ten nights of dreams - 8/10

FREE LEECH FUCKING RULES!

atsonicpark 12.25.2010 02:06 AM

I'm getting this right now, sounds amazing:

In winter of 1974, German film director Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man) walked from Munich to Paris to see his dying friend, film critic Lotte Eisner, hoping that by making the journey on foot he would somehow force her to stay alive. In summer 2005, hoping simply to meet the man who had inspired him to make movies, actor/filmmaker Linas Phillips made his own pilgrimage, walking 1,200 miles from Seattle to Herzog’s Los Angeles home. Braving freeway traffic, weather, the California Highway Patrol and his own self-doubt, Linas fulfills a dream that parallels the filmic dreams accomplished by his hero. But as one marginal roadside character after another shares a story with him– redemptive, tragic, funny – they begin to steal focus from Linas’ obsession with Herzog. There is Scorpio Johnnie Angel, who began walking thirteen years ago in Tallahassee, Florida, when his wife and daughters were killed in a convenience store hold-up. Eli, a nursing student, walked from Los Angeles to the Oregon Coast, intending to kill himself but finding a new start instead. Brian, an itinerant chainsaw carver in the Redwoods, tells the story of how he murdered his girlfriend’s brother eleven years ago. Punctuated by Herzog’s voiceovers, these stories and Linas’ own spiritual battles make Walking to Werner as much a testament to human vulnerability and redemption as a chronicle of the 1,200-mile quest to meet the legendary director.

atsonicpark 12.25.2010 04:35 PM

Yeah hausu is one of the best films ever, though that director made a lot better stuff, if you can believe it. Check out his shorts on ubuweb. He's amazing. I really like Hausu because it shares a lot in common with Japanese new wave stuff, it reminds me of Terayama in places (Obayashi's shorts are very Terayama-like, especially EMOTION). But it also has a really fun horror vibe to it. It's probably the single most entertaining "horror" film ever made.

Gomorra - 9/10

Somewhere - 10/10

From a Sight + Sound review
"a long sequence in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere shows its protagonist, film star Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff), spending a couple of days in Milan to receive an award. 'Scathing' is not a word in Coppola's vocabulary, but her representation of the vacuity of Italy's television-and-boobs obsession is delivered with supreme clarity - and ends with Marco's escape to the airport."

From a Cineforum review (sorry for not translating, but that's a quite similar opinion.

LifeDistortion 12.26.2010 05:11 AM

I would definately agree with you on "Gomorrah". It was a near perfect movie in some ways. The violence is just out of nowhere. Crazy how the director of the movie had to go into hiding after making it.

I watched with the family:

Halloween on XMas I saw "Night of the Demons" (2010)

Diora Baird is blessed.

7,5/10

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 09:24 AM

going to have to check out somewhere. Sounds kinda neat. THAT'S SO WEIRD you watched death to smoochy, loubarret, I was watching one hour photo before work last night and I told my girlfriend's mom that I always found it weird how robin williams did insomnia, death to smoochy and one hour photo at the same time.. all dark roles for him.. pretty odd point in his career. I don't like death to smoochy very much though, it seems pretty confused. I guess it's entertaininng in spots.

ALL YOU CINEMAGEDDONITES WHO DON'T HAVEO UT OF THE BLUJE, IT'S FREE LEECH WEEK, SO GET IT. Great quality version, the best actually! I watched it for the 6th time. It has that atmosphere I love. I forgot to list "Deer Hunter" amongst my favorite mvoies of all time the other day, especially of the quiet, lonely variety, heheh. 10/10 movie of course. Hopper was a great director. Easy Rider, the insane Last Movie (co edited by Jodorowsky), Colors, and so on are great.

great film, inspiring.

also rewatched

SCRAP HEAVEN - 8/10

DR EUGENE FELIKSON, since you like the kinda Japanese "Newest wave" stylings of stuff like Sharkskin Man, you'll like this film. Though you really need to check out survive style 5+ first (one of the best japanese film, all in all, of the past decade), I think you'll likely 10/10 that..

FRIED DRAGON FISH - 9/10

Hey, me., you like Shunji Iwai right? He's quickly becoming my favorite director, him and Yoshishige Yoshida at least are in the top... yeah, if anyone's curious, my favorite directors are (pretty much in order)... Takeshi Kitano, Jean-Luc Godard, Jon Jost, Michaelangelo Antonioni,, Shuji Terayama, Giuseppe Andrews, Fassbinder!, Andrzej Zulawski, Toshio Matsumoto, Brian DePalma, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Ki-Duk Kim, Seijun Suzuki, Atom Egoyan, John Cassavettes, Phillipe Garrelle, Abbas Kiarostami, Bela Tarr, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Wong-Kar Wai, Shinya Tsukamoto, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sidney Lumet, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Robert Altman, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Todd Solondz, Ingmar Bergman... whoo!

