Inception
7/10 It certainly didn't suck, but it's easily the most overrated movie of last year. I think everyone was just impressed with the special effects, which were pretty cool (nice MC Escher homage in there), but that's not enough to carry a film once it leaves the big screen. Also, the subplot with Leonardo di Caprio's wife was a bit depressing. Are we really so starved for quality Hollywood films these days that even the most slightly intelligent film gets hailed as a masterpiece? One last thing: I don't know about you guys, but my dreams are never that literal... |

Watched "The Mattei Affair" last night. Francesco Rosi is a great director that receives no cred. And at least one scene MUST HAVE influenced P.T. Anderson and "There Will Be Blood".

cheyenne autumn: 10/10 it's difficult to give it a ten because of the overlong wyatt earp/comedy part(which had it's moments at least) but it was really a moving and disturbing film experience |

As for the Inception talk, that movie might be overrated, though I still really enjoy it. What might have gotten it an excessive amount of praise is the otherwise lack of hard sci-fi films these days. Instead we usually get uh, green lantern and transformers. So it's nice when I get to say "huh, that's something to think about.' instead of 'huh, I wish that guy would stop making movies.' So in that regard it felt pretty fresh.  This movie was great. Super sad and felt like a bunch of little mini movies which was really neat. Giulietta Masina is absolutely intoxicating in it and she steals every scene (as she should, being the lead). But now I think I could watch everything she's been in. Fellini sure manages a really bleak atmosphere through means I can't even put together. I'm not sure if it was intended to be an anti-male picture, but almost every guy in this picture is an absolute puss. Moochers, faux macho bravado, chauvinists, and more of the same. The end is terrific, and not even a surprise, but works on some level that's really moving. Thank God there's no dialogue during it. Fantastic. |

Chika I'm assuming you watched "Mother of Tears" cause I think that's the only one from the trilogy with Asia in it. The other two are his most famous film "Suspiria" the first film, and "Inferno" the second film.

Yeah, La Strada has always interested me, but I've never gotten around to seeing it. The whole movie it didn't occur to me that she was in La Strada until the end when she's walking on the road with that black tear or whatever, for some reason it reminded me of the cover to La Strada, which I've seen a zillion times at the library.
I didn't know that about Shirley Maclaine and that movie. I'll definitely watch that. Love Shirley, especially in Some Came Running. |

Watched Ingmar Bergman's "The Touch".... his first English language film and a real wankfest of earlier themes about infidelity and doubt. von Sydow and Bibi Anderson are good though.
Also watched Michael Winterbottom's "Summer in Genoa". Love this guy and his work. I think I'll watch his latest called "The Trip" now. |
Haha I saw SOCIAL NETWORK on tv today and it was hilarious. Just a bunch of rich snob pricks saying smartass things to each other. Was this supposed to be a recreation of actual events? I remember the prereleaser hype promoting the accuracy of the movie, and if SO, wow... these people sure are clever non-fictional smartass billionaires with too much time on their hands! Either way, it was funny shit. I really like Fincher's style -- worked great for THE GAME, FIGHT CLUB, and SE7EN -- and seeing it applied to a movie about smartass "social networkers" was kinda surreal. And strangely entertaining. Even if I didn't like anyone in it or anything about it.
Hey, Henry, I'm a big WINTERBOTTOM fan. You should watch Butterfly Kiss if you haven't, one of my alltime favorites. I'll post some rartings for stuff in another post... |

 1992 cult anime movie that was banned when originally released for depiction of animal abuse. It was directed, written and animated by the one guy and it's just a really depressing arty fucked up anime that runs for about 50 minutes. Great melancholy keyboard music also.    |

The last couple of days ...
 Black Narcissus (9/10)  If you've not seen this before, please don't be put off by the less than inspiring poster. This is a masterpiece, creepier in its way than almost any horror film you're ever likely to see. And visually, there's not much in all of cinema that even comes close to it.   For a Few Dollars More (7/10) Probably my favourite Leone western (which I'm generally not a huge fan of). This gets the top spot though, largelly for Gian Maria Volonte's El Indio character, for me the most genuinely sinister western movie villain ever (although Jack Palance's character in Shane runs him pretty close). |
ok.. not that I'm asking for a handout, but whats the deal with CG? I've heard it mentioned on this site before, checked it out and heard it mentioned from several dealers I trade/buy dvd-r with. risks of virus and the like? how does it work with the ratio thing? how does one maintain a good ration if they don't have much to upload etc? color me curious as i'm a bit torrent virgin
