It was a very common practice in the 80s. As were many dreadful things, like wearing a white sport jacket over a salmon T-shirt with the sleeves of the jacket pushed up to your elbows; and wearing white leather high-tops.

Don't forget the sweater tied around your shoulders in combination with the polo shirt and khaki shorts or pants.
