you're asking me if there's free will or if this has been predetermined, aren't you?

mine was probably 3 (brother mouzone!!) but 2 was a nice detour in the narrative that set up all the connections to the bigger world.

it's a very religiously accurate soap opera, with all the more criminal-minded characters done by all the best 70s actors

evollove 08.10.2014 09:00 AM

Which TV show most accurately represents your idea of how Washington DC works?

VEEP - Completely selfish, cruel people with no real values or loyalty, but often brought down by incompetence or the inability to deal with unexpected events

HOUSE OF CARDS - Brilliant strategists two steps ahead of everyone else, mixed with dullards who are easy to manipulate. Murder to protect/advance career not out of the question.

WEST WING - Generally principled people who sometimes do the right thing, sometimes end up doing the wrong thing, but they usually try to make a decent effort. In the end, they are probably more principled than politically savvy. Also, very charming.

ha ha ha-- good characterizations there.

having lived there, i've met all 3 kinds. well, not the murderers, at least not in person (e.g. prick cheney) but the idealists, the narcissists, the power-lusty, the vapid, the sadists, the sycophants, the slaves, they're all there.

/*******SPOILERS******

one character in house of cards has defied my attempts to decipher him and that is/was stamper. what the fuck is/was his deal?

*******SPOILERS******/

evollove 08.10.2014 09:33 AM

^ If Stampers exist, I don't think you're supposed to know about them.

But they probably don't.

I like that show a lot, but it's right on the edge of being very silly. I'm not convinced there's a genius like Frank Underwood in Congress. Seems most politicians are desperately trying to keep their head above water and can't conceive of two steps ahead. Most are two steps behind, and I don't think many have a grand scheme because things move and change so fast, there's no point.

!@#$%! 08.10.2014 09:42 AM

on the edge maybe, but it hasn't jumped the shark yet. has it? i enjoyed season 2 a lot. especially in the metro station, mmhuahahahahahahaa...

what i mean about stamper is-- what the fuck makes him tick? why so loyal? the other dude (the new dude) i get it he wants power and he'll bend over as deep as he needs in order to learn it, but stamper i don't know.

as for frank underwoods out there-- i don't know because if they are we're not supposed to know about them either, no?-- until they get caught anyway

I might re-watch TRUE DETECTIVE.

Every scene crackles with dramatic tension, great acting, dialogue, etc. Can't say enough good things about it.

Except:

**spoilers**

By episode 4 I was getting a little lost. By the end, I had no idea what was going on, and I'm still not sure how they found the bad guy. I watched that scene two or three times and I still scratched my head. Someone (who?) got their house painted. Huh?

I think the series should've been shorter. Four episodes maybe. There are so many tangents and subplots and red herrings, and so many characters we're supposed to remember. Should've boiled it down to something more manageable.

The chopped-up timeline doesn't help.

Even the title is confusing. Who is the "true" detective? Is the other one "false"? I don't get it.

If I do re-watch it, I might have to take notes. I know film is supposed to be the new literature, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

evollove 08.10.2014 09:47 AM

I don't know. Frank Underwood would've laughed off Watergate and put out a hit on Woodward and Bernstein. Or maybe just hire some hookers to ruin their reputation.

If there is a Richard III in Washington, he does a great job keeping under the radar.

I'm so sexist. Maybe it's a woman. Elizabeth Warren?

!@#$%! 08.10.2014 09:47 AM

what? no! the chopped up timeline works great. all is clear as fuck. maybe add subtitles to get through their hick accents. it's what i do.
