Aki Kaurismäki: Likaiset kädet (Dirty Hands / Les Mains Sales)
Found a beat up VHS-copy from my local library. Certainly not the best Kaurismäki, but interesting anyway. ![]() |
^ Love that movie too.
You guys always keep me on my toes. ![]() night flowers - 8/10 .. depressing lil film with a cynical NATURAL ENEMIES/COMBAT SHOCK/Jostian attitude. Worth a look. Otherwise, mainly been watching graffiti docs. |

![]() great dialog, funny! "kind of like Faulkner, but east coast, and handicapped" |
I didn't like "Storytelling" as much as "Welcome to the Dollhouse" or "Happiness" but I really want to see "Life During Wartime". I was just wondering why that's not on DVD yet. Wonder what the hold up is.
|
Man, I'm a huge solondz fan, but LIFE DURING WARTIME was really lousy...
|
This weekend I saw INCEPTION and WAKING LIFE. I liked both and it was neat to see them in the same weekend as they share themes.

![]() I love me some Kim Novak and now have a desire for a meezer named Pyewacket |
![]() Got a lot more out of this than I had originally thought I would. I was mostly expecting just a refreshment on what I already knew, which a lot of it was... but there was a heap of info that was completely new to me. I really liked this. Quote:
I liked it a whole lot. Great ambient sounds, especially in the beginning. I'm actually going for a similar thing with my first feature. Interesting use of eerie faces. I'm really big on eerie faces. They're very effective. Like in Tourist Trap........eeeeehhhhh. Awesome visuals, and I really related with the director character. But no, it had gratuitous gore, nice nudie scenes, and was a lot like Last House on the Left in that respect. Last House on Dead End Street takes a more surreal, than slapstick approach that LOTL went for. But Last House on the Left had better writing, a more engaging plot, and David Hess's unforgettable soundtrack. I really like them both, and they're entirely different films, but I've watched LOTL a dozen times over, and Last House on Dead End street just once so far. UP NEXT... ![]() |
|
LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET is one of my biggest influences as far as soundtracks go .I'm sure you can sense a big influence with my film NO REASON TO EXIST. As far as hardcore slasher films, nothing beats MANIAC and NIGHTMARE IN A DAMAGED BRAIN.

![]() Gayniggers from outer space. A fucking classic! |
![]() Reservoir Dogs (7/10) It's not the revelation that it seemed when I first saw it. Some of the dialogue now comes over as really stilted and I'd forgotten just how reliant the whole thing is on Steve Buscemi, who pretty much steals every scene he's in (although Chris Penn is excellent, even if it took me until now to notice). It still has the same energy, though. It's probably a film that's best not thought about too much and enjoyed simply for what it is: a top grade heist movie. ![]() Death Proof (3/10) A little unfair to judge this (the two hour stand-alone version) outside of its intended double-bill setting but anyway. I just can't believe that Tarantino has managed to make a movie featuring Kurt Russell as a maniac TV stunt man and two car-loads full of sexy women (one of whom is wearing a cheerleader outfit), boring. It's fucking up what is (to my mind anyway) a totally unfuckupable concept. |

I think I should see it again. Quote:
One I've not seen. Definitely interested in hearing what you thought of it. |
Pretty cool. VERY colorful. I really liked that aspect. The sets were neat, and Bava did an excellent job setting the tone of the film. Its low-budget qualities work in its favor. It's definitely dated, and some of the acting is atrocious, but I'm assuming you won't mind that whatsoever. Also, this film was a huge influence on Ridley Scott's Alien... so there's always that too.