Savage Clone 12.26.2010 11:43 AM

Went and saw Black Swan last night. Not a pleasant experience.

I think I hate Ballet Movies.
I thought this was going to be something other than another fucking Ballet Movie.
Nope.

"Oh, the pressures of making it as a dancer! Oh, the domineering stage mom! Oh, the body dysmorphia!"

Fucking hated it.
Plus I am not even hot in the pants for Natalie Portman, which meant I could not even enjoy this on a salacious level.
Plus there were a lot of feet closeups. Ew.

Well, not really a movie, but I just watched the first season of Treme

Derek 12.26.2010 06:06 PM

Free leech at cinemageddon = me downloading a bunch of Jon Jost movies I hadn't already saw and loved.

Derek 12.26.2010 06:07 PM

Oh and All About Lily-Chou Chou is dope.

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 06:11 PM

good man Derek.

I'm glad those are being kept alive.

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 06:12 PM

He is the most underrated filmmaker of all time. His films are always SO visually arresting, SO masterfully directed... it's proof that if you are truly independent -- but you also want to succeed (as in, make some money) -- you aren't going to be very popular. But at least he has hardcore fans out there, I think.

Derek 12.26.2010 06:23 PM

They're alive but aren't very well seeded. 5kb/s download speed and shit.

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 06:31 PM

That sucks. I was really hoping people would keep them alive, since he's probably the best undiscovered filmmaker in the world today. I would've kept em alive myself but I don't have the space.

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 06:32 PM

Derek, dunno if you saw the episode with this on it, but this is probably the best things the simpsons has produced in a long time:

Derek 12.26.2010 06:33 PM

Hopefully they download before the freeleech is over but I don't know, utorrent slows my connection down so much that I can't browse the internet so I only have it running when I'm away from the computer.

And yeah I remember seeing that.

http://deadhomersociety.wordpress.com/
This is a cool blog. Entirely dedicated on hating new episodes of the Simpsons (which they dub "ZOMBIE SIMPSONS").

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 06:36 PM

that sounds like a problem you have with the settings of utorrent. not sure what exactly. it used to slow down this computer i'm using -- the 11 years old one with windows me and 11gb of space on it -- but i changed some shit a while back.. i think the refresh rate (when it checks for tracker updates) and how many people could be connected to me and it worked a lot better.

thanks for the blog link!

Derek 12.26.2010 06:59 PM

The new Simpsons episodes are weird. The jokes are either lowbrow, obvious or akin to something from Two and a Half Men. I don't connect with the characters at all anymore and characters are only used for a particular joke instead of exploring them like in previous episodes. Whenever I tell people that my favourite TV show is The Simpsons I always have to say, "oh, the first 10 or so seasons only". Strangely, if it ended I'd still be sad but for the last 12 years it's been my favourite show and I'll always love it for as long as I live.

It's cool anyway, I'm going to bed soon so I'll just leave utorrent open all night.

atsonicpark 12.26.2010 08:12 PM

I think many many episodes of the simpsons are still good. It's just good in a different way. Don't get me wrong, there have been some horrible shows, but I'm actually surprised by how clever and consistent a lot of the writing is. It just feels like.. every episode will have a few cool moments, whereas previously every moment of every episode was awesome. Even the older seasons had some lesser episodes -- it feels like the new ones are the lesser episodes of old seasons.

Subpar Simpsons still entertains me. But it's hardly must watch tv.

Alex's Trip 12.26.2010 08:29 PM

I'm super out of touch with movies these days, but I just saw Black Swan, and thought it was pleasant.

Usually if an old episode wasn't funny then it made up for it in it's tone or the sentimentality of the characters. The new episodes sure have some cool moments, but it's like hanging a piece of meat in front of a dog for eternity.

Alex's Trip 12.26.2010 08:37 PM

The last few opening sequences of the Simpsons I have seen have all been pretty excessively morbid. The banksy one, one where they all go to the electric chair, and I think one other.

Derek 12.26.2010 08:38 PM

A lot of the newer couch gags are dragged out and unfunny. But I like the long morbid ones.

Alex's Trip 12.26.2010 08:43 PM

I like the dark ones. It was pretty bold to put maggie in the chair, I was shocked (he he) and tickled. I can't say I recall any other long ones that don't end in them dying or something...
