-related.. well... anything.. since Mask of Phantasm and Batman: The Animated Series' heyday. It's even darker than B:TAS at times, in fact, and has the best action scenes I've seen in a Batman movie. The only thing I can fault with this is that John DiMaggio -- you know, BENDER -- does Joker's voice, and it's TERRIBLE. He sounds like some gruff gangster now, and his laugh is gravelly and ... it doesn't fit the character, and especially doesn't fit the animation/look for the character. Imagine Morgan Freeman doing the voice of a little white girl or something. It's that ridiculous and dramatic. Luckily, he's not in it very long, and the rest of the movie is as excellent as they come, and blows away all the recent Nolan flicks by miles.

greenberg - 6/10

Weird film is slightly amusing for most of its length, if a bit pointless and one of those films you'd never want to watch again. Strangely the cast is made up of a bunch of mumblecore regulars -- with Ben Stiller, in his best role ever (?!). Yes, Stiller is playing a serious guy... but unlike Permanent Midnight (where her plays the worst "heroin addict" ever), Black and White (where he's an impossible-to-take-seriously cop), and Reality Bites (where he's an old rich businessman; he's supposed to be uncool, and he pulls that off, but other than that, he just feels awkward in the role)..... you can take him seriously! The film consists of him being an asshole, walking around, acting crazy until he suddenly isn't so crazy, going down on a chick, and bitching. He gets the only funny line in the movie, where after he snorts a line of coke, he says "LET'S PUT ON SOME COKE MUSIC!" and he puts on Duran Duran. Interesting little film but eh.

stu666 09.04.2010 03:44 AM

watched this again, it seemed to be a better film watching it on a tv rather than at the cinema.

Phantasm - which seems better and makes more sense each time i see it.

great kill scenes, but kind of boring at times. I think I figured it was gong to be a lot better in my head -- based on the scenes shown in GOING TO PIECES

Just watched "Maniac" with my bros after getting stoned on budweiser, weed and somas all day. Liked it a lot, acting was decidedly above par for a slasher flick.

Gotta love batreleaser.

It's not that good of a movie, btw, you can live without knowing the truth, believe me.

I watched Moon (nice, but not as interesting as I hoped)
and Vengeance

loved it even if it's not flawless, I love the mood and the "unrealistic" scenes.

The Wizard of Gore is a 2007 splatter/noir film directed by Jeremy Kasten. It stars Crispin Glover as Montag the Magnificent, Kip Pardue as Ed Bigelow, Bijou Phillips as Ed's girlfriend Maggie, and the Suicide Girls as Montag's victims. It was filmed in Los Angeles and director Kasten refers to it as "love letter" to Downtown LA. It is a remake of the 1970 Herschell Gordon Lewis classic.

...it was way better than I expected.

My first Antonioni. Beautiful film, I love the colours and the way they're used. And the soundtrack is just mindblowing, some kind of early Cluster-like industrial/electronic/noisy kind of music that does so much for the mood. Other than that, it didn't do much for me. I didn't really care about the story. Beautiful and well played, but not particularly interesting.

diamondsea 09.05.2010 11:40 AM

Best italian director ever hands down. My favourite Antonioni's 'first leg' movie is "L'eclisse". No story, of course, only Alain Delon and Monica Vitti who get lost. And then, no characters at all... "L'avventura" is mesmerizing and stunning too. You can watch Scorsese's essay about them in his film about italian movies.

Really? I thought it deserved at least an 8. A bit preachy in parts (what exploitation film isn't?), but a good time is had by all...

And for the Lohan fans, she's naked in it...

LifeDistortion 09.06.2010 04:16 AM

Heard the Lohan nudity was a body double. What a cheat, not that she looks good anymore anyways. Plus she's already been naked, why didn't she do a topless scene at eighteen? When men actually wanted to see her naked. (2004)

Surveillance was hilariously dumb. French Stewart as a badass? I mean, COME ON!... So, I kinda liked it.

Uh.. 5/10 I guess.

200 motels is quite mah yeah but I love baby snakes with it's bruce bickford animation

atsonicpark 09.06.2010 02:48 PM

I'm a huge Bruce Bickford fan. PROMETHEUS' GARDEN is one of my favorite films of all time.

Count Mecha 09.06.2010 02:49 PM

Watched it on a complete whim. Um, fine I suppose, strange pacing and alot of useless scenes. The characters have well, no character to speak of. The story is just kind of there and a little too dumb to really think too much about. The creature effects are pretty cool though. Pyramid Head looked pretty intimidating. But even as neat as those were, it seemed like too much of a gallery of them. As in 'ok, here's this monster, now here's this one, and then this one, and so on...'. I don't know how closely this movie resembles the games (I've only played a small portion of the fourth one), but the music sounds like it was probably lifted from the games. So sure, it's an ok one timer.

atsonicpark 09.06.2010 02:49 PM

atsonicpark 09.06.2010 02:53 PM

I think the Silent Hill games are some of the worst I've ever played. Cool music and great atmosphere, but the actual gameplay is TERRIBLE. You spend the game SLOWLY running around foggy-as-fuck towns and hitting people with clubs (in some of the games, the weapons break...?!), talking to people, and solving stupid puzzles, like "hmm.. there's a locked door and it has a horse head shape in it... perhaps if I go up a floor and hit a few people with my club, one of them will drop a HORSE HEAD DOOR KEY!"

I know a lot of people really enjoy the atmosphere/stories whatever, but I do find it odd that Killer7 -- one of the best games of the last-gen -- was ridiculed for its supposed "simplistic" (which it is, no denying that, but it's also FUN) gameplay, when Silent Hill is given the pass.

Anyway..

davenotdead 09.06.2010 02:55 PM

goin to see Machete now...

Honestly, it was one of the best things Rodriguez has done as far as I'm concerned. I just feel like he nailed it. Like all the good things he's done in the past were put together without any of the shit I don't like that he's done.

Please make Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. And please include way more Lohan.

Noises Off

davenotdead 09.06.2010 06:25 PM

this was kinda good. not great....

how i rank the ultra-violent/b-grade movies this year:

Machete 6/10

Piranha 3D 9/10

Kick-Ass 10/10

Kick-Ass hit all the right notes, and had enough surprises plus Nic Cage being hilarious. Piranha was so over-the-top and had non-stop lulz.... Machete was slow in some parts, predictably preachy, though it did have some real funny parts, mostly from Segal and Lohan... De Niro's character was such a waste.... could've been so much more fun had with his and Don Johnson's characters... overall just not a home run like Kick-Ass and Piranha were.
